The First Room

View from the North Atrium Bridge over the Main Hall and the Atlas statue at the start of a game, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Dead of the Night is the upper floor of the Main Hall, where every game starts: the North Atrium Bridge and the two galleries at its ends, the East Gallery and the West Gallery. The players spawn at both ends of the bridge, split by a red barrier that only the Sentinel Artifact removes. Like Verrückt, a team is therefore cut in two, and each half plays its own side of the room. Each player starts with the weapons of the loadout: a starting weapon picked among the Welling revolver, the Strife, the RK 7 Garrison, the Saug 9mm, the Essex Model 07 and the MOG 12, the knife, a lethal grenade and a specialist weapon.

Each side has one door for 750 points: in the East Gallery it leads to the East Balcony and the Music Room, on the west side it stands in the Tea Room next to the gallery and leads to the West Balcony and the Smoking Room. When one of the two is bought, the other one opens too. Behind both, the way goes on to the Grand Staircase, where the Sentinel Artifact floats in full view of the spawn.

Strife

500 points, a semi-automatic pistol, on the wall of the East Gallery.

Essex Model 07

500 points, a lever-action rifle, on the West Gallery side. It is the rifle Brigadier General Warwick shows off to the guests in the intro.

Those are the only two wall buys of the First Room, one on each side. The zombies climb into the galleries over their railings.

The bridge barrier

A wall of red light marked with the sigil of the Sentinel Artifact, in the middle of the North Atrium Bridge. It only falls when the Artifact is activated on the Grand Staircase, so in a First Room game the two halves of a team never meet.

The staircase from the East Gallery down to the Main Hall, closed by a red Sentinel barrier, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

The staircases

The stairs from each gallery down to the Main Hall are closed by the same red barriers.

The Essex Model 07, the Tea Room with its 750-point door towards the West Balcony, and the red barrier of its own staircase.

No perk, no Mystery Box

The Danu altar stands in the Entrance Hall, behind the Sentinel Artifact, and the nearest Mystery Box spot is on the Grand Staircase. The Pack-a-Punch is at the far end of the Forest.

Quest details

A candle on a table across from the Strife and the painting of a scared girl on the wall of the East Gallery are used by the Savage Impaler quest and the Pack-a-Punch challenges, and the fireplaces of both galleries by the Knight quest of the Easter egg.

The Dead of the Night leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. Its reference category is Purist, played on custom mutations; seven other categories, from No Elixirs to Realistic All Elixirs, are played on the standard difficulties without mutations. The Purist rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door or barrier.

Custom mutations

The game starts at round 5, with doors and power doors closed, a tight zombie spread, every zombie at sprint speed, all special zombies disabled and one bar of health less.

Classic Elixirs only

The green Classic Elixirs are allowed, talismans are not.

Grenades and specialists

Every kind of grenade and every specialist weapon may be used.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game is recorded and the mutations are always shown; in co-op every loadout is shown in the lobby before the game, which is also recommended in solo. A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Black Ops 4 rules

No bots, no weapon duplication, no going down on purpose for ammo or a specialist charge, and the health, points and round counter are never covered.

Overview

Dead of the Night is the fifth Zombies map of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and the first map of the Black Ops Pass. Chronologically, it is the first chapter of the Chaos story. The mission briefing: “When a party at an English mansion turns into an undead bloodbath, a phony psychic, stage-show cowboy, retired general and bedeviled butler must fight for their lives.”

The archaeologist Alistair Rhodes throws a party at his country estate. While the guests celebrate, members of The Order hold him prisoner in the Wine Cellar and take the Danu Sentinel Artifact out of a bag; his butler Godfrey is under their control. Godfrey draws a ritual circle on the balcony above the Main Hall, and when the Artifact turns the guests into zombies, the four people standing inside it are spared. The intro ends with a wolf howling at the moon.

The Danu Artifact

Activated by The Order in the Wine Cellar, in front of the captive Alistair Rhodes. Its trial is the Easter egg of the map.

Rhodes Manor at night, seen from the Greenhouse Terrace, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Rhodes Manor

A mansion with a glass-roofed Main Hall, gardens, a greenhouse laboratory, a cemetery with its mausoleum and a forest of oaks on old druid ruins.

From the Main Hall the map opens in three directions. To the east, the bedrooms, the Dining Room, the Gardens and the Greenhouse Laboratory; to the west, the Billiards Room, the Library and Study, the Cemetery and the Mausoleum; to the north, past the Forest Terrace, the Forest and its Pack-a-Punch. Fast travel portals at the end of each wing lead back to the Main Hall.

Characters

The four playable characters are a cast of their own, played by well-known actors.

Gideon Jones in his cowboy hat, official portrait, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Gideon Jones

An American cowboy of a stage show, voiced by Kiefer Sutherland. He carries a Welling revolver.

Christina Fowler, known as Madame Mirela, official portrait, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Christina Fowler

A phony psychic and con artist known on stage as Madame Mirela, voiced by Helena Bonham Carter. She hides an Escargot in her purse.

Brigadier General Jonathan Warwick in his red uniform, official portrait, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Jonathan Warwick

A retired Brigadier General of the British Army, veteran of the Anglo-Zulu and Boer wars, voiced by Brian Blessed. His rifle is the Essex Model 07.

Godfrey the butler, official portrait, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Godfrey

The butler of Alistair Rhodes and an unwitting member of The Order, voiced by Charles Dance. He hears the voice of a “Dark Godfrey”.

A

Alistair Rhodes

The owner of the manor, kidnapped by The Order. His voice is heard on the phonograph cylinders hidden around the map.

S

Scarlett Rhodes

His daughter, who appears in the ending and sets off after her father.

Enemies

A Nosferatu crouching in the mansion, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Nosferatu

Small, fast vampires that make the player bleed, which stops health regeneration for a while. They are weaker than a zombie, and one strike of the Stake Knife always kills them.

A Crimson Nosferatu, red-skinned with glowing eyes, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Crimson Nosferatu

A stronger red variant that can latch onto a player and bite. It appears from round 35, or earlier when one is woken up for the Alistair’s Annihilator quest. Insta-Kill does not affect it.

A Werewolf with glowing red eyes raising its claws, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Werewolves

The heavy enemy of the map. One always comes when the Forest is opened, and they spawn on their own from round 15 once the Forest is open. Silver Bullets are their weakness.

Zombies

The guests of the party, turned by the Danu Artifact.

Catalysts

Zombies that burst into an elemental form, fire, water, poison or lightning, from around round 8.

Shadow Werewolf

The boss of the Easter egg, a pale werewolf that turns invisible.

In the Purist mutations of the ZFRR board, the special enemies are disabled: a First Room game on that board is played against sprinting zombies only.

Perks

Like every Black Ops 4 map, Dead of the Night has four Perk Altars, Danu, Ra, Zeus and Odin, and the perk each one holds is chosen in the player’s loadout. The Danu altar always stands in the Entrance Hall, behind the Sentinel Artifact; the three others are spread at random among the other altar spots, which include the Forest Terrace, the Wine Cellar, the Gardens and the Mausoleum. None of them is in the First Room.

Weapons

The walls of the manor sell nineteen weapons and the Bowie Knife. In the First Room there are only the Strife and the Essex Model 07, at 500 points each. The other walls, from the cheapest to the most expensive:

Balconies

The RK 7 Garrison for 700 on the West Balcony and the Saug 9mm for 750 on the East Balcony.

Inside the mansion

The MOG 12 for 1000 on the Grand Staircase, the Escargot for 1000 in the bedrooms, the Spitfire for 1150 in the Study, the SwordFish for 1200 in the Dining Room, the Mozu for 1300 in the Main Hall, the MX9 for 1300 in the Wine Cellar and the M1897 Trebuchet for 1400 in the Library.

Grounds

The Maddox RFB for 1400 on the Greenhouse Terrace, the KN-57 for 1450 on the Cemetery Path, the ICR-7 for 1550 in the Greenhouse Laboratory, the Vapr-XKG for 1550 in the Gardens and the Auger DMR for 1550 at the Mausoleum.

Forest

The GKS for 1300 and the Bowie Knife for 3000 on the Forest Terrace, the Titan for 3750 and the Koshka for 4500 in the Forest.

The Mystery Box costs 950 points and moves between six spots: the Grand Staircase, the Library, the Dining Room, the Gardens, the Cemetery and the Forest.

Every weapon, its price and its place

Sentinel Artifact and Pack-a-Punch

The Sentinel Artifact on the Grand Staircase replaces the power: activating it lowers every red barrier of the map and opens the Entrance Hall. The Pack-a-Punch, at the end of the Forest, asks for more. Three challenge stones hidden in vases must be found, fed with zombie souls and gazed into; each one sets a challenge, against vampires, inside a clock circle or with a ghost, that gives a Tuning Fork. The three forks open the Forest, where a first Werewolf waits.

The Artifact, the three challenges and the Forest

Silver Bullets and buildables

Three crafting benches are used in every game. The Silver Melter in the Wine Cellar melts a candle holder, a trophy and a plate; the Silver Bullet Dispenser in the Library turns the silver and three gunpowder ingredients into Silver Bullets, which double the damage of a weapon and tear through Werewolves. The Ballistic Shield is built in the Smoking Room, and three Fire Cores power the fire traps of the doorways.

Silver Bullet Dispenser

The bench at the foot of the stairs to the Study. The first weapon is loaded for free, the next ones cost points.

Wonder weapon: Alistair’s Folly

Alistair's Folly, the revolver-like wonder weapon, in its case, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Alistair’s Folly

A revolver that fires small green explosive rounds, twelve in the chamber. It comes from the Mystery Box for 950 points, or for free from a safe in the Library opened with a code of four coloured symbols. Two quests upgrade it into the Chaos Theory, then into Alistair’s Annihilator, with charged shots of acid, whirlwind, shrinking portal and fireball.

The free Folly and its two upgrades

Wonder weapon: Savage Impaler

Savage Impaler crossbow, render, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Savage Impaler

An automatic crossbow, 24 bolts in the magazine, that kills zombies with a headshot. It lies in a hidden Crypt under the Cemetery, opened by a quest of candles, a ghost and four jewels; after that it joins the Mystery Box.

The candles, the ghost and the Crypt

Wonder weapon: Stake Knife

Stake Knife, the wooden stake melee weapon, render, Dead of the Night, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Stake Knife

A wooden stake that replaces the knife. It always kills a Nosferatu or a Crimson Nosferatu in one strike. It is crafted in the Cemetery after a quest of elemental symbols carved in the trees of the Forest.

The symbols, the branch and the stake

Easter egg: Trial by Ordeal

The main quest asks the players to “defeat the evil within”. After the Pack-a-Punch, the three challenge stones show a knight, a telescope and an effigy, each the start of a quest line that ends with a stone slab and a fight against zombies, vampires and Werewolves. With the three slabs, a door in the Forest leads to the Ruins and the Shadow Werewolf. The reward is the achievement Trial by Ordeal and the ending cinematic.

Secrets

The pool table

In the Billiards Room, shooting the balls in order from 1 to 9 into the pockets gives 500 points. Doing it with every ball sent to the side away from the fireplace moves a bookcase, behind which waits an SG12, a Sword Flay elixir or a random power-up.

The wine barrels

Six barrels drip wine at different speeds in the Wine Cellar. Knifing their taps from the fastest to the slowest moves a wine cabinet, behind which lie Silver Bullets or 500 points. A wrong barrel ends the attempt for the game.

Phonographs

Six phonograph cylinders and a phonograph are hidden in the manor. On them Alistair Rhodes tells the story of the estate: a house burned by a mob in the 1600s, three knights lost in 1487, a druid figurine of a werewolf.

Achievements

The map has ten achievements: Trial by Ordeal, for the main quest, and nine smaller ones, from getting bitten by a Crimson Nosferatu to shrinking fifteen zombies with one shot of Alistair’s Annihilator.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zm_mansion.
  • The design of the Main Hall is based on the Main Hall of the Natural History Museum in London.
  • A newspaper on Voyage of Despair tells the events of Dead of the Night, but it is dated March 10, 1912, while the map takes place on March 20, 1912.
  • Godfrey mentions stables at Rhodes Manor, though they cannot be seen on the map.
  • The Nosferatu take their name from the 1922 silent film Nosferatu, an adaptation of Dracula.
  • Warwick sometimes calls the Werewolf the “Hound of the Wankervilles”, after The Hound of the Baskervilles.
  • The Savage Impaler looks like the NX ShadowClaw of Black Ops III, with steampunk additions and a different finish.
