The First Room

The spawn room on the top floor of the main hut, with the GobbleGum machine on the left and the railing of the stairwell, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Shi No Numa on Black Ops III is the same as on the original: the top floor of the main hut, the two-storey building in the middle of the swamp. The players spawn under its torn roof, beside the body of a man hanging from a beam, with 500 points, a pistol, the knife and frag grenades. The pistol is the 1911; gameplay recorded at the release of the DLC in May 2017 shows the MR6 instead.

Two ways lead out, and both stay closed in a First Room game: the debris on the stairs, which drop to the ground floor of the hut for 1000 points, and the bamboo fence of the Warning Room, the next room on the same floor. The zombies climb in through the windows and the openings of the room, as in the original.

RK5 burst pistol, Gunsmith render, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

RK5

500 points, a three-round burst pistol, on a wall of the spawn room. It takes the place of the Arisaka of the original.

Sheiva semi-automatic rifle, Gunsmith render, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Sheiva

500 points, a semi-automatic marksman rifle, on a wall of the spawn room, to the right of a window. It takes the place of the Gewehr 43.

The remaster changes the room more than any update did on Black Ops. The Mule Kick machine is gone, and two Black Ops III machines stand in its place:

The Quick Revive machine in the dark corner of the spawn room, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The Quick Revive machine

500 points in solo, 1500 in co-op. It replaces the Mule Kick of the Black Ops version and is the only perk in the room. Shi No Numa has no power switch, so it works from the first round.

The GobbleGum machine beside the stairwell of the spawn room, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The GobbleGum machine

On the floor of the spawn room, next to the railing of the stairwell. The ZFRR reference board allows no gum, so it is never used in a record game.

The stairwell of the spawn room blocked by debris and barbed wire, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The stairs

The stairwell in the middle of the floor is blocked by debris and barbed wire. Clearing it costs 1000 points and opens the ground floor of the hut.

The body of Peter McCain hanging from the roof of the spawn room, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Peter McCain

The American agent hangs from the roof of the room, as in the original. A radio of Dr. Monty, new to this version, sits in the same room, to the left of the window next to the Sheiva.

No Mystery Box, no trap

The first spot of the Mystery Box is downstairs, and the zipline, the Flogger and the Electro-Shock traps are all behind the doors. A First Room game is played with the starting pistol, the two walls and the power-ups.

The Shi No Numa (Black Ops III) leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. It is kept apart from the board of the Black Ops version: the layout is the same, but the weapons, the perks and the zombies are not. The reference board is No GobbleGums, and its rules are:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening the stairs or the fence.

No GobbleGums

Neither Classic nor Mega GobbleGums are allowed. The board names one exception: Crawl Space is allowed in co-op games, for sleeper purposes.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded and each player shows their gum loadout before, during or after the game. In co-op, a player who does not show the lobby before or after the game must have their own point of view recorded.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Two more categories have their own boards, from solo to four players. Classic GobbleGums allows the Classic gums only. Mega GobbleGums asks for at least one Mega gum, and bans Flavor Hexed, Self Medication, Near Death Experience, Power Vacuum and Round Robbin.

Overview

Shi No Numa, Japanese for « Swamp of Death », is the third Zombies map of World at War, brought back on Black Ops III in Zombies Chronicles, the fifth DLC of the game, with seven other remastered maps. The remaster keeps the layout of the original and rebuilds everything else on the Black Ops III engine. Its mission briefing reads: « A ‘swamp of death’ located in Japanese territory, surrounded by a sweltering jungle, hellhounds, and endless armies of the undead. » The Black Ops version of Shi No Numa has its own book.

The story is the one of the original: the Imperial Japanese Army built the Rising Sun Facility around fragments of an Element 115 meteor, Group 935 later worked there with Division 9, and Richtofen brings his three test subjects to the swamp to recover his diary. Black Ops III adds the fractured timelines of its own story: in the Proditone fracture, created by the actions of Primis, the facility falls to the undead much earlier, and Division 9 builds the island facility of Zetsubou No Shima instead.

What changed in Black Ops III

Ray Gun Mark II, third-person render, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Ray Gun Mark II

Added to the Mystery Box, as on every map of Zombies Chronicles.

Wunderwaffe DG-2, third-person render, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Wunderwaffe DG-2

Still in the Mystery Box. On Black Ops III it no longer electrocutes the player who fires it up close, and its bolts deal extra splash damage to the zombies around those they hit.

The arsenal

The walls sell Black Ops III weapons instead of the weapons of the Second World War, apart from the MP40 and the StG-44, which come back on the walls of two huts.

Perks

Quick Revive replaces Mule Kick in the spawn room, Double Tap becomes Double Tap II, and Der Wunderfizz is added in the Storage Hut, the only way to get Stamin-Up, Widow’s Wine and Deadshot Daiquiri.

GobbleGum

GobbleGum machines are added, one of them in the spawn room.

Fire Sale

The power-up is added to the drops of the map.

Still no Pack-a-Punch

The remaster adds no Pack-a-Punch Machine. An upgraded weapon can only come from GobbleGums such as Wall Power and Crate Power.

A new radio and a new song

A radio of Dr. Monty in the spawn room, and the hide-and-seek quest of Samantha’s Sorrow in the Fishing Hut.

The meteor

The fragment of Element 115 outside the map glows blue instead of red, the colour it has in the intro of Origins.

Characters

The four playable characters are the original crew, Ultimis, given at random to each player, as in World at War and Black Ops: « Tank » Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, Takeo Masaki and Edward Richtofen. Samantha Maxis is the announcer, and the hanged body in the spawn room is Peter McCain.

Enemies

Zombies

Soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. They tear the boards off the windows, rise out of the swamp, and the water does not slow them down, while it slows the players.

Hellhounds

Shi No Numa introduced them. On their special rounds the map fogs up and the dogs run at the players, and the round ends with a Max Ammo.

Perks

There is no power switch. Quick Revive stands in the spawn room, and the four huts each get a machine drawn at random among four perks the first time their door is opened. On Black Ops III, the jingle of the hidden machine can be heard by standing near the door of a hut, so the perk can be known before buying it.

Quick Revive

500 in solo, 1500 in co-op. In the spawn room. The huts still show it while their machine spins, but it never lands there.

Juggernog

2500. In a hut, drawn at random.

Speed Cola

3000. In a hut.

Double Tap II

2000. In a hut. It replaces the Double Tap Root Beer of the original.

Mule Kick

4000. In a hut. It can be drawn even though it does not show up while the machine spins.

Der Wunderfizz

To the right on entering the Storage Hut. It only gives the three perks that have no machine on the map: Stamin-Up, Widow’s Wine and Deadshot Daiquiri.

Weapons

The walls sell Black Ops III weapons, with the MP40 and the StG-44 as the only weapons of the original left on them:

Top floor

The RK5 and the Sheiva, 500 each, in the spawn room; the Pharo for 700 and frag grenades for 250 elsewhere on the floor.

Ground floor

The L-CAR 9 and the KRM-262, 750 each, and the Trip Mine for 1000 just outside the hut.

Paths to the huts

The Vesper for 1250 towards the Doctor’s Quarters, the Kuda for 1250 towards the Storage Hut, the VMP for 1300 towards the Comm Room, and the Argus for 1100.

The huts

The KN-44 in the Doctor’s Quarters, the M8A7 in the Storage Hut, the StG-44 in the Comm Room and the MP40 in the Fishing Hut.

Monkey Bomb

From the Mystery Box, like the Ray Gun, the Ray Gun Mark II and the Wunderwaffe DG-2.

Every weapon, its price and its place

Traps and the zipline

The traps and the zipline work as in the original, with no power to turn on. In a First Room game none of them can be reached.

Zombies caught in the Electro-Shock Defenses at the entrance of a hut, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Electro-Shock Defenses

1000 points, at the entrance of each of the four huts.

The Flogger

Spiked logs on a spinning frame, in the courtyard on the way to the Fishing Hut.

The zipline

Once its panel outside the Doctor’s Quarters is switched on, it carries the players between the hut and the top floor of the main hut for 1500 points.

Easter egg

Shi No Numa has no main quest, on Black Ops III as before. Its secrets are songs and radios. The song The One and the three radios about the journey to the future are found as on the Black Ops version. The remaster adds two things:

Samantha’s Sorrow

Four pans shot in the Fishing Hut reveal a doll of Samantha. Found again on the posts of the bridge, it leads to a Max Ammo and the song.

The radio of Dr. Monty

In the spawn room. Monty talks about the place where it « really started » for the crew and about the hellhounds, the offspring of Fluffy.

Samantha’s Sorrow, step by step

Achievements

Zombies Chronicles brings back the achievement of World at War for this map, as a bronze trophy worth 15 Gamerscore:

AchievementHow to unlock it
It's a Trap! achievement icon, a bloody bear trap, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops III ZombiesIt’s a Trap!In Shi No Numa, kill at least one zombie with three different traps in a single round.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zm_sumpf, « swamp » in German, as the World at War files did.
  • Tapping the bookshelf of the Doctor’s Quarters still plays the laugh of Richtofen.
  • Unlike on World at War, opening a hut in the middle of a round no longer spawns extra zombies on Black Ops III.
