The First Room

The Crash Site in the snow at sunset, with the burning wreckage and the tail of the crashed aircraft, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of The Frozen Dawn is the Crash Site, the snowy field outside the gates of Thule where the crew starts every game among the burning wreckage of its aircraft. The game opens on wave 0, with 500 Jolts and the starting loadout each player chose before the match. Beyond it, the map goes down into Thule, which the official blog describes as an underworld maze of frozen tunnels and candlelit chambers.

Machine Pistol

500 Jolts, in a weapon locker set into a large stone, facing away from the path that leads to the sacrifice stone.

M30 Luftwaffe Drilling

500 Jolts, a three-barrelled drilling, in a weapon locker to the right of Lebenblitz.

Those are the only two weapon lockers of the Crash Site. As everywhere in Nazi Zombies, a weapon bought from a locker can be refilled at the same locker.

The Lebenblitz machine on a burning engine of the wreck, Crash Site, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

The only Blitz

Lebenblitz, straight ahead of the spawn, on a burning engine of the wreck: 500 Jolts in solo, where it revives the player and can be bought three times, and 1,500 in co-op, where it speeds up revives.

The wall of stone columns that hides the door to Thule, with the sacrifice stone in the snow in front of it, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

The door to Thule

A wall of stone columns next to the sacrifice stone, which opens once the stone is fed. Behind it, an icy tunnel leads down to a second door, sold for 750 Jolts, that opens on the Ice Caves. On the leaderboard the stone is never fed, so the Crash Site has no exit.

The closed Thulian Transport of the Crash Site, a metal pod in the snow, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

The Thulian Transport

A large metal pod by the wreck of the aircraft, whose trip leads to the Passage. The guides note that a transport only opens once the area it leads to has been opened, so it stays shut in a doors-closed game.

The sacrifice stone

A round stone plate with emblems cut into it, in a seemingly dead-end corner on the left of the spawn. A player standing on it who kills five or six zombies feeds it their Geistkraft.

No Mystery Box

None of the Mystery Box locations of the map is in the Crash Site.

Enemies

Zombies first. Bombers join the waves from wave 8, according to the guides, and the other special enemies of the map can reach the Crash Site too.

The The Frozen Dawn leaderboard has two categories, each with separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players: No Consumables, the reference, and With Consumables. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest wave you can without opening any door or barrier.

Full rounds

Every wave must be played in full.

No human barrier

Players may not go down on purpose to block the zombies out of part of the map.

Consumables

Not allowed on the No Consumables board, the reference; allowed on the With Consumables board.

No glitches

Glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded and the lobby shown before the map is launched. On the No Consumables board, every player of a co-op game must record their own view.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Overview

The Frozen Dawn is the last Nazi Zombies map of Call of Duty: WWII, and the one that closes its story. It came with Shadow War, the fourth DLC pack of the game. The mission briefing: „Thule awakens, and the deathly throne once again casts a shadow over the kingdoms of men.“ The other maps of the game are in the WWII book of the Hub.

After Berlin, the crew learned where the Sword of Barbarossa came from and reforged its three pieces in Antarctica. On the way back, a giant bolt of Geistkraft rising from the ice struck their aircraft. The crew survived the crash and found, next to the wreck, the entrance to Thule, the buried city of the God-King, the ancient ruler whose influence had driven Barbarossa and, through the sword, Doctor Straub. The official blog announced the map with a line: „Descend. Defend. Destroy.“

Characters

The four playable characters are the crew of the earlier maps, the Raven team of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives Program.

M

Marie Fischer

The doctor born in Austria, sister of Klaus Fischer. In the notes of Vivian Harris, she calls the metal of the sword „magnetic monopolarised ore“.

D

Drostan Hynd

The Scottish doctor and professor of the crew.

O

Olivia Durant

The member of the French Resistance, who joined the program to give the art stolen by the Nazis back to the people.

J

Jefferson Potts

The American colonel of the team, which answers to Hank Rideau.

Vivian Harris in her winter gear, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

Vivian Harris

The agent of the Bureau of Archaic Technologies sent to rescue the crew. Her fourteen notes, hidden around Thule, follow her slow fall under the influence of the God-King, until she brings him the sword.

K

Klaus Fischer

The brother of Marie, dead since Mittelburg. Each of the four Raven weapons comes with a line of his, „I speak for…“, and in the last fight, reborn as the new Rook, he chooses the crew as the new Raven Lords.

Enemies

A Corpse Eater with its spiked back in the blue light of the ice, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

Corpse Eaters

Tall, pale zombies covered in spikes, new to this map. Instead of attacking the players first, they feed on other zombies, and every zombie they eat makes them stronger, until they glow red and become very hard to kill. The official blog called them „Void Sizzlers“ before the release.

Zombies

The undead of Thule, who make up every wave.

Pests, Bombers and Wüstlings

The special zombies of the earlier maps. The Bombers explode, and a Bomber is needed to blow open a piece of debris of the Crash Site in the main quest.

Treasure Zombies

They only appear once the four Raven weapons stand on their pedestals in the Ice Caves.

The God-King

The final boss, the ancient ruler of Thule, fought in his citadel at the end of the main quest.

Blitz

The Blitz are the perks of Nazi Zombies, given by an electric shock to the left hand. A player can hold four at once. The Frozen Dawn has all six machines of the game:

Lebenblitz

500 in solo, 1,500 in co-op, in the Crash Site. In the First Room.

Kugelblitz

2,000, in the Blood Altar. Bullets deal double damage and fire faster.

Laufenblitz

2,000, on the bridge of the Overlook. Faster sprint and endless stamina.

Faustblitz

2,000, in the Morgue. Melee attacks deal double damage.

Schildblitz

2,000, in the passage between the Phylactery and the Overlook. Reloading releases a burst of electricity.

Schnellblitz

3,000, in the Thulian Archives, left of the Orrery. Faster reloads.

Two Geistschild machines, which sell armor, stand in the Ice Caves and in the Morgue. A secret room, the Dark Room, gives all six Blitz at once.

The map

The Frozen Dawn is a maze on several levels, built around a ravine that looks out on a pyramid and a volcano hidden under the ice. Its areas, from the surface down:

The broken aircraft of the crew in the snow of the Crash Site, next to a Thulian Transport, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

Crash Site

The spawn, outside the city, where the aircraft of the crew lies broken in the snow. In the First Room.

The Orrery in the candlelit Thulian Archives, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

Thulian Archives

The largest area, around the Orrery, a giant model of the heavens. Below it lie the Gearworks that turn it, and the Passage, behind doors of 750 Jolts.

Ice Caves

The entrance hall of Thule, where four pedestals wait for the Raven weapons. Two doors of 1,250 Jolts lead on to the Thulian Archives and to the Morgue.

Overlook

A bridge over the ravine, facing the pyramid, between the Archives and the Phylactery.

Morgue

A narrow area of bones and coffins, from the Ice Caves down to the Phylactery.

Phylactery

A round room around the ancient forge, with doors of 1,250 Jolts to the Overlook and 1,000 Jolts to the Blood Altar.

Blood Altar

A deep cavern with the great pool of blood at its bottom.

Lost in Blood

The rooms reached through the Thulian Transports, where the Ubersprengen and the trials of the Raven weapons wait.

Weapons

Each player starts with the weapon of their loadout, chosen among pistols and some primary weapons, and the US Shovel. Sixteen weapon lockers stand around the map, two of them in the Crash Site:

The Mystery Box, whose spots include the Phylactery and the Blood Altar, holds most of the weapons of the game, the Fliegerfaust and the Jack-in-the-Box. The four wonder weapons of the map, the weapons of the Raven Lords, are not in the Box: each one is earned through a quest.

The Thulian Scythe standing upright in the dark, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

Fang of An’heist

The Thulian Scythe, weapon of the Deathraven Order, found in the Phylactery. Upgraded, it lets its holder cheat death once.

The Thulian Hammer standing on its head in a purple light, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

Fist of Tal’rek

The Thulian Hammer, weapon of the Stormraven Order, won on the Overlook. Upgraded, it can be thrown and comes back.

The Thulian Shield on a stone in the dark, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

Roar of Sang’ket

The Thulian Shield, weapon of the Bloodraven Order, carried by a Wüstling in the Blood Altar. It blocks attacks and slams the ground.

The Broken Flail floating in a green light, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

Talon of Lu’roth

The Broken Flail, weapon of the Moonraven Order, built at the Orrery. Its orb teleports the player where it lands.

Pack-a-Punch

The Pack-a-Punch of the map is the Ancient Ubersprengen, sunk in a room of blood that the Thulian Transports reach. A button in the Passage sends the transports there; each trip raises the machine a little, and after a trip through each of the three transports it can be used for 5,000 Jolts. The Crash Site transport is one of the three, so in the First Room the Ubersprengen is out of reach.

Easter egg: Kingfall

The main quest, Kingfall, asks the players to earn and upgrade the four Raven weapons, each through its own trial, then to lay them on the pedestals of the Ice Caves. A Thulian Transport then opens to the citadel of the God-King, where Vivian Harris wakes him with the sword. The fight has several phases, each answered by one of the Raven weapons.

The ending

Beaten, the God-King forces the crew to kneel, until Klaus Fischer, as the new Rook, gives them the power of the Raven Lords. Back in the arena, the players finish him off.

Side quests

The Raven Claw revolver on a stone slab, The Frozen Dawn, Call of Duty WWII Zombies

Raven Claw

A revolver won by shooting four ravens with a pistol, each one releasing a fully charged Corpse Eater. Upgraded, it becomes the Raven Eye.

The Classic or The Vintage

A shooting game with skulls in the coffins of the Morgue gives either the Classic PPSh-41 or the Vintage MG 42, one of the two per game.

The Dark Room

A hidden transport, opened with the three sacrifice stones charged, leads to a dark room where four nails give all six Blitz.

Funderbuss

A puzzle with coloured grenades around the forge gives a Double Jolts, then an upgraded Blunderbuss on the Overlook.

Every side quest of Thule

Achievements

The Frozen Dawn has ten achievements and trophies, worth 500 Gamerscore in all, from The Final Descent, for entering Thule, to Kingfall, for beating the God-King. Each of them asks for more than the Crash Site.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map mp_zombie_descent.
  • Thule sits in New Swabia, the Antarctic territory claimed by Nazi Germany before the war.
  • One of the challenges of the Deathbringer character, „Left forgotten“, asks the player to survive 15 waves without opening a door.
  • The heads of Peter Straub and of Frederick Barbarossa hang from the belt of the God-King, and their voices can be heard during the boss fight.
  • A rocket fired at the two front pillars of the pyramid comes flying back at the player, and a frag grenade thrown into a bright hole of the Archives ceiling brings a rain of grenades back down.
  • The upgraded weapons of the map wear a camouflage of pale stone with orange markings that fade in and out.
