The First Room

Verrückt is the only Black Ops map with two First Rooms. The ground floor of the asylum is cut in two by an electric door that only opens once the power is on, and the power switch sits in the Power Room, at the far end of the building, behind several doors. In a First Room game that door never opens: the Juggernog side, the German wing on the left, and the Quick Revive side, the American wing on the right, are two closed rooms with nothing in common but the wall between them.

Every game starts with an M1911, the knife and two Stielhandgranates. With the doors closed, these are the wall buys of the two rooms:

The chalk outline of the Kar98k wall buy, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Kar98k

200 points, on both sides. On the Quick Revive side it replaces the Springfield of the World at War version.

The chalk outline of the Gewehr 43 wall buy, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Gewehr 43

600 points, Juggernog side, in the small room with the Juggernog machine.

The chalk outline of the M1 Garand wall buy, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

M1 Garand

600 points, Quick Revive side.

Stielhandgranates

250 points for four, Juggernog side only.

Each side has one perk machine, and the power switch decides what they are worth:

The Quick Revive machine lit in the Quick Revive side starting room, its perk icon in the HUD in Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Quick Revive

In the Quick Revive side room, near the door to the right hallway. In solo, Black Ops sells it for 500 points without power, which makes it the only perk of any Verrückt First Room. With two players it costs 1500 and needs the power, so it stays out of use.

Juggernog

In the Juggernog side room, next to a bookshelf. It needs the power, so in a First Room game it stays in sight and can never be bought.

Zombies crossing the Juggernog side starting room, its bookshelves, window and Gewehr 43 chalk outline in Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Juggernog side

Four windows. Apart from the electric door, a single way out: up to the left balcony, for 1000 points. The dentist chair of the operating room is here, and a Mystery Box spot next to Juggernog.

Zombies behind the planks of a window of the Quick Revive side starting room, a rifle chalk outline on the wall in Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Quick Revive side

Three windows and two doors at 750 points each, one to a dead-end back room with the BAR, one to the right hallway and its stairs.

The electric door

Bulletproof, but grenades go through a window in it, and a downed player on the other side can be revived through it. “Power will reunite you” is chalked on it.

Neither room has a trap: the two Electro-Shock Defenses are on the balconies and need the power. The Mystery Box starts in the Power Room, so it is not part of a First Room game either.

Which room you get is not a choice. In solo and with two players, everyone starts on the same side, drawn at random, and players restart until the game gives them the side they want. With three or four players the game splits the team between the two rooms.

The Verrückt leaderboard keeps five boards, and B2, whose rules ZFRR follows, writes a rule for each official side:

Jugg side

Solo and 2P. The players must play on the side with the Juggernog machine.

QR side

Solo and 2P. The players must play on the side with the Quick Revive machine.

Full map

3P and 4P, the team split over both rooms as the game deals it.

Double side

2P, one player in each room. B2’s tip: load the game with three players and let the third one leave before round 1 begins. Unofficial on ZFRR.

Reversed

3P, two players on the Quick Revive side and the third alone on the Juggernog side. Unofficial on ZFRR; the game can also count on the regular board.

Doors closed

No door or barrier may be opened, out-of-bounds glitches are forbidden, and on PC a run is played on Steam, BGamer or Plutonium under B2’s conditions.

Overview

The Verrückt art of the Rezurrection map pack, a soldier with a pistol in a corridor of the asylum, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Verrückt, German for “insane”, also called Asylum, is the second Zombies map of the saga. It first came out for Call of Duty: World at War in 2009. Call of Duty: Black Ops brought it back, remastered, with the Hardened and Prestige editions and later in the Rezurrection map pack. This page covers that Black Ops version. Its official description: “Electroshock therapy. Chemically engineered beverages. Hordes of Undead Nazis. Find the power to unite and send them back to their graves!”

Verrückt introduced most of what later maps take for granted: the Perk-a-Cola machines, the power switch, the electric traps and the teddy bear that sends the Mystery Box away. The building is close to symmetrical, a German wing and an American wing that meet at the Power Room, with short corridors and narrow stairs everywhere.

Next to the World at War original, the Black Ops version adds Black Ops weapons, the Winter’s Howl and the Monkey Bomb to the Box, swaps the Springfield wall buy for a Kar98k, adds Mule Kick and the Carpenter power-up, uses the zombie models of Kino der Toten, puts the four Ultimis characters in place of the Marines, and adds an interactive radio.

Characters

In the Black Ops version the players are the four Ultimis characters, using the lines they recorded for Der Riese. In World at War, Dempsey came with three Marines instead.

T

“Tank” Dempsey

The US Marine, voiced by Steve Blum.

N

Nikolai Belinski

The Soviet soldier, voiced by Fred Tatasciore.

T

Takeo Masaki

The soldier of the Empire of Japan, voiced by Tom Kane.

E

Edward Richtofen

The Group 935 scientist, voiced by Nolan North.

Samantha Maxis is the announcer of the power-ups.

Enemies

Zombies

Undead German soldiers. The Black Ops version uses the models of Kino der Toten instead of the originals. Since Verrückt, zombies can hit players through a barrier before they climb in.

Crawlers

Zombies that lose their legs keep coming on the ground.

No Hellhounds

Dogs were planned for Verrückt and cut. Zombies are the only enemy of the map.

The World at War version is known for its sprinters, a few zombies faster than a running player. The Black Ops version removed them.

Perks

The first four Perk-a-Colas of the saga all started on Verrückt, one in each part of the asylum. All of them need the power, except Quick Revive in solo.

Weapons

The walls follow the two wings: German weapons on the Juggernog side, American weapons on the Quick Revive side, each with its counterpart across the building. Past the starting rooms:

The power and the electric door

The power switch panel of the Power Room in Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Everything on Verrückt turns on one switch. The Power Switch is in the Power Room, on the opposite side of the map from the starting rooms, across from the first spot of the Mystery Box. Pulling it opens the electric door between the two starting rooms, turns on the perk machines and makes the traps usable.

Electro-Shock Defenses

Two traps, one on each balcony, 1000 points a use once the power is on. They throw arcs of electricity across a passage and kill the zombies that walk through, without giving points. A player who crosses an active trap without Juggernog goes down.

The reunion

In a game of three or four, the open door joins the two halves of the team. The map’s own description sends the players to “find the power to unite”.

The asylum, room by room

Each wing climbs from its starting room to an upper floor, and both lead to the Power Room. The prices below are the ones the sources agree on.

Mystery Box

950 points a spin. It always starts in the Power Room, and a teddy bear sends it to another of its five spots, each marked by a half-buried box and a pile of dirt:

Power Room

Across from the switch. The first spot of every game.

Juggernog side starting room

Next to Juggernog, on its right.

Left balcony

By the door towards the Power Room.

Left upstairs

Next to the wall barrier.

Right hallway

Right in front of the door from the starting room.

Verrückt is where the teddy bear first appeared: Samantha laughs, the box floats up and vanishes. The power-ups of the map are Max Ammo, Insta-Kill, Double Points, Nuke and, in the Black Ops version, Carpenter.

Easter egg

The leftmost toilet of the bathroom upstairs on the German side, the Lullaby for a Dead Man Easter egg in Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Verrückt has no main quest. Its Easter egg is a song: flush the leftmost toilet of the bathroom upstairs on the German side three times and Lullaby for a Dead Man, by Kevin Sherwood and Elena Siegman, starts playing. The game plays it as a sound effect rather than as music, so it is quiet.

Secrets

The dentist chair

In the Juggernog side starting room. Use the wheel on its side and a drill starts, with a patient screaming.

The radio

Added by the Black Ops version, on a desk seen from a window of the American balcony. Shoot it and it plays music from the campaign.

The numbers

In the Power Room, a radio voice reads “4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42”, the numbers of the series Lost.

The crying oven

On the American side, crouch by the open cremation oven to hear a baby, a woman or a man crying.

The song and every secret of the asylum

Achievements

None. Verrückt has no achievement of its own in Black Ops: the Zombies achievements of the game are written for Kino der Toten, “Five”, Ascension, Call of the Dead, Shangri-La and Moon, and the four Rezurrection achievements are all for Moon.

Trivia

  • The game files of the Black Ops version call the map zombie_cod5_asylum.
  • A poster at the end of the American balcony reads “Unbeaufsichtigte Kinder werden umgehend an den Zirkus verkauft”: “Unattended children will be immediately sold to the circus.”
  • Above the stairs of the Power Room, a writing warns: “Wish too often, and your wishing well will run”, a nod to the teddy bear of the Box.
  • The blood on the walls of the kitchen reads “19382406 9:21”: June 24, 1938, the day a meteor exploded over Chicora, Pennsylvania, and the Bible verse Jeremiah 9:21.
  • A mounted MG42 hides under the fountain, out of reach: an automatic turret cut before release, which came back in Kino der Toten.
  • The Zombie Labs art of the Rezurrection pack shows a zombie with a Skorpion, a weapon that is not in the map.
  • On Xbox 360, the friends menu of Black Ops spells the map “Verrukt”.
  • The game over song is “The One”, heard in full as the Easter egg song of Shi No Numa.
