The First Room

The top floor of the main hut where the game starts, with the Warning gate at the back and the legs of a hanging corpse above, World at War on PC, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Shi No Numa in World at War is the top floor of the main hut, the thatched building on stilts in the middle of the swamp, where every game starts. The players start with 500 points, a Colt M1911, the knife and two Stielhandgranate grenades. The room is a wooden floor under the roof, with crates, barrels and shelves, and a corpse hanging from a beam above it.

Two ways lead out, each sold for 1000 points: the Warning gate, a wooden gate under a sign that reads «Warning», which opens onto the rest of the top floor, and the debris blocking the stairs down to the ground floor. In a First Room game neither is ever bought. The room has two wall weapons:

The Arisaka chalk outline on a wall of the starting room, sold for 200 points, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Arisaka

200 points, a Japanese bolt-action rifle. Shi No Numa is the only map where it can be bought off a wall: it takes the place the Kar98k holds on the other maps.

The Gewehr 43 chalk outline next to a window of the starting room, sold for 600 points, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Gewehr 43

600 points, a semi-automatic rifle, on the wall next to a window. The same weapon waits in the starting rooms of Verrückt and Der Riese.

Nothing else can be bought in the room: the M1A1 Carbine and the grenades are on the other side of the Warning gate, and every other weapon is downstairs or in the huts.

Four windows

The zombies of the Imperial Japanese Army climb in through four boarded windows. On this map they grab the boards and tear them off, where the zombies of Nacht der Untoten and Verrückt lunged at the window.

The hanging corpse

A body hangs from the roof, its left forearm missing. Knocked down with explosives and touched, it sends the players back to round 1.

Three radios

They stand around the room. Turning them on plays a message from Cornelius Pernell to Peter, framed by two sets of coordinates, those of Area 51 and Tunguska.

No perk

The four perk machines only appear in the huts, so the room has none, Quick Revive included.

No Mystery Box

Its spots in the main hut are downstairs, and the others are in the huts.

Hellhound rounds

Shi No Numa is the first map with them. Their rounds come every four or five rounds, they appear in a flash of lightning anywhere on the map and come into the room like the zombies. The round ends with a Max Ammo, dropped by the last dog or by the next zombie killed.

Two things make the World at War room different from the Black Ops one. In solo, a round of World at War never holds more than 24 zombies, whatever the round; Black Ops makes the total grow. And there is no Mule Kick: a Black Ops update of September 27, 2011 put its machine in the starting room, a perk the room never has in World at War.

The Shi No Numa leaderboard keeps the World at War runs on boards for solo, two, three and four players, apart from the Black Ops board of the same map. In solo and with two players, a run also scores in the Old School ranking, converted to the equivalent round on the Black Ops board. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening the Warning gate or the stairs.

Full rounds

Every round is played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Regular difficulty

The campaign difficulty must be set to Regular.

On PC

Only Plutonium is accepted, with a verified community patch in its latest version; the Steam and CD versions are not. The anticheat text in the upper corners must stay visible, with cg_drawIdentifier 1 for the whole game.

On console

Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series and PS3 are accepted.

No indicator

No zombie counter, no trap timer and no end-of-spawns indicator. The insta-kill round indicator allowed on Nacht der Untoten and Verrückt does not apply to Shi No Numa.

Settings

Field of view up to 120 and frame rate up to 250. Fast Ray, weapon duplication, removing fog or foliage and emulators are not allowed.

Overview

Shi No Numa, Japanese for «Swamp of Death», is the third Zombies map of Call of Duty: World at War, after Nacht der Untoten and Verrückt. It came with Map Pack 2, alongside the multiplayer maps Banzai, Corrosion and Sub Pens. It is the first map with named characters, the first with Hellhounds and the first with a Wonder Weapon of its own, the Wunderwaffe DG-2. Its mission briefing: «Maggot ridden corpses. Bug infested swamp. Hundreds of undead Imperial Army. Choose your tactic and defend for your lives!»

In the story, the Japanese army found fragments of an Element 115 meteor in the swamp and built the facility to study them; Group 935 later worked there too. Richtofen leads his three test subjects there to recover his diary. The map came back in Black Ops with the Rezurrection map pack and the special editions: see Shi No Numa on Black Ops.

Characters

Shi No Numa replaces the four unnamed Marines of the first two maps with four characters, one per nation of the game, drawn at random for each player at the start of a game. They remain the playable crew of most maps until Tag der Toten.

Enemies

Two burning Hellhounds running along the walkways of the swamp, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Hellhounds

Their first appearance in the series. A special round starts with fog and thunder; the dogs then come in groups, some of them on fire, and the burning ones explode when they die. A new dog round comes every four or five rounds.

Zombies

Soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army instead of the Nazi zombies of the first maps. The swamp slows the players but not them, so they outrun anyone in the water. Some walk in a martial-arts stance, and the crawlers move upright.

Huts, perks and traps

Around the main hut, four huts stand in the swamp: the Storage Hut, the Comm Room, the Doctor’s Quarters and the Fishing Hut. Each is reached through a gate of the main hut, for 1000 points, then its own door, for 750. There is no power switch: the traps work from the start, and opening a hut makes a perk machine spin through the perks and settle on one at random.

Juggernog

2500.

Quick Revive

1500, in solo as well. In World at War it does not revive a solo player.

Speed Cola

3000.

Double Tap Root Beer

2000.

The Flogger

A new trap, a spinning log covered in spikes, for 750 points, at the gate to the Fishing Hut. A player who goes prone passes under it.

Electro-Shock Defenses

1000 points, at the entrance of each hut, with no power needed.

The zipline

1500 points, from the Doctor’s Quarters back to the top floor of the main hut, once its control panel has been switched on.

Weapons

Every game starts with the Colt M1911 and two Stielhandgranate grenades. The walls sell ten weapons, grenades and the Bouncing Betty, two of them in the starting room: the Arisaka for 200 and the Gewehr 43 for 600. Each hut has one wall weapon: the Type 100 in the Storage Hut, the STG-44 in the Comm Room, the BAR in the Doctor’s Quarters and the MP40 in the Fishing Hut.

Wunderwaffe DG-2

The Wonder Weapon introduced by this map, from the Mystery Box only. Its bolt of lightning chains through up to ten zombies, but fired at a zombie too close, it shocks the player who holds it.

Ray Gun

From the Mystery Box, as on the earlier maps.

Every weapon, its price and its place

Mystery Box

950 points a spin. When it leaves, the Box no longer moves to the next spot in a cycle: it reappears on any of its spots, two in the main hut and one in each hut, and a beam of light in the sky shows where it stands. The loading screen says it: «Look for the light to find the box.» Besides the weapons of the walls, it holds the Ray Gun, the Wunderwaffe DG-2, the M2 Flamethrower, the Panzerschreck and the machine guns of the game.

What changed in Black Ops

The Box

The walls keep their World at War weapons, but the Mystery Box gives Black Ops weapons, with the Monkey Bomb.

Mule Kick

An update of September 27, 2011 put a Mule Kick machine in the starting room.

Solo rounds

The number of zombies of a round keeps growing in solo, where World at War stops at 24.

Carpenter

The power-up is added to the drops.

The swamp

It is harder to cross, with fog and foliage added or removed in places.

A fourth radio

Ultimis talks about being thrown into the future by the Wunderwaffe and a teleporter.

Secrets

The One

The song by Kevin Sherwood and Elena Siegman, the one of the Map Pack 2 trailer. It plays after the telephone of the Comm Room is used several times, and it unlocks the hidden achievement Dead Air.

The radios

Three in the starting room, with the message to Peter; one near the entrance of the Doctor’s Quarters, with laughter and a whisper of «Element 115»; one in the Storage Hut, which plays the audio of the Verrückt trailer.

The meteor

A red fragment of Element 115, crackling with electricity, can be seen outside the map from the path to the Storage Hut. Shooting it makes the character speak.

Die Glocke

Downstairs in the main hut, by a hole in a burning wall, a paper reads «Die Glocke» and «Der Riese».

Achievements

Map Pack 2 brought ten achievements and trophies, on Xbox 360 and PS3 only, all earned on Shi No Numa: 250 Gamerscore in all, with three Silver trophies. The hidden one, Dead Air, is the song of the Comm Room.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map «Sumpf», German for «swamp».
  • The game files hold eight unused perk machine models named after the map, with a version for the power on, as if Shi No Numa was first meant to have a power switch.
  • In World at War, opening a hut door in the middle of a round spawns a few extra zombies, even past the limit of the round. Black Ops removed it.
  • On PS3, thunder and wolves can be heard before a Hellhound round, unlike on PC and Xbox 360.
  • Tapping the bookshelf of the Doctor’s Quarters plays Richtofen’s laughter.
  • In the Fishing Hut, children can sometimes be heard singing a nursery rhyme.
  • The deathsong of the map is a part of «Beauty of Annihilation», heard in full on the next map, Der Riese.
  • A typewriter on the multiplayer map Hangar reads «Shi No Numa».
