The First Room

The starting courtyard around the mainframe, with the Pack-a-Punch shutter on the platform, Der Riese, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Der Riese is the starting courtyard, the yard just outside the factory where the four characters appear at the start of every game. The game files call it the receiver zone: it is built around the mainframe, the pad where every teleport ends, with the Pack-a-Punch Machine locked behind a shutter on the same platform. Every player starts with 500 points, an M1911 pistol, the knife and Stielhandgranate grenades.

The courtyard has two doors, one on each side of the mainframe, both sold for 750 points: the left one opens on the corridor towards the Animal Testing Lab, the right one on the hallway towards the Automobile Garage. The zombies climb in through four barriers: one on each side of the mainframe, one by a generator and one at the bottom of a staircase. In a First Room game the doors stay closed, so the power is never turned on and the teleporters never link.

Kar98k

200 points, a bolt-action rifle and the cheapest wall weapon of the map, on the wall under the factory clock and the Waffenfabrik Der Riese sign.

Gewehr 43

600 points, a semi-automatic rifle with a ten-round magazine, on a dark wall next to one of the two doors.

Those are the only two wall weapons of the courtyard. Bought again from the wall, a weapon refills its ammunition.

The closed shutter of the Pack-a-Punch Machine next to the mainframe, Der Riese, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

The Pack-a-Punch

On the mainframe platform, behind a shutter that only opens once the three teleporters are linked. It never opens with the doors closed.

The mainframe

The landing pad of the three teleporters, in the middle of the courtyard. Without the power it never links, so it stays dead for the whole game.

No perk

The four perk machines of World at War are all behind doors and all need the power.

No Mystery Box

The Box starts in the Courtyard by the power switch, behind the doors, and none of its six spots is in the starting courtyard. A First Room game is played with the two walls, the grenades and the power-ups.

Hellhounds

They come into the courtyard like everywhere else. The first Hellhound round is round 5, 6 or 7, then one every four or five rounds. From round 16, a few dogs can also turn up among the zombies of a normal round.

The last zombie

From round 4, the last zombie of a round starts to sprint as soon as it is alone on the map.

The courtyard also hides a radio, beside a barrel under a ledge near the staircase barrier, and a line written on the wall next to the mainframe: « Embrace the trinity and true power will be yours », a hint that linking the three teleporters opens the Pack-a-Punch.

The courtyard is the same room in both versions: the same two doors, the same Kar98k and Gewehr 43. What sets the World at War First Room apart lies in the zombies and around the room, not in its walls.

The zombies

The zombies of World at War Der Riese have grey-white skin, some of them hairless, with bloody tears and missing flesh on their faces. The Black Ops port brought back the plain Nazi zombies of Kino der Toten.

No Quick Revive in solo

On World at War, Quick Revive gives no self-revive in solo. On Black Ops it sells for 500 points in solo, up to three times, but it is behind the doors in both versions.

No Mule Kick

Mule Kick was only added to the Black Ops version, in update 1.15.

The World at War Box

The Box only holds World at War weapons and the three wonder weapons of the map. On Black Ops it holds the weapons of Black Ops instead.

The Der Riese leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. It is kept apart from the board of the Black Ops version. ZFRR has no rules of its own for World at War: the board follows the High Round rules for World at War written by Zi0 on his site B2, on top of the First Room itself. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Platforms

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are allowed. On PC, only Plutonium with the verified community patch is accepted, and its anticheat output must stay visible on screen; the Steam version is refused.

Video

The whole game must be recorded, publicly available or unlisted, and no overlay may cover the HUD.

The Wunderwaffe bug

The community patch can fix the Wunderwaffe DG-2 bug that lowers the maximum health of a player. In a First Room game the Wunderwaffe is out of reach anyway, since the Box is behind the doors.

Old School ranking

The solo and two-player boards score points in the Old School ranking. A World at War round is converted to its equivalent round on the Black Ops board of the same map, then multiplied by the difficulty coefficient.

Overview

Der Riese, German for « The Giant », is the fourth Zombies map and the last one of Call of Duty: World at War. It came with Map Pack 3, along with three multiplayer maps. It is the map that introduced the teleporters, the Pack-a-Punch Machine, the Monkey Bomb, the Bowie Knife and the Carpenter power-up. The level description: « The Giant is rising. Face the might of the Nazi Zombies in their heartland. This is where it all began. This is where the master plan took shape. Is this where it all ends? » The map came back in Black Ops: see Der Riese on Black Ops, and its Black Ops III remake The Giant.

The map pack

Map Pack 3 brought Der Riese with the multiplayer maps Battery, Revolution and Breach, and ten achievements, all of them for Der Riese.

The menu picture

The factory under a dark sky, the picture of the map in the Zombies menu of World at War.

The story follows Shi No Numa. The four characters come back from the Rising Sun facility to Der Riese, the main base of Group 935, in 1945. With his diary, Richtofen plans to use the teleporters to reach the Moon and confront Samantha Maxis, the girl trapped in the Moon Pyramid Device. In the story, the Wunderwaffe DG-2 later overloads one of the teleporters and sends the crew through time to Kino der Toten.

Enemies

Zombies

The undead soldiers of the factory. Each round counts more of them, and after round 10 their number grows faster.

Hellhounds

They come on their own rounds in a fog, announced by « Fetch me their souls! », and appear in a flash of lightning. The first two Hellhound rounds send six dogs per player, the later ones eight. Killing the last dog of a round drops a Max Ammo.

Dogs from the teleporters

After round 20, using a linked teleporter again less than a minute after the last trip calls four Hellhounds instead of a power-up, with a line from Samantha.

Perks

Four Perk-a-Cola machines, all behind doors and all on the power. Going prone in front of one of them gives 25 points once.

Juggernog

2500, upstairs from the Animal Testing Lab, on the walkway that leads to the bridge.

Speed Cola

3000, in the hallway between the starting courtyard and the Automobile Garage.

Double Tap Root Beer

2000, at the top of the stairs of the Automobile Garage.

Quick Revive

1500, in the Main Factory, by Teleporter C. In solo it gives no self-revive on World at War.

Weapons

Every game starts with the M1911, the knife and Stielhandgranate grenades. The walls sell ten weapons, the Bowie Knife, the Bouncing Betty and grenades, two of them in the starting courtyard:

Starting courtyard

The Kar98k for 200 and the Gewehr 43 for 600. In the First Room.

Behind the left door

The M1A1 Carbine for 600 in the corridor, the M1897 Trench Gun for 1500 in the Animal Testing Lab, and the MP40 for 1000 upstairs.

Behind the right door

The Double-Barreled Shotgun for 1200 in the hallway and the Thompson for 1200 in the Automobile Garage.

Teleporters

The Type 100 for 1000 by Teleporter B, the STG-44 for 1200 and the Bowie Knife for 3000 by Teleporter C.

Courtyard

The FG42 for 1500 and the Bouncing Betty for 1000, near the power switch.

The Wunderwaffe DG-2 in the hands of a player, Der Riese, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Wunderwaffe DG-2

The electric wonder weapon of the map, from the Mystery Box. Its bolt kills up to ten zombies at once. Pack-a-Punched, it becomes the Wunderwaffe DG-3 JZ. On World at War, shocking yourself with it can lower your maximum health for the rest of the game, a bug fixed in the Black Ops port.

A Monkey Bomb with its cymbals on the factory floor, Der Riese, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Monkey Bomb

New on Der Riese and only in its Box: a wind-up monkey that draws the zombies to it with its song, then explodes.

The Bowie Knife held in first person, Der Riese, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Bowie Knife

3000 points on a wall near Teleporter C. It replaces the knife and kills a zombie in one hit through the early rounds.

Ray Gun

From the Box. On Der Riese it can only come out once the Box has moved for the first time.

The Mystery Box costs 950 points and moves between six spots: the Courtyard by the power switch, where it starts, the Animal Testing Lab, the Automobile Garage and each of the three teleporter rooms.

Every weapon, its price and its upgrade

Teleporters and the Pack-a-Punch

The power switch is behind the generator of the Courtyard, the open area behind the factory, reached by dropping down from the upper walkway on the Animal Testing side or on the Automobile Garage side. The power turns on the perks, the traps and the teleporters, and lowers the bridge between the two upper walkways. Each of the three teleporters, A, B and C, must then be linked: activate its pad, then reach the mainframe in the starting courtyard within 30 seconds.

The Pack-a-Punch Machine open on the mainframe platform, Der Riese, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Pack-a-Punch

5000 points, once the three teleporters are linked. The upgraded weapon gets a new name, more damage and more ammunition, and an engraved steel camouflage. Its ammunition costs 4500 points at the wall.

Teleporting

A linked teleporter sends the players back to the mainframe for 1500 points, then needs to recharge. A power-up can drop at the mainframe after the trip.

Electric traps

Three traps, each for 1000 points: one on the Animal Testing side, one on the Automobile Garage side and one at the bridge. Only a player with Juggernog can cross a running trap.

The power, the three teleporters and the Pack-a-Punch

Easter egg: the Fly Trap

Der Riese has no long main quest. Its Easter egg is the Fly Trap, a game of hide and seek with Samantha Maxis that needs the Pack-a-Punch.

The objects of the Fly Trap floating in a ring of green light, Der Riese, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

The flying objects

A control panel, in the alley near the doors of the starting courtyard and the Animal Testing Lab, is shot with a Pack-a-Punched weapon. Eight objects fly out in a ring of green light and scatter, and Samantha says « I want to play a game… Let’s play hide and seek! »

Three hidden spots

A teddy bear with a Bowie Knife in a high window, a teddy bear with a Juggernog bottle in a cage of the Animal Testing Lab, and a Monkey Bomb in the furnace of the Automobile Garage. Any weapon can shoot them.

The reward

The achievement Elevate Your Senses, and « You win… GAME OVER! » from Samantha.

Secrets

The noticeboard near Teleporter C with photos of a lighthouse and a ship, Der Riese, Call of Duty World at War Zombies

Noticeboards

Three noticeboards near the teleporters show photos of zombies in Paris, a theater stage and a lighthouse with a ship, hints of maps planned for a fourth map pack that was cancelled.

Beauty of Annihilation

Three green jars with a spinal cord inside, two in the Animal Testing Lab and one near Teleporter B, play the song of the map.

Mister Monkey

A Monkey Bomb thrown into a furnace screams instead of playing its song, and Samantha asks why you are so cruel to Mister Monkey.

Achievements

Map Pack 3 added ten achievements and trophies, all of them for Der Riese, worth 25 Gamerscore each: Elevate Your Senses, Locksmith, 40 Knives, Der Electrician, Frequent Flyer, Wacker Packer, The Might of the Monkey, Perkaholics Anonymous, Acquire Waffle Weapons and Pack Addict. Only Perkaholics Anonymous, round 20 without buying a perk, asks for nothing behind the doors.

What changed in Black Ops

Der Riese came back in Call of Duty: Black Ops, first with the Hardened and Prestige editions on November 9, 2010, then in the Rezurrection map pack. See Der Riese on Black Ops for that version.

  • The graphics were improved, and the zombies went back to the look of the earlier maps.
  • The Mystery Box holds the weapons of Black Ops, while the World at War wall weapons stay on the walls.
  • The Wunderwaffe no longer takes away the effect of Juggernog when it shocks its user, and its upgrade, the DG-3 JZ, turns gold.
  • Quick Revive can be bought in solo for 500 points, up to three times, to revive yourself.
  • Mule Kick was added in update 1.15, for 4000 points.
  • The finger and the eyeball of the loading screen were removed.

Trivia

  • The map is based on Der Riese, a real top-secret German facility in Lower Silesia, today in Poland, built almost entirely underground. Breslau is now Wrocław.
  • The map on the wall that lights up with each linked teleporter was partly inspired by the British game show The Crystal Maze, according to Jason Blundell.
  • The clock above the entrance to the Courtyard reads 1:15, a nod to Element 115.
  • The song of the game over screen is « 115 », heard in full on the next map, Kino der Toten.
  • During a teleport, words written on the walls float across the screen, with close-ups of zombie heads.
  • While playing the map, the status of a player on World at War reads « Bathing in Nazi Zombie Blood ».
  • The Bowie Knife was cheap to make: according to Jason Blundell, melee weapons were the fastest and cheapest weapons to build on a tight budget.
  • The map also came out on iOS on September 30, 2010, in Call of Duty: Zombies.
