The First Room

The village courtyard at the start of a game, with the stone stairs and the blue metal gate marked with a red star that stays shut, Firebase Z, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Firebase Z is the village where every game begins: the Courtyard, a cobbled square between old colonial houses, and the Atrium, the house on its side where Captain Sergei Ravenov waits. Like on every map of Black Ops Cold War each player starts with a weapon of their own loadout, so the run does not depend on a wall weapon.

The village has only one door to buy: an iron gate in a corner of the Courtyard, sold for 1250 points. It opens onto the Equipment Storage and the stairs that climb to the teleporter towards Outpost 25. The blue metal gates around the square, marked with a red star, stay locked until the power of the firebase is restored, which is impossible doors closed.

An ornate iron gate, “Locked Door, Unlock door, 1250”. In a First Room game it is never bought.

The Atrium

The house where Ravenov sits behind a window. The Pack-a-Punch Machine stands inside, but it only answers “You must turn on the Power first!”.

A Mystery Box spot

In a recess of the Courtyard, right beside that gate. Each spin costs 950 points, and the Box can move away once Mister Peeks, the bunny of Cold War, comes out of it.

Magnum

750 points, a revolver on a wall of the Courtyard, the only wall weapon of the square.

One perk machine

Quick Revive, in the alley along the Courtyard, near one of the entrances to the Equipment Storage. Like every perk of Cold War it costs 2500 points as a first perk, and more for each perk already owned. It is the only machine doors closed.

Crafting Table

In the Courtyard: it builds equipment, armor and support with the salvage dropped by the zombies.

Pack-a-Punch and Der Wunderfizz

Both in the village, the Wunderfizz in the Village Mess Hall to the left of the Pack-a-Punch, and both waiting for the three Aether Reactors. Closed doors, neither ever works.

Enemies

Zombies, then Armored Zombies from round 10, Manglers from round 9 in solo and round 6 in co-op, Heavy Zombies, Mimics and, later in the game, Hellhounds. Record footage shows all of them inside the village. The Orda, the giant of the map, comes with the Assault Waves of Outpost 25.

The Firebase Z leaderboard keeps two categories, each with boards for solo and for two, three and four players. No Support is the reference; With Support, where the scorestreaks are allowed, counts in the player ratings only. How a round of Cold War compares with a round of the older games is explained in Black Ops Cold War: Rounds. The rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening doors, and play every round in full.

No Support

The support items, the scorestreaks such as the Sentry Turret, the Chopper Gunner or the War Machine, are not allowed. On the With Support board, every one of them may be used.

Outbreak

Loading into Outbreak first to get the extended interaction range is allowed.

No glitch

Glitches and exploits are not allowed, and neither is duplicating a wonder weapon.

Video

The whole game must be recorded, with every player’s point of view in co-op on the No Support board. The health, the points and the round counter are never covered, and the game audio must be heard.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted. A run whose video is removed or made private leaves the board.

Overview

Firebase Z is the second Zombies map of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and the second chapter of the Dark Aether story, after Die Maschine. It came out for free on February 4, 2021, during Season One. The mission briefing: “A captured agent in the heart of darkness. A treacherous scientist on the brink of a breakthrough. An unlikely ally out for revenge. Infiltrate Omega’s Vietnam base and expose the secrets within.”

Outpost 25 is an Omega Group research base built on the site of Firebase Ripcord, the base of the campaign mission Fracture Jaw. The map has two halves: the village that houses the scientists, and the firebase itself, where Omega mines the Dark Aether through a rift. A teleporter links them. Requiem comes to find Samantha Maxis, held in the Dark Aether, with the help of Ravenov, an Omega officer who works with them.

Characters

The players are the Operators of the Requiem strike team, chosen in the loadout. Around them, the story of the map is carried by four characters.

Samantha Maxis

Held in the Dark Aether since Peck threw her into it. Freeing her is the goal of the main quest, and she walks out of the rift in the final cutscene.

Sergei Ravenov

The Omega captain who helps Requiem from the Atrium. He starts the main quest and drives Samantha away at the end.

W

William Peck

The lead scientist of Omega Group, a former member of the US Department of Defense who defected to the East. He is locked in a room at Outpost 25, where the players drug him with his own truth serum.

G

Grigori Weaver

The Requiem officer who speaks to the team on the radio.

Enemies

Armored Zombies

New on this map: Omega soldiers in helmets and vests, with less armor than Heavy Zombies. They come from round 10.

Manglers

Back from Gorod Krovi, with an arm cannon. Shooting the cannon while it charges cancels the shot, and destroying it removes much of their health.

A Mimic opening its glowing mouth among zombies, Firebase Z, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies

Mimics

Creatures that pass for an item on the ground and grab the player with their tentacles. Their mouth is their weak spot.

The Orda towering over the Requiem team at dusk, Firebase Z trailer, Firebase Z, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies

Orda

A giant of the Dark Aether that falls from a portal during the third Assault Wave of a reactor, and the final boss of the main quest. It fires swarms of burning flies and mortars that turn into Hellhounds.

Heavy Zombies come back from Die Maschine, and the Hellhounds, now always on fire, explode when they reach the player and leave a pool of flames. They appear in the later rounds and when the truth serum of the main quest is made.

Perks

Each perk of Black Ops Cold War costs from 2500 to 7000 points, more for each perk already bought. In the village, only Quick Revive works without the power.

Quick Revive

In the alley of the starting village.

Juggernog

In the Military Command Control Room, next to the staircase. It works once the Military Command reactor is on.

Speed Cola

On the top floor of the Data Center, near the exit to Rocky Defense.

Stamin-Up

In the Mission Control room.

Der Wunderfizz

In the Village Mess Hall. It also sells Deadshot Daiquiri and Elemental Pop, and later Mule Kick, Death Perception and PhD Slider.

Weapons

Seventeen weapons hang on the walls, from the Magnum of the Courtyard for 750 points to the Bullfrog and the Stoner 63 for 3250. The Mystery Box adds the rest of the Cold War arsenal and the wonder weapon of the map.

RAI K-84

The wonder weapon, built by Dr. Dimitri Kuhlklay from an AK-74. It fires purple energy bolts, and its GP-6K2 launcher fires an orb that slows the zombies, then explodes when shot. From the Box, the Trials or a hidden quest. Pack-a-Punched, it becomes the Discordian Disruptor.

Aether Reactors and Pack-a-Punch

There is no power switch: three Aether Reactors, in Mission Control, the Data Center and Military Command, each power their own part of the base. One costs 500 points to start; its collectors then gather the essence of the zombies killed nearby, and the reactor explodes in a blast that kills the undead around it. With the three on, the Pack-a-Punch and the Wunderfizz of the village open.

Aether Reactor

A tank of purple Aetherium crystals. It also has to be defended during the Assault Waves, when the zombies pour in to damage it.

Teleporter

On the hill of the village, past the 1250 door. It sends the players to the Helipad of the firebase.

Jump Pads

500 points a jump, near the reactors, to fly between the defense sites.

Easter egg: Maxis Potential

The main quest frees Samantha Maxis from the Dark Aether. It needs the three reactors and the RAI K-84. Its steps:

  1. Talk to Ravenov, then to Peck, and take Ravenov’s ID Badge.
  2. Gather three compounds, mix a truth serum in the Field Hospital and spray it into Peck’s room.
  3. Trap three Mimics with Essence Traps and bring them to the Memory Transference Station for a floppy disk.
  4. Open the OPC with the disk, take the Aethermeter and dig up three Aether crystals.
  5. Realign the satellite dish, enter the rift, and defeat the Orda in the village.

Secrets

Lost

Three cassette tapes play a song sung by Julie Nathanson, the voice of Samantha.

The bunny of the Atrium

A stuffed bunny on a balcony of the Atrium leads to a dark forest and a crate with a free Juggernog.

The Colonel’s safe

A zombie head brought back to life gives the code of Kravchenko’s safe and a free perk.

The dance pads

A dance on each of the six Jump Pads makes them free for the rest of the game.

Challenges

Firebase Z has no achievement or trophy of its own. Its rewards are calling cards: those of the Firebase Z Report, such as Requiem Reinforcements for taking back the three reactors, and Maxis Potential, a Dark Ops challenge given for the main quest.
