Making History

Making History is the main quest of The Darkest Shore. The crew has to open Straub’s storage room, recover the pommel of the Sword of Barbarossa and call in a British air raid that wipes the island out, then beat four Meistermeuchlers. It can be played solo or with up to four players. Before starting, the power must be on and the Ripsaw upgraded to fire blades.

The Corpse Gate

  1. Shoot the head off the corpse hanging above the stairs up to the Ubersprengen, in Bunker 3, with a Ripsaw blade.
  2. Place the head on the headless body chained to the Corpse Gate, in the U-Boat Pens.
  3. Kill zombies near the gate. Straub recognises the crew over the intercom and locks the pens down; fire bursts out of the floor tiles.
  4. Turn off the three gas valves, on either side of the gate and in the corner by the stairs. Each valve can only be turned when the fire under it dies down for a moment.
  5. Interact with the gate. The body is torn apart, the door opens onto the Freezer, and a Brenner comes out of it.

Red Riding Hood

The hanging corpse was the MFAA’s spy on the island. Brought back to life on the gate, he begs « Ich bin auf eurer Seite », « I am on your side », before the gate kills him a second time.

The hanging corpse

Straub had him hanged in chains outside Bunker 3.

The Stukas

Once the gate is open, Stuka dive bombers start flying over the island and attacking the players. Shoot them down with the flak guns of the cliff-top bunkers until the game confirms that the German fighter planes are down. From the flak gun of the Overlook, a large rock on the edge of the cliff can also be shot: it frees the first Son of Nerthus.

The chamber of Nerthus

  1. On the first minecart ride of a wave between Bunker 1 and the Beach, let a Bomber blow open the damaged wall halfway along the tunnel.
  2. Enter the hidden chamber and take the Monk’s head next to the round Ancient Door, then leave through the crack in the wall onto the beach.
  3. Place the head on the left-hand machine in the Freezer.
  4. Find the three Sons of Nerthus, small stone statues, and set them in the Ancient Door.

The first Son

It falls onto the beach once the rock on the cliff is shot from the flak gun of the Overlook.

The second Son

A charged spine of a normal zombie, given to the Monk, sends a friendly zombie running to the beach. It walks into the sea and comes back with the statue.

The third Son

It hides in one of several mossy rocks high on the cliffs of the Beach, the Bluffs, Bunker 3 and the Bunkers. Shoot them with the Ripsaw until it drops.

With the three statues in place, the door opens on three Meuchlers praying before the statue of Nerthus. Opening the last area of the map unlocks This Damn Island.

The three rituals

Each ritual starts with a charged spine of the right enemy, placed in the bucket by the Monk in the Freezer, which sends out a friendly creature. When the ritual is done, every player goes into the chamber of Nerthus, the door closes, and a glowing « anointed » enemy has to be killed for its head. The rituals can be done in any order.

The Meuchler

The friendly Meuchler runs off, the fog rolls in, and it curls up somewhere outside, screaming. Find it and shoot it before the zombies kill it, three times in a row. Meuchlers also come down into the chamber of Nerthus every few minutes, which makes it a good place to take their spine.

The Wüstling

Lead the friendly Wüstling to four Blitz machines in this order: Kugelblitz, Faustblitz, Laufenblitz, Lebenblitz. It follows the nearest player, and shooting it keeps it on the shooter. After Lebenblitz it jumps through a hole by the machine.

The Pest

Charge the friendly Pest five times with Ripsaw blades bounced off coloured coils around the U-Boat Pens and the Artillery Bunker. Some coils sit behind fuse boxes that must first be blown open with grenades.

The pommel

With the three heads, take the Monk’s head back from the Freezer and hang the four heads on the hooks of the chamber. The door closes, and the floor has to be filled with blood by killing zombies inside. Then the animal skull held by the statue bursts, revealing the Pommel of Barbarossa, and Black Winds to Darker Lands unlocks.

The pommel

A tactical that kills the zombies around it in two blasts and comes back by itself every ten to fifteen seconds.

The destroyers

  1. Use the right-hand machine in the Freezer to release a friendly Bomber, the Artillery Loader, and escort it to the Artillery Bunker. It cannot be hurt by the players, but the zombies can kill it.
  2. The Bomber leaves a battery by the coastal gun. Charge it by killing zombies nearby: each shot needs a few kills.
  3. Pick up the radio parts: one on the floor next to a corpse to the right of the Combat Shotgun in the Bunkers, the other in the hand of a dangling man above the doorway to Bunker 3, shot down with the Ripsaw.
  4. Use the radio on the table to the right of the Mystery Box, on the Overlook. German destroyers appear off the coast and fire on the island.
  5. Sink them with the coastal gun, aiming with the charts on the wall next to it: the left panel sets the elevation, the right panel the angle.

The boss fight

Throw the pommel at the radio of the Overlook, then all players interact with it together. Four Meistermeuchlers appear, each with a colour and a power: purple strengthens the zombies around it, green blinds, red stuns like Shellshock, yellow fires saw blades.
