The First Room

The sand of the Arena seen from the mouth of the starting tunnel, with the temples and the stands full of spectators behind, IX, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of IX is the Arena, the sand floor of a gladiator amphitheater surrounded by stands full of spectators. The game starts in a stone tunnel under the stands, and the players walk out of it into the Arena through a raised portcullis. They start with 500 points and the weapon of their class, the Welling revolver by default.

The Arena opens on two temples, each behind a door on its edge: the Danu Tower and the Ra Tower. The Danu door costs 750 points. The Zeus and Odin towers are only reached from inside the map. In a First Room game, both doors stay closed.

The tunnel

The spawn of every game, a dark passage that ends at a portcullis on the Arena. It belongs to the First Room.

Essex Model 07

500 points, a lever-action tactical rifle. Its chalk outline is drawn on the side of a stone pedestal, at the foot of the stairs of a platform near the Danu door.

Those are the only two wall buys of the Arena.

No perk

The four perk altars, one per god, stand in the altar rooms at the top of the four towers. A First Room player has no perk at all, unless the seventh challenge of a banner gives one.

No Mystery Box

None of the spots of the Box is in the Arena.

No Pack-a-Punch

It rises in the Temple, under the map, after a quest through the four towers. The third challenge of a banner gives a Pack-a-Punched Strife, the only upgraded weapon of a First Room game.

The banners

Four challenge banners hang around the Arena, one per god, and the challenge podium stands in the middle, with a bowl for each god where the rewards appear. The nine challenges of a banner give a self-revive, points, the Pack-a-Punched Strife, Max Ammos, a Full Power, a weapon, an extra perk and a Pack-a-Punched Hades.

The fire

Jets of fire burst from the grates of the floor, in patterns that change every round. They burn the players and lower the mood of the crowd.

The crowd

The spectators judge the players. Killing fast earns a power-up thrown into the Arena every round; taking hits earns dung that costs 250 points, then objects thrown at the players.

The special enemies

Gladiators, Catalysts and Zombie Tigers come into the Arena as the rounds go on, and Blightfathers from round 15.

The game itself rewards a First Room run of IX: the achievement My Home is the Arena asks for round 20 without opening a gate. The IX leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. Its reference category is Purist, played on Hardcore; seven other categories, No Elixirs, Classic Elixirs and All Elixirs on Normal, then Classic and All Elixirs on Hardcore and on Realistic, have their own boards. The Purist rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door or barrier.

Hardcore

The game is played on Hardcore difficulty, and custom mutations are not allowed.

Fixed loadout

Elixirs and talismans are not used. The elixir slots hold a set loadout: Aftertaste, Point Drops, Anti Entrapment, Newtonian Negation, Quacknarok and Arsenal Accelerator among the Classics, Conflagration Liquidation, Licensed Contractor, Who’s Keeping Score, Extra Credit and Dividend Yield among the Megas.

Weapons

The starting weapon is the Welling or one of the two wall buys, the Strife or the Essex Model 07. Only Frag Grenades and Acid Bombs are allowed, and no special weapon.

Full rounds

Every round is played in full; glitches, exploits, duplicated weapons and going down on purpose are not allowed. Split-screen is allowed, bots are not.

Video

The whole game is recorded, and the pregame lobby shows every player’s loadout. The health, the points, the round counter and the chat stay visible. A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Overview

IX, pronounced “Nine”, is the second Zombies map of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and a map of the Chaos story. The mission briefing: “Transported across the Millennia, Scarlett, Diego, Bruno and Shaw find themselves caught up in a sinister ritual, where they are thrust into brutal gladiatorial combat against waves of unnatural enemies that stand between them and the High Priest of Chaos…”

In the intro, the four friends sit in an abandoned temple of Delphi, in Greece, and breathe the vapors of a bowl while the voice of an oracle warns them that “the knowledge you seek was not intended for mortal man”. They wake up in another age, dressed as gladiators and locked in a cage. In the Arena, the High Priest of Chaos raises the Ra Sentinel Artifact before a cheering crowd; its power turns the prisoners into zombies, which tear the gladiators apart. The four are let into the Arena, fight their way out of the first wave, and face a Blightfather that bursts out of a prisoner’s chest.

The map is small: the Arena in the middle, the four towers of Danu, Ra, Zeus and Odin around it, each with the altar of its god at the top, and underground tunnels that lead to the Temple, the round chamber that holds the Pack-a-Punch.

Characters

The four playable characters are the Chaos crew, friends of the missing archaeologist Alistair Rhodes.

Enemies

Zombies

The prisoners of the arena, turned by the power of the Ra Sentinel Artifact.

Catalysts

From around round 8, a zombie can tear itself open to free a Catalyst: Fire, which explodes; Water, which makes the zombies around it tougher; Poison, which hurts the players near it; and Lightning, whose scream blinds and deafens.

A Destroyer in armor and horned helmet, an axe in each hand, in the Arena, IX, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Destroyers

The Gladiators of the game, armored and armed with two axes, which they also throw. With the helmet shot off, they rush the players. Destroyers and Marauders appear from around round 8.

A Marauder leaping at Bruno Delacroix across the sand of the Arena, IX, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Marauders

The Brawlers of the game, lighter than the Destroyers but faster and fiercer: they leap at the players and slash with their claws.

A Zombie Tiger with red eyes pouncing on Diego Necalli, IX, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Zombie Tigers

They come at random among the zombies, and in whole packs on their own rounds.

A Blightfather opening its jaws, promotional render, IX, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Blightfathers

From round 15, a Blightfather can burst out of a zombie. Its tongue pulls a player in, its vomit chases them, and it can cover a buyable with vomit that costs 500 points to clean.

Fury and Wrath, two zombified war elephants, are only met at the end of the main quest.

Perks

In Black Ops 4, the players choose their four perks in their class before the game. On IX, each perk goes to the altar of one god, Danu, Ra, Zeus or Odin, in the altar room at the top of its tower. Two secrets go beyond the four: the seventh challenge of a banner, and the Viking of the Odin Altar Room, who gives a perk when his belongings are returned to him.

Weapons

The walls sell nineteen weapons, two of them in the Arena. The Mystery Box holds the wonder weapons of the map: the Death of Orion, a living scorpion that fires lightning, and the Homunculus, a small creature that clubs zombies to death. The shield is the Brazen Bull, with a katar and a bull that fires flaming bolts, and the Acid Trap is built at the entrances of the towers.

Challenges and the crowd

Four banners hang in the Arena, one for each god. A knife on the rope starts nine challenges in a row, each one with a fixed reward on the podium. Above them, the crowd keeps watch: it rewards a fast, clean game with power-ups and punishes a bad one with dung.

Pack-a-Punch

The Pack-a-Punch Altar rises in the Temple only once the four champions have been beaten: a gong in each altar room calls them, and their heads go on the stakes in front of the altar. An upgrade costs 5000 points and a repack 2500.

The four gongs and the Pack-a-Punch

Easter egg

The main quest, Venerated Warrior, takes the crew through the four towers and under the map, from a fertilizer made of bone, charcoal and dung to an electric trial in the Arena, and ends with a fight against Fury and Wrath.

Secrets

Four coins play Mad Hatter, by Avenged Sevenfold. A Viking in the Odin Altar Room gives a free perk, a hidden challenge makes the players safe from the fire, and eight scrolls tell the story of two earlier prisoners of the arena.

Achievements

IX has nine achievements, one silver and eight bronze. My Home is the Arena is the First Room achievement of the map: round 20 without opening a gate.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zm_towers.
  • Avenged Sevenfold made a music video of Mad Hatter for the map, with the Chaos crew fighting in the Arena.
  • The Brazen Bull takes its name from an ancient torture device, a hollow bronze bull.
  • A Homunculus thrown towards the stands makes the crowd cheer and start a wave.
  • Completing the main quest opens the doors of the other maps for free for the rest of the session, except on Alpha Omega and Tag der Toten.
