The First Room

The starting room under the spiral staircase, with the Help door on the left and the words You Must Ascend From Darkness on the wall, Zombies Chronicles promotional image, Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Nacht der Untoten on Black Ops III is the starting room, the large ground-floor room of the bunker where the four players spawn. Every game starts with 500 points, the 1911, the knife and frag grenades; a player who has completed A Better Tomorrow, the Easter egg of Revelations, starts with the RK5 instead of the 1911.

Two ways lead out of the room, and both stay shut in a First Room game: the Help door, to the right of the spawn, which opens onto the Help room and the Mystery Box, and the sofa barricade on the stairs, which leads upstairs. Both were sold for 1000 points in the earlier versions of the map. The zombies get in through five boarded windows, and each board put back is worth 10 points, up to a cap per round.

RK5 burst pistol, Gunsmith render, Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

RK5

500 points, a three-round burst pistol, on a wall of the starting room. The first Samantha doll of the Easter egg lies on the floor in front of it.

Sheiva semi-automatic rifle, Gunsmith render, Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Sheiva

500 points, a semi-automatic rifle, on a wall of the starting room. Its ammunition costs 250 points.

Those two wall buys take the place of the Kar98k, at 200 points, and the M1 Carbine, at 600, of the World at War and Black Ops versions. Every other wall weapon, the Mystery Box and the sniper cabinet are behind a door.

The perk of the room

Mule Kick, 4000 points, in the starting room, near the GobbleGum machine. It gives a third weapon slot, and it is the only perk of the map that is not drawn from Der Wunderfizz.

A GobbleGum machine

One of the two machines of the map stands in the starting room; the other is upstairs. Whether a gum may be used depends on the board.

No Mystery Box

The Box sits in the Help room and never moves, so it is out of reach doors closed.

No Pack-a-Punch

The map has no Pack-a-Punch Machine. The only upgraded weapons come from two Mega GobbleGums: Wall Power, which Pack-a-Punches the next wall weapon bought, and Crate Power, which does the same for the next weapon taken from the Box.

Zombies only

No Hellhounds and no special enemy of any kind come into the room: the rounds only change in the number and the speed of the zombies.

The Nacht der Untoten (Black Ops III) leaderboard is kept apart from the Black Ops one. It has three categories, each with its own boards for solo and for two, three and four players: No GobbleGums, the reference, then Classic GobbleGums and Mega GobbleGums. The rules of the No GobbleGums board:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door, the Help door and the stairs included.

No GobbleGums

Neither Classic nor Mega GobbleGums are allowed.

Crawl Space

The rules of the board allow Crawl Space in co-op games, for sleeper purposes.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded. Each player shows their gum loadout before, during or after the game, and in co-op a player who does not show the lobby needs their own point of view.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

The Classic GobbleGums board allows Classic gums only. The Mega GobbleGums board requires at least one Mega gum and bans Flavor Hexed, Self Medication, Near Death Experience, Power Vacuum and Round Robbin.

Overview

Nacht der Untoten, German for “Night of the Undead”, is the first map of Zombies, born as a hidden bonus of World at War in 2008 and remastered on Black Ops in 2010. Its Black Ops III version is one of the eight maps of Zombies Chronicles, rebuilt in the engine of the game with its weapons, its GobbleGums and Der Wunderfizz. The Black Ops version has its own book: Nacht der Untoten.

The bunker is the same three rooms: the starting room, the Help room with the Mystery Box, and an upper floor split in two. On the timeline published with Zombies Chronicles, an Allied plane has crashed on the airfield and struck German trucks carrying the undead and Element 115 between Group 935 facilities; the surviving Marines hold out as long as they can. Nacht der Untoten is the first map of the Aether story.

In this version the four Ultimis characters take the place of the unnamed Marines, as they did on Black Ops. On a radio of the map, Doctor Monty remarks that they “weren’t even there, at least not at first”: the night first belonged to “some other, random, forgettable soldiers”.

What changed in Black Ops III

  • Weapons: the walls and the Mystery Box sell the weapons of Black Ops III instead of those of World War II or of the Cold War, with a few old ones back in the Box, such as the MP40 and the StG-44.
  • Starting room: the RK5 and the Sheiva, 500 each, replace the Kar98k and the M1 Carbine.
  • Sniper cabinet: it now holds the Locus for 5000 points, where it held a scoped Kar98k for 1500.
  • Der Wunderfizz: a machine upstairs gives a random perk for 1500 points, so the map is no longer limited to Mule Kick.
  • Perks: as on every Zombies Chronicles map, Double Tap is Double Tap II and Widow’s Wine takes the place of PhD Flopper.
  • GobbleGum: two machines, one in the starting room and one upstairs.
  • Wonder Weapons: the Ray Gun Mark II joins the Ray Gun, the Thundergun and the Monkey Bomb in the Box.
  • Pack-a-Punch: there is still no machine, but the Wall Power and Crate Power GobbleGums give upgraded weapons.
  • Power-ups: the Death Machine joins the drop pool.
  • Characters: the Ultimis crew is silent, where the Black Ops version gave them voice lines from other maps.
  • Easter egg: a new hunt for Samantha dolls ends with a Max Ammo and a song.
  • Achievement: I said we’re CLOSED!, new with Zombies Chronicles.
  • Censorship: the swastikas are replaced by Iron Crosses, and the intro title reads “Call of Duty Zombies” instead of “Nazi Zombies”.

Perks

The map has no power switch, so every machine works from the first round.

Mule Kick

4000 points, in the starting room. A third weapon slot, lost with the perk when the player goes down.

Der Wunderfizz

1500 points a spin, upstairs, next to the stairs that lead down to the Help room. It draws one perk among Juggernog, Quick Revive, Speed Cola, Double Tap II, Stamin-Up, Deadshot Daiquiri and Widow’s Wine, and never gives Mule Kick.

Weapons

Nine things are bought off the walls: eight weapons and frag grenades, plus the Locus in the sniper cabinet upstairs. Two of them, the RK5 and the Sheiva, are in the starting room.

Locus

5000 points, a bolt-action sniper rifle, from the sniper cabinet on the upper floor.

The Mystery Box of the Help room on its wooden crates, Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

950 points a spin, in the Help room, where it stays for the whole game.

Ray Gun, third-person render, Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Ray Gun

The first Wonder Weapon of the series, which debuted on this map. From the Box.

Ray Gun Mark II, third-person render, Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Ray Gun Mark II

The three-round burst successor of the Ray Gun, added to every Zombies Chronicles map. From the Box.

Thundergun, third-person render, Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Thundergun

A blast of air that throws back every zombie in front of the player, already in the Box of the Black Ops version.

Monkey Bomb

It draws the zombies before it explodes. From the Box.

Every wall weapon, the Box and the GobbleGum upgrades

Easter eggs

There is still no main quest. The radio of the Help room, to the right of the Mystery Box, plays music when it is shot or knifed, as it did in the earlier versions; on Black Ops III it plays songs from throughout Zombies. The new secret is a hunt for Samantha dolls.

Four hidden buttons

Under the shelves at the bottom of the stairs by the Mystery Box, on the ceiling above the spiral staircase of the starting room, high on the wall to the left of Mule Kick, and upstairs on the wall across from the Argus.

The Samantha dolls

A first doll appears on the floor in front of the RK5. It starts a music box tune that leads to a spinning doll, most of the time outside the map, to shoot; five or six follow.

The reward

Back at the first doll, a skeleton hand drags it into the ground, a Max Ammo drops and a song starts.

Achievements

Zombies Chronicles added one achievement of its own to Nacht der Untoten.

Trivia

The Call of Duty Zombies title of the intro, Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Call of Duty Zombies

The intro title of the map no longer reads “Nazi Zombies”, and every Nazi symbol of the original was replaced, as on the other Zombies Chronicles maps.

  • The game files call the map zm_prototype.
  • Doctor Monty, trying to “scrub up” on his German, explains the name on a radio of the map: “That translates as night of the dead.”
  • The writing “You Must Ascend From Darkness” is still on the wall of the starting room, and “Salvation Lies Above” on the wall of the Help room.
