Descent:
Oz

Round 5: the arena

At the start of round 5, Oz announces that he has taken control of the teleporters and pulls every player into his arena, a room that no door leads to. An-G, the computer of the facility, takes the teleporters back a moment later and sends the players to where they stood. The visit gives an early look at the arena, which has its own 3D Printer, Upgrade Station, Contact Grenade wall, Decontamination Zone and four power generators.

The arena

A large room with four control rooms behind glass around it, an electromagnetic grid overhead and gas vents in the floor.

First battle: the control rooms

At the start of round 13, Oz counts down from ten over the intercom, skipping from six to four, and pulls the players back into the arena. He stays out of reach, behind armored glass in one of the four control rooms, and throws everything at them:

• his “friends”: zombies, Chargers, EMZs, Exploders, Spikers, Blinkers and Fused Zombies, and sometimes Hosts;
• Remote Turrets taken from the Atlas carrier, from eight spawn points;
• the electromagnetic grid above the arena, which shocks any player who jumps into it;
• Manticore gas, which cuts the arena into thirds.

After a while An-G lowers the barrier of the control room. If the players deal enough damage in time, the room explodes and Oz moves to the next one; if not, the barrier closes and he runs more tests before An-G opens it again. All four control rooms must be destroyed. Care packages fall during the fight with Full Reloads, and the zombies give no points. The victory earns Smooth Operator.

Second battle: the mutated Oz

At the start of round 20 the countdown comes back in a much rougher voice. This time Oz fights in person, mutated into a mix of a Goliath Exo Zombie and a Host, behind a shield that stops all damage.

1. Turn on the four power generators of the arena, which power its Decontamination Zone.
2. Lure Oz into the zone and use it. He staggers and his shield drops; the zone powers off after each use.
3. Damage him while he is open. He can lose at most a quarter of his health each time, then shields again, teleports away and sends zombies in.
4. Repeat. At half health he turns the gas vents back on, and at a quarter the electromagnetic grid.

His death shuts the vents and the grid and earns How the mighty have fallen! Upgraded to Mk 2 to Mk 5, the Blunderbuss can take him down in about four shots.

The ending

Put to rest

The first death of the mutated Oz unlocks the end cinematic. Lennox, Kahn and Decker stand around his body.

Burned

Lennox steps up with a lighter, but Lilith stops him, picks up a flamethrower and burns the body herself: “Atlas will pay for what they did to you, Oz.”

Oz then tells what became of each of them: Lennox promoted to lieutenant colonel, Decker admitted into Sentinel, Kahn suing Atlas, and Lilith emptying its bank accounts. Under the facility, thousands of pods hold clones of Oz.

In the First Room

Oz’s arena is reached by teleport, not through a door, so a First Room game goes there like any other: at round 5 for the short visit, at round 13 for the control rooms and at round 20 for the mutated Oz. The only weapons and upgrades it has for them are those of the Landing and of the arena itself.
