The First Room

On ZFRR, the Shi No Numa First Room is the top floor of the main hut, the large two-storey building in the middle of the swamp. The players spawn upstairs, under the body of a man hanging from the roof, and everything they can reach without opening anything is the First Room: one floor, no stairs, no outside.

Two ways lead out of it, both closed in a First Room game: the debris on the stairs for 1000 points, and the wooden fence into the next room upstairs, the Warning Room, for 1000. Either one opens the ground floor of the hut and, from there, the way outside. The room has four windows to board.

Arisaka

200 points, ammo 100. The Japanese bolt-action rifle, on a wall of the spawn room.

The chalk outline of the Gewehr 43 beside a lattice window of the spawn room, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Gewehr 43

600 points, ammo 300. A semi-automatic rifle, on another wall of the same room.

Every game starts with the M1911, the knife and two Stielhandgranates. The Mystery Box is not in the room: its starting spot is downstairs, at the foot of the stairs.

The Mule Kick machine in the spawn room, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Mule Kick

4000 points, a third weapon slot. The only perk in the room, to the left of the Gewehr 43. Shi No Numa has no power switch, and the machine works from the start of the game.

Mule Kick is the only change the Black Ops version made to the room: it came with an update in September 2011 and does not exist in World at War. The four other perks only appear when a hut is opened, so none of them can be bought in a First Room game. There is no trap in the room, and the zipline, which needs a panel outside the Doctor’s Quarters, cannot be used either.

B2, whose rules ZFRR follows, has no rule of its own for Shi No Numa: the general Black Ops First Room rules apply, and the Shi No Numa leaderboard keeps a single board. Those that matter most here:

Doors closed

Opening the stairs or the fence is not allowed. Neither are out of bounds glitches.

Mule Kick removed

Playing without the Mule Kick machine is allowed in solo, not in co-op. On Steam it disappears when the game is launched in offline mode; Plutonium has an option for it.

Fog and foliage

Removing the fog, the foliage, smoke or fire effects is not allowed.

Boarding

Letting zombies bleed out behind the boards of the windows is allowed.

Backspeed

A fixed backspeed is allowed in solo, not in co-op.

Platforms

Steam, Plutonium (with the Competitive-T5 plugin allowed) and BGamer on PC, Xbox and PlayStation on console. The Wii version is refused.

Graphic content

The setting may only be changed in solo, between two games.

Mule Kick, the random perks and the four huts

Overview

A hut and its boardwalk among the trees of the swamp, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Shi No Numa, Japanese for “Swamp of Death”, is the third Zombies map of World at War, remade for Call of Duty: Black Ops. The Black Ops version keeps the layout and the World at War wall weapons, and changes the rest: Black Ops weapons in the Mystery Box, the Monkey Bomb, the Carpenter power-up, a new radio message and, after an update, Mule Kick in the spawn room. Its official description reads: “Maggot ridden corpses. Bug infested swamp. Hundreds of undead Imperial Army. Choose your tactic and defend for your lives!”

The Imperial Japanese Army found fragments of an Element 115 meteor in the swamp and built the Rising Sun Facility around them; Group 935 later worked there with Division 9. Richtofen brings his three test subjects to the facility to recover his diary. The Black Ops version adds a radio in which the four of them, thrown forward in time by the Wunderwaffe DG-2, wonder where and when they are: the link to Kino der Toten.

Characters

Shi No Numa is the map where the four original characters first appear. Each player is given one of them at random.

T

“Tank” Dempsey

The American Marine.

N

Nikolai Belinski

The Russian soldier, never far from his vodka.

T

Takeo Masaki

The Japanese officer, who once oversaw this very facility.

E

Edward Richtofen

The German doctor of Group 935, who leads the others here for his diary.

The body hanging in the spawn room is Peter McCain, the American agent the radio messages are addressed to.

Enemies

Zombies

Soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. They tear the boards off the windows, rise out of the swamp, and the water does not slow them down, while it slows the players.

Crawlers

On this map they drag themselves along with their body upright, not flat on their stomach.

Hellhounds

Shi No Numa introduced them. The map fogs up, lightning strikes and a pack of burning dogs runs at the players. The first dog round comes between rounds 5 and 7, then every 4 or 5 rounds, and the last dog leaves a Max Ammo.

Unlike in World at War, the number of zombies per round in solo keeps growing with the rounds in the Black Ops version.

Perks

No power switch, and no fixed machine except one: Mule Kick, 4000 points, stands in the spawn room, in the First Room. The four others are shared out at random between the four huts, and a machine only shows up when its hut is opened, spinning through the perks for a few seconds before it settles.

The Juggernog machine, priced 2500, standing in one of the huts, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Juggernog

2500. In a hut, drawn at random.

The Quick Revive machine in the Comm Room, priced 1500, with the STG-44 chalk outline on the wall, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Quick Revive

1500, or 500 in solo, where it revives the player on their own; after three uses the machine is gone.

The Double Tap Root Beer machine, priced 2000, in one of the huts, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Double Tap Root Beer

2000.

Speed Cola

3000.

With Mule Kick there are five perks, and a player can hold four at most, so one always stays out of reach. There is no Pack-a-Punch on the map.

How the huts share out the perks

Weapons

The walls keep the weapons of World at War. Twelve things are bought off them, two in the First Room:

Spawn room

The Arisaka for 200 and the Gewehr 43 for 600. In the First Room.

Rest of the main hut

The M1 Carbine for 600 and Stielhandgranates for 250 in the Warning Room, the Thompson for 1200 downstairs.

Paths to the huts

The M1 Garand for 600, the M1897 Trench Gun for 1500 and Bouncing Betties for 1000.

The huts

One weapon each, the BAR, the Type 100, the STG-44 and the MP40.

The Mystery Box holds Black Ops weapons instead: the Python, the CZ75, the Spectre, the HS-10, the HK21, the Crossbow, the Ray Gun, the Monkey Bomb and the Wunderwaffe DG-2, the wonder weapon that made its debut on this map.

Every weapon, its price and its place

The four huts

Around the main hut, four paths cross the swamp to four smaller huts. Each path opens with a gate on the ground floor of the main hut, for 1000 points, then each hut with its own door, for 750. Each hut has a perk machine, a Mystery Box spot, a wall weapon and an Electro-Shock trap at its entrance.

Doctor’s Quarters

The BAR, two windows, and the end of the zipline.

Storage Hut

The Type 100, two windows. The smallest hut, on the side of the meteor.

Comm Room

The STG-44, two windows, and the telephone of the song.

Fishing Hut

The MP40, three windows. The largest hut, reached past the Flogger.

Traps and the zipline

The Electro-Shock Defenses firing bolts of electricity across the doorway of a hut, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Electro-Shock Defenses

1000 points, at the entrance of each hut. Unlike in Verrückt, they need no power.

The Flogger trap and its sign on the path to the Fishing Hut, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The Flogger

750 points, about 30 seconds. Spiked logs on a spinning frame, in the courtyard on the way to the Fishing Hut, usable once that path is open. It kills zombies in one hit, gives no points, and a player can crawl under it.

The zipline power panel beside a lantern outside the Doctor's Quarters, with the prompt to turn on the zipline, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The zipline

Once its panel outside the Doctor’s Quarters has been switched on, it carries the players between the Doctor’s Quarters and the top floor of the main hut for 1500 points. It can kill zombies, and down a player, on its way.

Mystery Box

A Monkey Bomb rising out of the Mystery Box, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

950 points a spin. The box always starts downstairs in the main hut, at the foot of the stairs, outside the First Room. When a teddy bear sends it away, it can land in any of the four huts, opened or not, and a beam of light over the roof shows where it went.

Only one player at a time can own the Wunderwaffe DG-2, the Crossbow or the Ballistic Knife. The power-ups of the map are Max Ammo, Insta-Kill, Double Points, Nuke and, new in the Black Ops version, Carpenter.

Easter egg

Shi No Numa has no main quest. Its secrets are a song, voices on the radios and a few hidden sounds, and the first of them can be done without leaving the First Room:

An old radio on a barrel in the spawn room, one of the three radios of the message to Peter, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The message to Peter

Switch on the three radios of the spawn room. A transmission addressed to Peter, with two sets of coordinates, plays over the loudspeaker. In the First Room.

The radio on a shelf of the Comm Room, one of the three radios of the Black Ops message, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Backtracing to the future

Three more radios, in the Storage Hut, the Comm Room and the Doctor’s Quarters, play the conversation added in the Black Ops version.

The telephone on the desk of the Comm Room that starts the song The One, Shi No Numa, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The One

Use the telephone in the Comm Room until it dials 9-1-1, and the song by Kevin Sherwood plays.

Every radio, the song and the hidden sounds

Secrets

Richtofen’s laugh

Hold the use button on the bookshelf of the Doctor’s Quarters.

The meteor

A red Element 115 meteor pulses with electricity outside the map, near the path to the Storage Hut. Shooting it makes the character comment.

Peter McCain

A grenade can knock his body down from the roof of the spawn room.

Achievements

None of its own. The Rezurrection achievements are all for Moon, and the Shi No Numa achievements of World at War, like Dead Air for the song, did not carry over. The only Black Ops achievement worth chasing here is a base-game one, The Collector: buy every weapon off the walls in a single Zombies game, which on this map means all twelve wall buys.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map “Sumpf”, German for “swamp”; the Black Ops version is zombie_cod5_sumpf.
  • In the Black Ops version, standing in front of a perk machine while it is still spinning shows “You must turn on the power first”, although the map has no power.
  • Downstairs in the main hut, by a burning hole in the wall, a sheet of paper reads “Die Glocke”, then “Der Riese”.
  • The rope of the hanging body does not go round Peter’s neck: it comes out of his backpack.
  • The word “Tunguska” is written in one of the two small huts on the balcony outside the spawn room.
  • The deathsong at the end of a game is Beauty of Annihilation, the song of the next map, Der Riese.
  • A picture of Shi No Numa hangs in the loading screen of Kino der Toten.
