Blood of the Dead: Hell’s Retriever

Feeding Cerberus

The Hell’s Retriever of Mob of the Dead comes back on Blood of the Dead, and it is again earned by feeding three Cerberus heads. Each one is a flaming dog head on a wall, which eats the zombies killed near it, one at a time, six for each head. When a head has eaten enough, it howls and goes back into the wall.

Eagle Plaza

On the wall of the white house right in front of the door from the Warden’s Office.

New Industries

On the back left wall of the building, near a Mystery Box spot and the GKS.

Cell Block 2nd Floor

In the middle of the cells, at the same place as in Mob of the Dead.

The underground ride

With the three heads fed and the power on, take the fast travel between the Warden’s House and the Showers, in either direction. Halfway through the tunnel, the Hell’s Retriever sits on a rock above the lava: hold the use button as it passes to take it.

How it works

Throwing

It pierces up to six zombies before it comes back to the hand. Holding the button charges it for more damage and range.

Power-ups

Thrown at the ground under a power-up, it brings it back to the player.

Quests

It is needed for the Blundergat skulls, the Spoon, the Golden Spork, the Attuned Spectral Shield and the main Easter egg.

Bleeding out

A player who bleeds out loses it and has to ride the tunnel again.

Hell’s Redeemer

The Redeemer glows blue and kills a zombie or a Hellhound in one throw as long as it is charged at least once. Each player upgrades their own:

In the Recreation Yard, near the burning barrel, kill zombies with the Retriever. In the right spot it glows blue when thrown. After enough kills, a howl is heard and the glow stops.
With the vision of the Spectral Shield, find the blue mark of a hellhound outside the playable area, in the Recreation Yard, the Citadel or Eagle Plaza. Throw the Retriever at it: the mark disappears and the Retriever is taken.
On a Hellhound round, follow the paw prints of a ghost dog, visible with the shield, and hit it with a Spirit Blast.
Ride the fast travel between the Warden’s House and the Showers again: the Hell’s Redeemer waits on the rock.

Achievement

Senseless Axe of Violence

Kill 5 zombies with the Hell’s Redeemer before it starts its return.

In the First Room

None of the three heads and neither end of the fast travel is in the laboratory or Model Industries, so the Hell’s Retriever is out of reach of a doors-closed game.
