The First Room

The Storage Vault, the small upper room of the Main Hut where the game starts, with a wall weapon outlined on the left wall, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Shi No Numa is the Storage Vault, the small upper room of the Main Hut, the two-story building in the middle of the swamp. Every game starts there. A soldier hangs dead from the thatched roof of the room, his left forearm missing. The players start with the weapon of their own loadout, since Vanguard Zombies lets each player bring a weapon and an Artifact into the game.

The room has two ways out: the staircase down to the lower floor of the Main Hut, and the passage to the Infirmary, the next room on the upper floor. Opening either of them gives access to the whole Main Hut and its courtyard. In a First Room game both stay closed.

G-43, Gunsmith render, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies

G-43

500 points, a semi-automatic rifle, on a wall of the Storage Vault.

SVT-40, Gunsmith render, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies

SVT-40

200 points, a semi-automatic rifle, the cheapest wall weapon of the map, on another wall of the vault.

From round 6, the wall weapons can climb a Pack-a-Punch tier at the start of a round, and the odds get better every five rounds until every wall weapon is at the third tier. The outline of an upgraded wall weapon turns from white to blue and its price goes up, to 4,000 points at the first tier. That is what keeps the two guns of the vault useful in the later rounds, as the Vanguard rounds page explains.

The staircase

One of the two exits of the room, down to the Mess Hall, the War Room, the Dormitory, the Excavation Room and the Flogger Courtyard.

Radio and ammo box

The vault holds one of the radios of the map and an ammo box, so the wall weapons can be refilled without leaving.

Rampage Inducer

Five lanterns hang outside the windows of the starting room. Shot in the right order, one bullet each, they make a runestone appear that switches the Rampage Inducer on or off for the rest of the game.

No Demonic Fountain

Fiendish Fortitude, the only fountain that never moves, stands on the balcony stairs above the Flogger Courtyard, and the four others are drawn among the outer huts.

No Mystery Box

Its first spot is either upstairs next to the vault or down the stairs, both behind the two exits. A spin costs 950 points.

No trap, no Crafting Table

The Flogger and the electric traps are outside, and the two Crafting Tables are in the Fishing Hut and at the Dig Site, so no armor can be made in the room.

Sacrificial Hearts

One is earned every three rounds, but the Altar of Covenants and the Tome of Rituals that spend them both stand outside the Main Hut.

The special rounds of Shi No Numa bring the Boom Schreiers, screaming zombies that run at the players and explode, even when they are shot first. On this map Zaballa usually starts to appear around round 15 and the Sturmkriegers after round 20. The Exfil Runegate opens at round 10, in the Dormitory downstairs.

The Shi No Numa leaderboard has a single category, from solo to four players. It is kept apart from the boards of the World at War, Black Ops and Black Ops III versions: the map shares a name and a layout with them, not the game. Its rules:

First Room only

Reach the highest round you can without leaving the first room. Every player stays in it.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full.

Boom Schreier rounds

Skipping the Boom Schreier rounds is not allowed.

No glitches

Glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded. A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public.

Overview

Shi No Numa (死の沼, „Swamp of Death“) is the third Zombies map of Call of Duty: Vanguard and the first round-based one, made by Treyarch for the Season Four update, Mercenaries of Fortune. It reimagines the map of World at War in the Dark Aether story, with new areas, a Pack-a-Punch and a new main quest; the original has its own book, Shi No Numa in World at War. The mission briefing: „The Swamp Of Death holds the key to defeating Von List and his undead Reich. Build the wonder weapon, find the Relic and expose the hidden horror of Kortifex’s past.“

The swamp is the dig site where Die Wahrheit, the SS unit of Wolfram Von List, first found the artifact of Saraxis. Professor Gabriel Krafft learns that a relic kept there was once used to cast Saraxis out of her human host, and the same could break the bond between Von List and Kortifex. Saraxis remembers nothing of it, and the Special Forces have to bring her memories back.

Before Season Four, Shi No Numa was only a place visited during Der Anfang, limited to its starting building, with the Flogger and the zipline out of use.

The Main Hut and the huts

The map is split into six areas: the Main Hut in the middle, the four huts around it, and the Dig Site, new to this version. Each of the four gates of the Main Hut names the hut it leads to, and the map of the War Room shows all of them. Opening the gate towards a hut and opening the hut itself are two separate purchases.

The map

The official map of the swamp, drawn as an old parchment: the Main Hut in the middle, the four huts at the corners, the Dig Site at the top and the Flogger beside the Main Hut.

Fishing Hut

To the southeast, past the Flogger. The largest hut: a Demonic Fountain, an electric trap, a Mystery Box spot and a Crafting Table. The Tome of Rituals stands on the way.

Storage Hut

To the northwest, by a dry path or a flooded one. The smallest hut: a Demonic Fountain, a Mystery Box spot, an electric trap and the workbench of the Wunderwaffe DG-2.

The Dig Site, a muddy ditch surrounded by crates and an elevated path, official promotional image, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies

Dig Site

To the north, opened from the Comm Room side or the Storage Hut side. A central ditch surrounded by a raised path, with the Pack-a-Punch Machine and a Crafting Table.

The Main Hut

The Storage Vault and the Infirmary upstairs; the Mess Hall, the War Room, the Dormitory and the Excavation Room downstairs; the Flogger Courtyard outside. The Infirmary sells the Mk 2 Grenade and holds a Mystery Box spot.

Comm Room

To the northeast, at the end of a narrow wooden path with the Altar of Covenants. A Demonic Fountain and a wall weapon just past the entrance, a Mystery Box spot, an electric trap and the telephone of the music Easter egg.

Doctor’s Quarters

To the southwest, through the labeled gate in the lower corner of the Main Hut and across the swamp, past the monolith of the main quest. The zipline generator is in front of the hut.

The Flogger

The rotating log trap of the Flogger Courtyard, run from a switch on either side of the gate for 750 points. Players can slide or crawl under it.

Electric traps

One at the entrance of each outer hut, 1,000 points. For about 30 seconds they shock anything that crosses the doorway, players included.

Zipline

Turned on from its generator in front of the Doctor’s Quarters, it comes down from the Main Hut and knocks over the zombies in its way. Riding it back up costs 500 points.

Perks

The Perk-a-Colas of Vanguard are Demonic Fountains. The first tier of each is free, then the tiers cost 2,500, 5,000 and 7,500 points. A player who goes down keeps the perk but loses one tier.

Fiendish Fortitude

More health, the Juggernog of Vanguard. Always on the balcony stairs above the Flogger Courtyard, reached from the upper floor of the Main Hut.

Venomous Vigor

Faster health regeneration, in one of the four outer huts.

Demonic Frenzy

Faster reloads, in one of the four outer huts.

Aethereal Haste

Faster movement, in one of the four outer huts.

Diabolical Damage

More critical damage, in one of the four outer huts.

The four fountains of the huts are drawn at random among the Comm Room, the Storage Hut, the Doctor’s Quarters and the Fishing Hut. A fifth, broken fountain stands empty in the Flogger Courtyard: it only fills during the main quest.

Weapons

Shi No Numa brought wall weapons back to Vanguard: ten guns, a mine and grenades, two of them in the Storage Vault. The Mystery Box costs 950 points, and from round 10 it can also give the Wunderwaffe DG-2.

Wunderwaffe DG-2

The wonder weapon of the map. Built at the workbench of the Storage Hut, or drawn from the Box after round 10. Each bolt kills up to ten zombies, and the Pack-a-Punch turns it into the Wunderwaffe DG-3.

Storage Vault

The G-43 for 500 and the SVT-40 for 200. In the First Room.

Main Hut

The Itra Burst and the Mk 2 Grenade in the Infirmary, the M1928 in the Mess Hall, the M1 Garand in the Dormitory and a mine in the Flogger Courtyard.

Outer huts and Dig Site

The MP40 in the Fishing Hut, the STG-44 in the Comm Room, the BAR in the Doctor’s Quarters, the Type 100 in the Storage Hut and the Combat Shotgun at the Dig Site.

Pack-a-Punch

At the Dig Site, on the raised path. The original Shi No Numa had none. It upgrades a weapon up to three tiers, and Season Four brought new camos to it.

The Tome of Rituals on its stand outside the Fishing Hut, with the prompt to sacrifice hearts for artifact upgrades, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Vanguard Zombies

Tome of Rituals

On the way to the Fishing Hut. A Sacrificial Heart buys an upgrade of the equipped Artifact.

Altar of Covenants

On the path to the Comm Room. A Sacrificial Heart buys a Covenant, a passive boost; three can be held at once. The stock changes every three rounds and grows from Rare to Epic and Legendary.

Crafting Tables

In the Fishing Hut and at the Dig Site. Salvage buys armor, at 500, 1,000 and 2,000 for the three levels in round-based modes, and lethal, tactical and support equipment.

Dormitory and Exfil

The room downstairs in the Main Hut where the Runegate opens, from round 10 and then every five rounds. The players kill a set number of enemies, then reach the portal to escape.

Enemies

Zombies

The undead soldiers of Die Wahrheit.

Boom Schreiers

The enemies of the special rounds. They scream, run at the players and explode, hurting the zombies around them too. Later in the game they also join normal rounds.

Sturmkriegers

Armored giants with a Death Machine, weak to headshots. On this map they appear after round 20, and while the barrel of the Wunderwaffe is defended.

Zaballa

A Dark Aether deity, Sister of Agony of Kortifex, usually from round 15. Only her three masks can be hurt, and she lays electric mines.

The Echo of Saraxis

The boss of the main quest.

Wunderwaffe DG-2

The wonder weapon of World at War comes back with a new quest. Its blueprint, signed by Ulrich Vogel, hangs over a workbench in the Storage Hut. It needs a weapon barrel and three vacuum tubes: the barrel is charged by lightning in the swamp, one tube by an electric trap of the Storage Hut, and the last one by the attacks of Zaballa on a Tesla coil of the Excavation Room.

Building the Wunderwaffe DG-2, step by step

Easter egg: Heads Up!

The main quest, Heads Up!, brings back the memories of Saraxis. The players free a monolith near the Doctor’s Quarters, solve its cipher, fill the broken fountain with zombie blood to see beyond, recover the two halves of the Relic Mirror and fight the Echo of Saraxis. It needs the Wunderwaffe DG-2.

The One

The telephone of the Comm Room plays an instrumental version of the song by Kevin Sherwood.

Samantha’s Sorrow

Four pans shot in the Fishing Hut start a hide-and-seek with a doll of Samantha Maxis, which ends with the song and a Max Ammo.

Mister Peeks

Three parts of the Mystery Box bunny, found in the zombie blood vision, give a pile of loot with 5,000 points and a Fire Sale.

Radios

Eighteen radios, from Krafft, from Die Wahrheit and from the Dark Aether entities.
