The First Room

The small room of the Juggernog side starting room, with the chalk outline of the Gewehr 43 on the wall and a barricaded window, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

On ZFRR, Verrückt has two First Rooms. The ground floor of Wittenau Sanatorium is cut in two by an electric door that only opens once the power is on, and the power switch is in the Power Room, at the far end of the building, behind several doors. In a First Room game that door never opens: the Juggernog side, the German wing on the left, and the Quick Revive side, the American wing on the right, are two closed rooms with a wall between them. Every game starts with 500 points, a Colt M1911, the knife and two Stielhandgranates.

The side is not a choice. In solo and with two players the whole team starts in one room, drawn at random. With three players the game puts two in one room and the lone player in the other, on a random side; with four players it splits the team two and two. The official description of the map put it simply: «Players are split into pairs, in the challenge to find each other for survival.»

The Juggernog side. The German wing sells German weapons:

Kar98k

200 points, a bolt-action rifle, on a wall of the main room.

Gewehr 43

600 points, a semi-automatic rifle, in the small room where the Juggernog machine stands.

Stielhandgranates

250 points for four stick grenades.

The Juggernog Perk-a-Cola machine, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

The Juggernog machine

It stands next to a bookshelf in the small room of the Gewehr 43. Like every machine of the map it needs the power, so in a First Room game it stays in sight and can never be bought.

Four barriers

The Juggernog side has four windows for the zombies, against three on the other side. Besides the electric door it has a single way out, the door to the left balcony, for 1000 points.

The dentist chair

In the operating room of the Juggernog side. Using the wheel on its side plays a drill and the screams of a patient.

A dead Mystery Box spot

A pile of rubble with a teddy bear on it, next to Juggernog, marks one of the places the Box can go. The Box starts in the Power Room and only moves to areas that have been opened, so it never comes here doors closed.

The Quick Revive side. The American wing sells the American counterparts of the same two rifles:

The chalk outline of the M1 Garand on a wall of the Quick Revive side starting room, with its buy prompt for 600 points, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

M1 Garand

600 points, a semi-automatic rifle.

Springfield

200 points, a bolt-action rifle. It is the wall buy that Black Ops later replaced with a Kar98k.

A barricaded window of the Quick Revive side starting room, looking out on the courtyard and its fountain, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Three barriers

One window fewer than the Juggernog side, but two doors at 750 points each: one to a dead-end back room with the BAR, one to the right hallway and its stairs.

The Quick Revive Perk-a-Cola machine, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

The Quick Revive machine

It stands near the door to the right hallway, for 1500 points. It needs the power too, and in World at War it only speeds up reviving a teammate: in solo it does nothing at all.

The morgue corner of the Quick Revive side starting room, with its cabinets, a gurney and a barricaded window, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

The morgue corner

Cabinets and a gurney fill one end of the room. Crouching by the open cremation oven of the American side plays the cries of a baby, a woman or a man.

The words Power will reunite you chalked on a wall of the Juggernog side starting room, next to the electric door, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Power will reunite you

The words are chalked on the wall next to the electric door, a reminder that the two rooms only meet once the power is on.

The electric door

Bulletproof, with a window in it through which grenades can be thrown to the other side. Only the power switch opens it.

No perk at all

Both machines of the starting rooms need the power, and so do the other two. A World at War First Room on Verrückt is played without a single perk, in solo as in co-op.

No trap

The two pairs of Electro-Shock Defenses are on the balconies and also need the power.

Faster zombies

From Verrückt on, zombies can hit a player through a barrier before they climb in. They are faster than on the other maps, some of them sprint like a player, and without Juggernog two swipes are enough to go down.

Next to the remaster of Black Ops, the World at War rooms lack several things: Quick Revive cannot be bought without power in solo, Mule Kick does not exist yet, the Carpenter is not among the power-ups, and the Quick Revive side still sells the Springfield.

The Verrückt leaderboard keeps four boards for World at War, apart from the boards of the Black Ops and Black Ops III versions. ZFRR has no ruleset of its own for World at War: it follows the World at War rules written by the player Zi0 on his site B2, on top of the First Room itself:

Jugg side

Solo and 2P, the whole team in the room with the Juggernog machine.

QR side

Solo and 2P, the whole team in the room with the Quick Revive machine.

Full map

3P and 4P, the team split between the two rooms as the game deals it.

Double side

2P, one player in each room. Unofficial on ZFRR, and outside the player rating.

Doors closed

No door may be opened, every round is played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Platforms

Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PS3 are accepted. On PC only Plutonium is, with the verified community patch, and its anticheat output must stay visible; Steam and disc copies are not accepted.

Old School ranking

In solo and at two, the Jugg side and QR side boards count in the Old School ranking, with the other World at War First Rooms.

Overview

Verrückt, German for «insane», also called Zombie Verrückt or Asylum, is the second Zombies map of the saga and the only one of Call of Duty: World at War‘s Map Pack 1. It was built on the multiplayer map Asylum, itself drawn from the asylum of the campaign mission Ring of Steel. Its level description: «Electroshock therapy. Chemically engineered beverages. Hordes of Undead Nazis. Find the power to unite and send them back to their graves!» This page covers the original World at War version; the map came back remastered in Black Ops, see the Black Ops version of Verrückt.

The loading screen

A sketched plan of the asylum marks the two starts, the four Perk-a-Colas, the zappers and the power switch. On PC it carries the logos of Treyarch and Intel.

Verrückt brought most of what later maps take for granted: the Perk-a-Cola machines, the power switch, the electric traps, a Mystery Box that moves, and the teddy bear that sends it away. It is more than three times the size of Nacht der Untoten, with short hallways and narrow stairs everywhere, and the building is close to symmetrical: a German wing and an American wing that meet at the Power Room.

Characters

A Marine firing at zombies in a ruined room of the asylum, promotional screenshot, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

The Marines

Four US Marines sent to the asylum to extract the OSS operative Peter McCain. They are the playable characters of the World at War version, and the first Zombies characters to speak: in Nacht der Untoten they were silent.

T

Their fate

The strike team is «Tank» Dempsey, John «Banana», «Smokey» and Paxton «Gunner» Ridge. In the story, Smokey turns and kills John, Dempsey is captured by Group 935 and becomes one of Richtofen’s test subjects, and Paxton escapes. John and Smokey are named in emails hidden in the data servers of Black Ops.

S

Samantha Maxis

The announcer, whose voice calls the power-ups. Her laugh is heard when the teddy bear comes out of the Box.

Enemies

A zombie reaching for a Marine, seen through the eyes of a zombie in the first trailer, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Zombies

Undead German soldiers, the only enemy of the map: no Hellhound appears on Verrückt. They are the most aggressive of World at War: they hit through barriers, they «double hit» more often than on Nacht der Untoten, and even crawlers move quickly.

Sprinters

Some zombies run with their shoulders forward and their arms moving, at about the speed of a player. On World at War they are a feature of Verrückt; the Black Ops version dropped them.

Perks

Verrückt is the map where the Perk-a-Cola machines make their first appearance. World at War has four of them, and all four are here, one in each part of the asylum. All of them need the power, Quick Revive included.

Juggernog

2500 points, in the Juggernog side starting room. On the World at War versions of Verrückt and Shi No Numa it works differently: it raises the maximum health and heals 40 health every half second.

Quick Revive

1500 points, in the Quick Revive side starting room. It halves the time needed to revive a teammate and has no effect in solo.

Double Tap Root Beer

2000 points, on the left balcony, next to the MP40.

Speed Cola

3000 points, in the room between the right balcony and the kitchen.

The first four Perk-a-Colas, machine by machine

Weapons

The walls follow the two wings: German weapons on the Juggernog side, American weapons on the Quick Revive side, each with its counterpart across the building: the Kar98k and the Springfield, the Gewehr 43 and the M1 Garand, the MP40 and the Thompson, the STG-44 and the BAR. Past the starting rooms the walls sell the MP40, the Thompson, the STG-44, the BAR with its bipod, the M1897 Trench Gun, the Double-Barreled Shotgun and its sawed-off version, and Bouncing Betties.

The Ray Gun, third-person render, Verrückt, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Ray Gun

The wonder weapon of the map, from the Mystery Box only. The Box also holds the PPSh-41, the machine guns, the Panzerschreck and the M2 Flamethrower.

Every wall buy, its price and its room

The power and the traps

The power switch is in the Power Room, on the opposite side of the map from the starting rooms. From the Juggernog side the way is the left balcony, the left upstairs and the Power Room door; from the Quick Revive side it is the right hallway, the right balcony, the right upstairs, the kitchen and the Power Room. Turning it on opens the electric door between the starting rooms and wakes up the perk machines and the traps.

Electro-Shock Defenses

1000 points, two pairs on the balconies, usable once the power is on. Any zombie that walks through dies, without giving points, and a player who walks into it goes down unless they have Juggernog. After use the trap needs about 30 seconds before it can be used again.

Mystery Box

Verrückt is the first map where the Box moves. It costs 950 points and always starts in the Power Room. When it has been used enough, a teddy bear comes out instead of a weapon, Samantha laughs, the points are given back and the Box rises and vanishes. Every possible spot is marked by a pile of rubble with a teddy bear on top, and on World at War no beam of light shows where the Box is. It moves in a predictable pattern and never into an area that has not been opened.

Four power-ups can drop: Max Ammo, Insta-Kill, Double Points and Nuke. On World at War the dropped power-up flashes when it is about to disappear, and a voice announces it when it is picked up.

What changed in Black Ops

  • The Springfield wall buy of the Quick Revive side became a Kar98k.
  • Quick Revive can be bought in solo without the power, for 500 points, which gives the Quick Revive side a perk in a First Room game.
  • Mule Kick was added, at the end of the right hallway, by the stairs.
  • The Box gained the weapons of Black Ops, the Winter’s Howl and the Monkey Bomb, and the Carpenter joined the power-ups.
  • The Marines were replaced by the four Ultimis characters, using their lines from Der Riese, and the zombies by the models of Kino der Toten.
  • The sprinters were removed, and a radio playing campaign music was made interactive.

Black Ops III later brought the map back a second time in Zombies Chronicles, with its own weapons, GobbleGums and a new song.

Secrets

Verrückt has no main Easter egg quest in any version. The World at War version hides a song, the dentist chair and many details in the walls and the sounds of the asylum.

Lullaby for a Dead Man

Flush the leftmost toilet of the left upstairs three times: a cash register sound is heard and the song by Kevin Sherwood and Elena Siegman starts, very quietly.

Writing on the walls

«Wish too often and your wishing well will run» warns about the moving Box, and the numbers of the television series Lost are recited by a voice in the Power Room.

Screams and whispers

Scripted sounds hide behind doors, in the room of the Trench Gun, in the room of the Thompson and by the cremation oven.

The song, the chair and the hidden details

Achievements

Verrückt has no achievement or trophy on World at War. The Zombies achievements of the game’s map packs belong to Map Pack 2 and Map Pack 3 and can only be earned on Shi No Numa and Der Riese.

Trivia

  • On PC, Map Pack 1 came free with patch 1.4 on April 9, 2009, offered by Intel; the PC loading screen of the map shows an Intel logo.
  • The death song heard on the «Game Over» screen is The One, played in full as the Easter egg song of the next map, Shi No Numa.
  • In the first trailer the flag hanging outside shows a swastika; in the game it shows the Wehrmacht eagle. At 0:24 the number 115 appears at the top of the screen, which never shows in the game.
  • A machine gun could once be deployed in the little room of the BAR; the feature is still visible in the trailer.
  • If the door from the kitchen to the Speed Cola room is opened, zombies never spawn at the window behind the Speed Cola machine until the door to the right balcony is opened too. Only the World at War version does this.
  • The Quick Revive poster opposite the Double Tap machine has an icon with a heartbeat, changed in the later versions.
  • In the Polish version of the game the map was called «Sanitarium for the insane zombies».
  • Picking up a Ray Gun, a Marine can say: «This thing better pack a punch!»
