The First Room

The Forecastle at the start of a game, with chunks of ice on the deck as the iceberg scrapes past the bow, Voyage of Despair, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Voyage of Despair is the Forecastle, the open deck at the bow of the Titanic where every game begins. The players land on it just as the ship strikes the iceberg: the wall of ice slides past the railing and chunks of it lie scattered over the planks. Each player starts with 500 points and the weapon, equipment and special weapon chosen in the loadout.

The Forecastle is wide and open, framed by the white superstructure of the ship at its back. The ways out are marked by blue seals: in the recorded games, a door for 750 points in the wall of the superstructure, and piles of debris for 500 and 750 points on the stairs that climb towards the Bridge. In a First Room game they all stay shut, so the Sentinel Artifact at the stern is never reached.

Strife pistol, menu render, Voyage of Despair, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Strife

500 points, a semi-automatic pistol, on a wall of the Forecastle. Its outline is drawn in blue on the crates at the foot of the superstructure.

Essex Model 07 lever-action rifle, menu render, Voyage of Despair, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Essex Model 07

500 points, a lever-action rifle, on the white wall of the superstructure.

Those are the only two wall buys of the Forecastle. On the Purist board, they are also the only starting weapons allowed besides the Welling revolver.

The Danu altar

A green statue of the goddess by the railing, to the right of the spawn, and the only perk of the First Room. It serves the perk the player placed there in the loadout, at the price of that perk: Quick Revive for 2000 points in one recorded game, Dying Wish for 4000 in another.

No Mystery Box

None of the eight spots of the box is on the Forecastle, so a First Room game is played with the two walls and the power-ups.

No Pack-a-Punch

The four pedestals only appear once the Sentinel Artifact of the Poop Deck is activated, at the other end of the ship.

Special enemies

They all come onto the Forecastle. The Catalysts appear from around round 8, the Stokers climb in through the barriers like the zombies, and the Blightfathers join them from round 15.

A training ground

With its open deck, the Forecastle is one of the two places, with the Poop Deck, where players say they run the horde in circles. The Gauntlet mode even has a round about it: Fore!, defend the Forecastle without special weapons.

The Voyage of Despair leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. Its reference category is Purist, played on Hardcore. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door or clearing any debris.

Hardcore

The game is played on Hardcore difficulty, and custom mutations are not allowed.

No elixirs or talismans

None may be used. The rules still name the elixir loadout to equip: Aftertaste, Point Drops, Anti Entrapment, Newtonian Negation, Quacknarok and Arsenal Accelerator for the Classics, and Conflagration Liquidation, Who’s Keeping Score, Extra Credit and Dividend Yield for the Megas.

Weapons

The starting weapon is the Welling, the Strife or the Essex Model 07. Only frag grenades and Acid Bombs may be used, and no special weapon.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Black Ops 4 rules

No bots, though split-screen is allowed; nothing injected into the game but fast restarts; no duplicated weapons, no going down on purpose to refill ammunition or charge a special weapon, and no killing hordes with repeated shield explosions.

Video

The whole game must be recorded, with the pregame lobby and every player’s loadout shown. The health, the points, the round counter and the top right of the screen must never be covered.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Besides Purist, the leaderboard has seven other categories: No Elixirs, Classic Elixirs and All Elixirs on Normal difficulty, then Classic and All Elixirs on Hardcore and on Realistic.

Little do Scarlett Rhodes, Diego Necalli, Bruno Delacroix and Stanton Shaw suspect that a giant iceberg will be the least of their problems…»

CharactersScarlett Rhodes, Diego Necalli, Bruno Delacroix, Stanton Shaw
Players1 to 4

In the intro, the four of them steal the Sentinel Artifact from a safe in the cargo room. A hooded man, a member of the Order, snatches it from Scarlett, tears off the key she wears around her neck and fits it into the artifact. Dark clouds pour out of it and turn the people on board into zombies. The crew fights its way up to the deck just as the iceberg looms ahead.

The map covers most of the upper decks and a few lower ones, from the Forecastle at the bow to the Poop Deck at the stern. The ship strikes the iceberg as the game begins, then stops and slowly tips forward. The Cargo Hold and the engine rooms are flooded.

Characters

Scarlett Rhodes in her red bandana, intro cinematic, Voyage of Despair, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Scarlett Rhodes

The daughter of the explorer Alistair Rhodes, British, who gathered his three companions to find him after his kidnapping. In the intro, she cracks the safe with «a mechanism of her own invention».

Diego Necalli holding a glass of champagne at the party, intro cinematic, Voyage of Despair, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Diego Necalli

A Mexican rebel of the Revolution and a writer of his own adventures. He charms Lady McKendrick to steal the key of the millionaire suite.

Bruno Delacroix with a red glow on his forehead, ending cinematic, Voyage of Despair, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Bruno Delacroix

A former Paris gangster turned French Foreign Legionnaire. A red glow on his forehead closes the ending.

S

Stanton Shaw

A London-born alchemist and an old friend of Alistair Rhodes. He sends the knockout gas down the pneumatic tubes, and at the end he knows where to go next: Delphi.

T

The Order

A hooded cultist of the Order, who steals the artifact and turns into a zombie after Scarlett punches him out of the bubble of the artifact. His voice is heard on the first phonograph cylinder of the map, on the morning of April 14.

Enemies

A Stoker armored with coal raising its shovel on a deck of the ship, Voyage of Despair, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Stokers

Former stokers of the ship, armed with a shovel and armored with coal, that also throw fireballs. They come in through the barriers like the zombies, one at a time at first and then in pairs. Their weak points lie under the coal of the head and the upper torso.

Zombies

The passengers and crew of the Titanic. Among them, the intro shows Captain Edward Smith turning.

Catalysts

From around round 8, a zombie tears itself open to reveal one. Fire ones walk slowly and explode, water ones make the zombies around them stronger, poison ones hurt the players near them, and electric ones blind and deafen with a scream.

Blightfathers

Not before round 15. They come out of a zombie like the Catalysts, grab the player with their tongue, spit homing vomit and can foul a utility, which then costs 500 points to clean. The sacs on their back and elbows are their weak points.

The Eye of Malice and Despair

The boss of the main quest, an eye that rises from the iceberg. The guides also call it the Sky-Eye.

Perks

In Black Ops 4, the player chooses four perks in the loadout before the game, and the map serves them at four altars, one per god of the Chaos story. The altars need no power.

Danu

On the Forecastle, to the right of the spawn. The only altar of the First Room.

Ra

In the Dining Hall, facing the front of the ship.

Zeus

In the 1st Class Lounge.

Odin

In the Engine Room near the back of the ship, under the Poop Deck. It can only be reached after the Sentinel Artifact.

A fifth perk can be earned by bringing six fish to a box on the Sun Deck.

Weapons

The starting weapon, the equipment and the special weapon are chosen in the loadout. Nineteen wall buys hang around the ship, from the Strife and the Essex Model 07 of the Forecastle, 500 points each, to the Koshka of the Engine Room for 4500. The Mystery Box costs 950 points and has eight spots, none of them on the Forecastle.

Homunculus wonder weapon, a small creature with a club, render, Voyage of Despair, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Homunculus

From the Mystery Box: a small creature thrown into the horde, which kills zombie after zombie for about twenty seconds.

Kraken

The wonder weapon of the map, a three-barrelled hand cannon from the Mystery Box or from a free quest started by a Stoker key. Packed, it becomes the Cirein-Cròin Crasher, and the Distillation Kit of the Engine Room gives it one of four elements.

Every wall buy, its price and its place

The Kraken, its free quest and its four elements

The Sentinel Artifact and the Pack-a-Punch

The Sentinel Artifact, on the Poop Deck, plays the part of the power: once it is activated, the red doors open, the portals of fast travel start working and four Pack-a-Punch pedestals appear, on the Poop Deck, in the Turbine Room, on the Lower Grand Staircase and in the Cargo Hold. The Pack-a-Punch then moves from one pedestal to another every few rounds. The flooded rooms can be drained with a valve.

Ballistic Shield

The shield is built from three parts on the workbench of the Poop Deck, and carries an automatic gun. A long side quest, from the Mail Rooms to a flying car, turns it into the frost-covered Svalinn Guard, which fires Cryofreeze rounds.

Easter egg: Abandon Ship

The main quest, Abandon Ship, is the trial of the Sentinel Artifact: clocks and dials, four elemental trials, a poison Kraken that floods the Turbine Room, the planets shot down from the sky, a race against the ice, and a boss fight in five phases against the Eye of Malice and Despair.

Secrets

Free perk

Six fish shot down around the ship and brought to the Sun Deck.

Drowning

Four coins shot around the ship play the song sung by Malukah.

Special weapon fire sale

Three sheets of music on three pianos, and the Mystery Box gives special weapons.

Gauntlet: Unsinkable

Since January 2019, the Gauntlet mode has a challenge of thirty rounds on Voyage of Despair, Unsinkable, with a harder version, Unsinkable (Hard). Each round has its own rule, and three failed rounds end the game. Round 25, Fore!, asks the team to defend the Forecastle without special weapons.

Achievements

The map has ten achievements of its own, from Trialling Experience, for acquiring the Sentinel Artifact, to Abandon Ship, the silver trophy of the main quest.
