The First Room

The windows of the Juggernog side starting room, with the courtyard and its fountain behind the glass, Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

On ZFRR, Verrückt has two First Rooms, as it did on World at War and Black Ops. The ground floor of Wittenau Sanatorium is cut in two by an electric door that only opens once the power is on, and the power switch is far away, behind several doors. Doors closed, it never opens: the Juggernog side and the Quick Revive side are two closed rooms with a wall between them. On Black Ops III the players start with a 1911, the knife and frag grenades, or with an RK5 instead of the 1911 once the Revelations Easter egg A Better Tomorrow has been completed.

The remaster keeps the layout of the original. What changes in the room is what hangs on its walls: the German and American rifles of 2008 are gone, and each side now sells the same two Black Ops III weapons.

RK5 burst pistol, Gunsmith render, Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

RK5

500 points, a three-round burst pistol, on the wall of each starting room.

Sheiva semi-automatic rifle, Gunsmith render, Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Sheiva

500 points, a semi-automatic rifle, also on both sides. On the original these two spots sold bolt-action and semi-automatic rifles of the Second World War.

The two rooms are not the same room, and the leaderboard ranks them apart:

The dentist chair under its lamp in the operating room of the Juggernog side, promotional image of Zombies Chronicles, Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The dentist chair

The operating room of the Juggernog side, with its chair under a lamp. Using the wheel on the side of the chair plays the sound of a drill and the screams of a patient.

Juggernog side

The German wing. The Juggernog machine stands in it, but like every machine of the map it needs the power, so it stays in sight and out of reach. The room has four windows and, besides the electric door, a single way out, up to the left balcony. A Mystery Box spot is marked by a pile of rubble with a teddy bear on it.

Quick Revive side

The American wing. The Quick Revive machine is in the room, near the door to the right hallway. The room has three windows and two doors, one to a dead-end back room and one to the right hallway and its stairs.

The electric door

Bulletproof, with “Power will reunite you” chalked on it. A GobbleGum lets a player through it: with Anywhere But Here!, a player can reach the other side before the power is on.

GobbleGum machine

On Black Ops III a GobbleGum machine can be reached from a starting room, so a player of a gum board can chew during the game. On the reference board, gums are not allowed at all.

No hellhounds

Zombies are still the only enemy of Verrückt. There is no trap in either room: the Electro-Shock Defenses are on the balconies and need the power.

Which room a player gets is not a choice. In solo and with two players, everyone starts on the same side, drawn at random, and players restart until the game gives them the side they want. With three or four players the game splits the team between the two rooms. The rooms of the original, with their prices and windows, are described door by door in the Verrückt book of Black Ops.

The Verrückt (Black Ops III) leaderboard is kept apart from the boards of World at War and Black Ops: the walls are the same, but the weapons, the zombies and the movement are not. It has seven categories. Its rules:

Jugg side

Solo and two players, on the side with the Juggernog machine. On this side only, the rules allow a game started at round 10.

QR side

Solo and two players, on the side with the Quick Revive machine.

Full map

Three and four players, the team split over both rooms as the game deals it.

Double side

Two players, one in each room. Unofficial on ZFRR: no ranking points.

Reversed

Three players, two on the Quick Revive side and the third alone on the Juggernog side, with a clear proof of the category, such as the after action report. Unofficial on ZFRR, and the game can also count on the regular board.

No GobbleGums

The reference boards are played without any gum, neither Classic nor Mega, and each player shows their gum loadout before, during or after the game. The rules still allow Crawl Space in co-op games for sleeper purposes.

Classic GobbleGums

A board of its own, from solo to four players, played with Classic GobbleGums only.

Mega GobbleGums

A board of its own, from solo to four players, played with at least one Mega GobbleGum. Flavor Hexed, Self Medication, Near Death Experience, Power Vacuum and Round Robbin are not allowed.

Doors closed

No door or barrier may be opened, every round is played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded. In co-op, a player who does not show the lobby before or after the game needs their own point of view. A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Overview

Verrückt, German for “insane”, is the second Zombies map, first released for World at War in Map Pack 1 on March 19, 2009, then remastered for Black Ops. Its Black Ops III version is one of the eight maps of Zombies Chronicles, the fifth downloadable content pack of the game, sold apart from the Season Pass. The mission briefing: “Electroshock therapy. Chemically engineered beverages. Hordes of Undead Nazis. Find the power to unite and send them back to their graves!” The first version of the map has its own book: Verrückt.

The game opens on the words “Berlin, Germany, Wittenau Sanatorium, September, 1945”. On World at War the map was played by four Marines; Black Ops III gives it back to the Ultimis crew, as Black Ops did, with their lines from Kino der Toten. Doctor Monty, who narrates Zombies Chronicles, comments the map on a radio: “You weren’t there either. But then you were.”

The loading screen is a plan of the asylum drawn on paper, which marks the two starts, the buyables, the perks, the power switch and the three zappers.

What changed in Black Ops III

The fountain of the courtyard, filled with blood and topped with a statue, seen through a window, Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The fountain

The fountain of the courtyard is new: it holds the statue of a little girl and is filled with blood.

Weapons

The walls and the Mystery Box sell Black Ops III weapons in place of those of the Second World War. A few old ones stay on the walls: the MP40 and the StG-44, where the original sold them.

Wonder weapons

The Wunderwaffe DG-2 and the Ray Gun Mark II join the Ray Gun in the Box; the Winter’s Howl of Black Ops is gone. The lines the characters speak about the Wunderwaffe were recorded for Kino der Toten and cut from it.

Perks

The machines stay where they were. Double Tap becomes Double Tap II, Mule Kick returns, and a Der Wunderfizz machine is added.

GobbleGum

GobbleGum machines are added, as in every map of Zombies Chronicles.

No Pack-a-Punch

Like Nacht der Untoten and Shi No Numa, Verrückt has no Pack-a-Punch Machine, in any version.

Fire Sale

It joins the power-ups, next to Insta-Kill, Double Points, Nuke, Max Ammo and Carpenter.

Zombies

Their artificial intelligence follows the rest of Black Ops III.

Symbols

The swastikas of the original are replaced by other German military symbols. The mission briefing and the radio of Doctor Monty still say “Nazis”.

Music

A new musical Easter egg, Samantha’s Sorrow, joins Lullaby for a Dead Man. The round start theme is the one of the zombie mannequins Easter egg of Nuk3town.

Perks

All the machines need the power, which is behind the doors of both starting rooms.

Juggernog

2500, in the starting room of the Juggernog side.

Quick Revive

1500, in the starting room of the Quick Revive side.

Speed Cola

3000, in the room between the right balcony and the kitchen.

Double Tap II

2000, on the left balcony, where the loading screen draws it.

Mule Kick

4000.

Der Wunderfizz

1500, upstairs on the left side, across from a Mystery Box spot by the Power Room. On Verrückt it only gives Stamin-Up, Widow’s Wine and Deadshot Daiquiri, the perks that have no machine of their own.

Weapons

The wall buys of the remaster, with their price. The spot is given where the sources name it.

Ray Gun Mark II

From the Box, added to every map of Zombies Chronicles.

Ray Gun and Monkey Bomb

Both from the Box, as on Black Ops.

Annihilator

The revolver of The Giant can also come out of the Box.

Easter egg

Verrückt has no main quest in any version. The remaster keeps the song of the original, Lullaby for a Dead Man, played by flushing the leftmost of the three toilets upstairs on the German side three times, as described in the Verrückt book. It adds a second song, with a hide and seek game:

One of the three toilets of the bathroom upstairs on the German side, Verrückt, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Samantha’s Sorrow

The same three toilets, flushed nine, three and five times from right to left, a nod to Group 935, make a doll of Samantha appear by the Der Wunderfizz. Nine dolls then hide around the asylum and must be shot. The song by Brian Tuey starts when the first doll is taken back, and a Max Ammo drops.

Achievements

Zombies Chronicles brings one achievement for Verrückt, one of the three that were new with the pack. It is worth 15 Gamerscore, or a Bronze trophy.

Acted Alone

Headshot 20 zombies in the courtyard from the second floor of the asylum. The name refers to Lee Harvey Oswald, said to have “acted alone”.

  • The numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42 of the TV show Lost are still read on a radio near the power switch.
  • The numbers 935 can be seen on the gate of the asylum.
  • The PC version of Zombies Chronicles came out on June 15, 2017, with the Xbox One one, almost a month after PlayStation 4.
