The First Room

On ZFRR, the Nacht der Untoten First Room is the starting room: the large ground-floor room of the bunker where the players spawn. Everything they can reach without opening anything is the First Room, and on this map that is a single room.

Two ways lead out of it, both closed in a First Room game: the “Help” door, to the right of the spawn, for 1000 points, which opens onto the Help room and the Mystery Box, and the sofa barricade on the stairs, also 1000, which leads upstairs. The room has five boarded windows, the zombies’ only way in, and each board you put back is worth 10 points, up to a cap per round.

Kar98k

200 points, a bolt-action rifle on the wall of the starting room. The cheapest wall buy of the map.

M1 Carbine

600 points, a semi-automatic rifle with a 15-round magazine, on the wall of the starting room.

Those are the only two wall buys of the room. The Mystery Box, the Thompson and the shotguns are all behind a door. The map has no power switch, no trap and no Pack-a-Punch, and the Black Ops version has a single perk, which stands in the starting room:

The Mule Kick machine lit green in a corner of the starting room in Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Mule Kick

4000 points, a third weapon slot, to the left of the M1 Carbine. It only appears when the game is connected to Xbox Live, PlayStation Network or Steam.

Every game starts with an M1911, the knife and two grenades. There is no Quick Revive, no Juggernog and no special round: a First Room game is the pistol, the two rifles on the wall, the five windows and, if you want it, Mule Kick.

B2, whose rules ZFRR follows, has no rule written for Nacht der Untoten alone: the general Black Ops First Room rules apply, and the Nacht der Untoten leaderboard keeps a single board. The ones that matter most here:

Doors closed

Opening a door is not allowed, the Help door and the stairs included.

Mule Kick removal

Playing without Mule Kick, by starting the game offline on Steam or with the Plutonium option, is allowed in solo and not allowed in co-op.

Monkey Bombs after a reconnect

A 2025 vote allowed players to use the Monkey Bombs they have after reconnecting to a game of Nacht der Untoten or Verrückt.

Platforms

Steam, Plutonium, BGamer, Xbox and PlayStation are allowed; Wii is not. On Steam and BGamer the host must show the files of the zone/Common folder and launch the game from its executable.

Fog and graphic content

Removing the fog is not allowed. The graphic content setting may only be changed in solo, between games.

Boarding

Letting zombies wait behind the windows to move the round along is allowed.

Overview

Nacht der Untoten, German for “Night of the Undead”, is the first Zombies map: a hidden bonus of Call of Duty: World at War in 2008, unlocked by finishing the campaign. Call of Duty: Black Ops brought it back in a remastered version, first with the Hardened and Prestige editions of the game, then in the Rezurrection map pack, where it was also called “Night”. This page covers that Black Ops version.

The bunker has three rooms and nothing to unlock: the starting room, the Help room with the Mystery Box, and an upper floor split in two. An Allied plane has crashed on the airfield outside, and the survivors hold out in the building against an endless horde.

The Black Ops version keeps the layout, the wall weapons and their prices, and changes the rest:

  • The four unnamed Marines are replaced by Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo and Richtofen.
  • The Mystery Box gives Cold War-era weapons instead of the World War II ones, plus the Thundergun and the Monkey Bomb.
  • Mule Kick was added to the starting room by a title update in autumn 2011.
  • The Carpenter joins the power-ups, and the on-screen timers of Insta-Kill and Double Points are replaced by icons.
  • The Thompson costs 1200, the price written on its wall, which said 1500 by mistake in World at War.
  • The radio of the Help room plays different music, and a new song, Undone, is hidden in the barrels outside.

Characters

The Black Ops version is played with the four characters of Shi No Numa and Der Riese, using voice lines from the other maps:

Portrait of "Tank" Dempsey in a carved wooden frame, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

“Tank” Dempsey

An American Marine.

Portrait of Nikolai Belinski in his hood and cap, in a carved wooden frame, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Nikolai Belinski

A Soviet soldier.

Portrait of Takeo Masaki in a carved wooden frame, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Takeo Masaki

An officer of the Imperial Japanese Army.

Portrait of Edward Richtofen in uniform, in a carved wooden frame, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Edward Richtofen

A German doctor of Group 935.

Samantha Maxis is the announcer, as on the other maps of the saga.

Enemies

Black Ops zombies with glowing eyes climbing toward the players, "You must ascend from darkness" written on the wall behind them in Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Only zombies: undead German soldiers, a mix of SS and regular infantry, with the zombie models of Black Ops. They tear the boards off the windows to get in, and in this version they also swing at players through the barricades. There are no Hellhounds and no special round of any kind: the only thing that changes from round to round is how many there are and how fast they move.

Perks

In World at War the map had no perk at all. The Black Ops version has exactly one, Mule Kick, for 4000 points, in the starting room: it lets a player carry a third weapon, and the weapon is lost with the perk when the player goes down. It came with the title update of September 27, 2011 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and with patch 1.15 on PC on October 11, 2011. Outside Moon, it only shows up when the game is connected online.

There is no Juggernog, so two hits down a player all game, and no Quick Revive, so in solo a down is the end of the game.

Weapons

Every game starts with an M1911, the knife and two grenades. Eight things are bought off the walls, two of them in the starting room, and one more comes out of a cabinet upstairs:

Starting room

The Kar98k for 200 and the M1 Carbine for 600. In the First Room.

Help room

The Double-Barreled Shotgun and the Thompson, 1200 each.

Upstairs

The sawed-off Double-Barreled Shotgun for 1200, the M1897 Trench Gun for 1500, the BAR for 1800 and the Stielhandgranates for 250.

Sniper Cabinet

A scoped Kar98k for 1500, upstairs, found on no other map.

The Mystery Box brings the rest: the Cold War weapons of Black Ops, the Ray Gun, the Thundergun and the Monkey Bomb.

Every weapon, its price and its room

The bunker

Three doors in all can be opened on the map, each for 1000 points.

The starting room

The Help room

Behind the door marked “Help”, whose last letter was never finished, so that it reads “Hell”. Smaller and longer, with the Mystery Box, a radio and a barricaded hole that opens onto a dead-end cave.

The upper floor

The largest area, in two parts, each with its own staircase down, full of rubble. The well-known camping corner is by the Stielhandgranates, next to the stairs above the starting room.

Mystery Box

The Mystery Box of the Help room, its question marks glowing, with the prompt Press for a Random Weapon, Cost 950, in Nacht der Untoten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

950 points a spin, in the Help room, and nowhere else: the map has a single Box spot, so the Box never moves. It is out of reach in a First Room game. The power-ups of the map are Max Ammo, Insta-Kill, Double Points, Nuke and Carpenter; there is no Fire Sale and no Death Machine.

Easter egg and secrets

Nacht der Untoten has no main quest. The Black Ops version has two songs and a few details left from World at War:

Undone

Shoot three red barrels outside the windows. They can all be hit from the starting room, so the song can be played at the very start of a First Room game.

The radio

Knife or shoot the radio of the Help room, to the right of the Mystery Box, and it plays music from the campaign and from Dead Ops Arcade.

The writing on the walls

“You must ascend from darkness” is chalked on a wall, and the Help door reads “Hell”.

The songs and the details, one by one

Achievements

Nacht der Untoten has no achievement of its own: the Rezurrection achievements are all for Moon. Of the base-game Zombies achievements of Black Ops, one can be earned here:

The Collector achievement icon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The Collector

Buy every weapon off the walls in a single Zombies game, 20 Gamerscore or a Silver trophy. On Nacht der Untoten, the Sniper Cabinet is said to count among them. It needs every door open, so it cannot be done in a First Room game.

Trivia

  • The Rezurrection poster calls the map simply “Night”. Its teaser art shows dual-wield Makarovs, a weapon the map never had.
  • The game files call this version zombie_cod5_prototype; the World at War original was nazi_zombie_prototype.
  • The bunker is the same building as in the World at War multiplayer map Airfield and the campaign mission Hard Landing.
  • “Ascend from darkness” was also one of Viktor Reznov’s steps out of the Vorkuta prison in the Black Ops campaign.
  • In Black Ops, the barrels outside can still be blown up, but the trucks no longer can.
  • The same building returns as “The Prototype” on TranZit in Black Ops II, and as the central hub of Revelations in Black Ops III.
