The Trials of the Damned

The main quest of The Tomb sends Weaver, Grey, Carver and Maya after the Sentinel Artifact, the relic that Sir Archibald Fotherington-Smythe died trying to reach in 1908. The Obscurus Altilium, the amulet brought back from Citadelle des Morts, replays his memories along the way. The quest has a prerequisite and five steps: four trials around the statues of the Dark Aether Nexus, then a fight against the Artifact itself.

Before starting

Open the Dark Aether Nexus with the Obscurus Altilium in the Subterranean Temple, unlock the Pack-a-Punch, and build the Staff of Ice and upgrade it to Ull’s Arrow.

The four statues

Around the altar of the Nexus stand four pedestals, each with a small statue of a Vermin, a Parasite, a Doppelghast and an Amalgam. Each one sends the team to its twin, a larger statue elsewhere in the excavation.

Directed Mode

Added on February 20, 2025, it guides a team through the steps and caps the rounds at 15.

The statue trials

Every trial starts the same way: shoot the small statue in the Nexus with Sekhmet’s Vigor, the alternate fire of Ull’s Arrow, and interact with it. The portal closest to the trial then stays shut, so the team has to leave the Nexus by one of the three others. Each trial ends the same way too: a player takes the Dark Aether energy from the large statue and runs it back to its twin in the Nexus. Hit more than twice on the way, they lose it and must fetch it again.

  1. Vermin: the large statue is at the bottom of the Dig Site, in the First Room. Its lockdown floods the team with Vermin; kill them all and survive.
  2. Parasite: in the Shrine of the Hierophants. Each Parasite killed drops an energy orb, picked up by walking into it and banked at the statue until it is full.
  3. Doppelghast: in the Ossuary. The statue sets circles of spikes on the ground, which can down a player, while Doppelghasts swarm the team; survive until the last one dies.
  4. Amalgam: in Deep Excavation. An HVT Amalgam has to be killed. From time to time a shield tethered to several zombies covers it, and killing those zombies drops the shield.

Boss fight: the Sentinel Artifact

With the four statues charged, a bridge opens in the Nexus towards a smaller arena of several levels, where the Artifact waits on a pedestal. Interacting with it starts the last trial. It is immune to the Ray Gun and to the Staff of Ice, so every player needs a bullet weapon; the Gold Armor of the Dig Site and the Aether Shroud help a great deal.

  1. Phase 1: the Artifact spins in the middle of the arena and sweeps it with an orange beam that stuns and lightly damages, rising and falling between the two levels while the zombies come in. When its beam turns purple, it is vulnerable: shoot it until it bursts. A Max Ammo drops after every phase.
  2. Phases 2 to 4: the Artifact splits into several copies that spin faster each time. They can only be hurt while purple.
  3. Phases 5 to 8: an HVT carries the Artifact on its back, a Heavy Zombie, then a Doppelghast, a Shock Mimic and an Amalgam. Killed, it drops the Artifact, which turns purple and can be shot. From phase 6 a second HVT may carry a white decoy that cannot be hurt.
  4. Phase 9: a bell rings, and the Artifact flies to the back of the arena to charge an attack that wipes the team. Shoot it without pause until it breaks.

Ending and rewards

In the cutscene, the crew claim the Artifact and climb out of the caves, where Raptor One lands his Black Hawk. S.A.M. then points them to Liberty Falls and the mansion of the next map, Shattered Veil. A team that keeps playing is sent back to the Dig Site with every perk, surrounded by Legendary weapons, Aether Tools, Aetherium Crystals, Salvage and a wonder weapon.
