Learning a style

On Shaolin Shuffle, the actors learn kung fu from Pam Grier, the « Shaolin Sister » of the Black Cat Dojo. She can only be spoken to once the first Skating Diva scene is over. Then the four sake gourds of the dojo can be drunk, one per style, and the style can be changed at any time by drinking another.

The red gourd, to the left of Pam Grier.

Dragon gourd

The yellow gourd, behind the player, on the right, when facing her.

Snake gourd

The green gourd, behind the player, on the left.

Levels

A style has three levels, each reached after a set number of kills:

  1. Melee: a strike that kills in one hit in the early scenes.
  2. Shuriken: the second level adds throwing stars. Held for a moment, a shuriken glows in the color of the style and hits harder.
  3. Chi ability, then the ultimate: a power of its own for each style.

Chi abilities

The Tiger draws the zombies into a black hole, the Snake summons a skeleton that fights at the player’s side; the Crane and the Dragon strike several zombies at once without aiming.

A bar empties as the moves are used. Drinking a gourd refills it, and the gourds scattered around the map can each be drunk once per scene.

The four ultimates

Tiger

A ground pound that throws the nearby zombies into the air, even behind the player.

Crane

A long dash of flying kicks that kills everything in the way.

Dragon

A dragon spirit that stays where it is called and kills every zombie that touches it.

Snake

A flurry of fast hand strikes that kill everything they touch.

During the ultimates, the player takes no damage.

Chi doors

The styles also open the map: doors marked with the symbols of the four styles and wooden torii gates break under a Shaolin melee strike. Some act as teleporters between the rooftops, the Strip, the alleyway and the second subway, and one opens a ventilation shaft from the rooftops down to the alleyway.

In the First Room

The dojo is behind the doors of the station, so Pam Grier never teaches a style. The gourds stay useless, and a First Room game is played with weapons alone.
