The First Room

The Landing at the start of a game, in the rain under the Welcome to the Trident Retreat sign, with the Atlas 45 in hand, Descent, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Descent is the Landing, the platform on top of the Trident Retreat where the four characters start every game. It is one of the two outdoor areas of the map, swept by rain and lightning, and the scrolling sign above its building warns that the landing is closed due to extreme weather conditions. Every player starts with 500 points, an Atlas 45 pistol and four frag grenades, and without an exoskeleton: the Exo Suits are down in the Galleria, behind the doors.

The Landing has two doors, both sold for 750 points. One leads down into the Reception, marked E1 on the map, the other into the Concierge, marked E2; behind each of them the players drop down a shaft that deals no damage. The two exits of the Transit Tubes, the pneumatic tubes that bring players back up from below, are also on the Landing. In a First Room game the doors stay closed, so neither tube is ever used.

Those are the only two wall weapons of the Landing. The 3D Printer, the Mystery Box of Exo Zombies, starts in the Promenade, and none of its five spots is on the Landing.

The Double Feature keypad

A keypad in the spawn that starts Double Feature, the hardcore mode of the map. It only works once the main quest has been completed, and every player of the game has to use it.

An MK14 on the Upgrade Station of Oz's arena during round 5, cost 2,500, Descent, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Zombies

Oz at round 5

At the start of round 5, Oz takes over the teleporters and pulls every player into his arena, a room no door leads to, before An-G sends them back where they stood. The arena has its own Upgrade Station and 3D Printer.

Exo Medic

The only exo upgrade of the Landing, on its power generator between the two doors: 500 points in solo, where it works as a self-revive and can be bought three times, and 1,500 points with other players, where it makes reviving teammates twice as fast. It does not need the exoskeleton.

Orbital Care Packages

The Landing counts as outside, so care packages land there. In Descent they can hold an XS1 Goliath suit, and the official tips of the map send players to the Landing to look for one.

Oz at rounds 13 and 20

The two battles against Oz also take place in his arena, so a First Room game that lasts meets them like any other game.

Nah, I’m good

The game asks for a First Room of its own: this achievement is earned by reaching round 7 without anyone opening a door.

In a guide recorded for that achievement, a player teleported into the arena at round 5 with the doors still closed upgrades his MK14 there to MK14 Mk 2, then is sent back to the Landing and earns Nah, I’m good at round 7.

The Descent leaderboard is a single board for the map, with no category of its own. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door or barrier.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Community patch

A community patch provides a safe and rule-compliant setup for submissions.

Platforms

On PC the S1X client is allowed. Playing on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 is not allowed, because the game plays too differently on the previous generation.

Video

The whole game must be recorded. A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Overview

Descent is the fourth and last Exo Zombies map of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, released with Reckoning, the fourth and final DLC pack of the game, and the end of the Exo Zombies story. After the sinking of the Atlas carrier in Carrier, the crew hunts Oz down to the Trident Retreat, an Atlas resort built under the Pacific Ocean. Its in-game description reads: “The hunt for Oz leads to a climatic showdown in Atlas’s underwater city. Fight with up to 4 players to survive against endless waves of mutant zombies!” The other Exo Zombies maps are in the book of Advanced Warfare.

The intro picks up at the end of Carrier: zombified Oz confronts the crew on the burning carrier and vanishes through a collapsing floor, and the four escape in an emergency pod. Lennox picks up closed Atlas chatter about a black site, and the crew lands on the Trident Retreat, which Oz has already infiltrated. Oz narrates the whole intro.

Enemies

Zombies and their variants

The regular zombies come with the Chargers, EMZs, Exploders, Spikers, Blinkers, Meatbags and Hosts of the earlier maps.

Fused Zombies

New in Descent: zombies that combine two kinds at once. Purple Blinkers carry the spikes of the Spikers, orange Blinkers explode like the Exploders, Meatbags carry the shock of the EMZs, and blue Spikers do too.

Security Dogs and contamination rounds

The special rounds of Exo Zombies come back here from time to time.

The boss

Oz himself, fought twice in his arena, at rounds 13 and 20.

Oz and his two battles

Exo upgrades

Exo upgrades are the perks of Exo Zombies. Each one is sold at a power generator in its area.

KL03-Trident

The new energy weapon of the map, from the 3D Printer. Its bolts bounce off the walls and hit zombies several times.

Blunderbuss

A single-shot muzzle-loading shotgun from the 3D Printer, devastating up close and very slow to reload.

XS1 Goliath

A mechanized suit that falls in Orbital Care Packages, with a chain gun, rockets and homing missiles, for a limited time.

The wall weapons are the Bulldog, the MK14, the MP11, the AMR9, the HBRa3 and the Tac-19. The 3D Printer costs 1,000 points and moves between five spots; Upgrade Stations raise a weapon one Mk at a time for 2,500 points.

Main quest: Reunion

Zombies climbing over a railing at the Trident Retreat, Reunion achievement art, Descent, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Zombies

Oz’s challenges

The main quest, Reunion, is a series of twelve steps set by Oz: valves and a terminal in the Tidal Generator, a Goliath walk on the seabed, a drone hunt, a capacitor charged by EMZs, and rounds with grenades only, rockets only, friendly fire or points lost with every step.

Oz’s memory

The last step sends the crew into Oz’s memory of the courtyard of Outbreak, where one player plays as Oz.

The reward

The Reunion achievement, the experimental Upgrade Station that takes a weapon to Mk 25, and the Double Feature mode.

Secrets

Rows of pods holding clones of Oz in a hidden room, end cinematic, Descent, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Zombies

The clones

After the end cinematic of the second battle, a hidden room under the facility shows thousands of pods, each holding a clone of Oz, and one of them opens his eyes.

Music

Three manta ray toys play the Dies Irae and the Tuba Mirum of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem: one in the elevator shaft that drops to the Concierge, one in a broken display case by the entrance of the Great Hall from the Galleria, and one on top of the teleporter of the Tidal Generator.

The trophy table

A table with seven trophy slots at the reception desk. Each slot rewards a challenge of the four Exo Zombies maps: a silver and a golden bus for Outbreak, a golden burger for Infection, a silver and a golden shark for Carrier, a silver and a golden trident for Descent.

Achievements

Descent has ten achievements and trophies, from Smooth Operator for the first victory over Oz to Double Tap for the last one. One of them is a First Room on its own: Nah, I’m good, round 7 without anyone opening a door.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map mp_zombie_h2o.
  • The map borrows elements from the campaign missions Utopia and Induction and from the multiplayer map Retreat.
  • On Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 the Blunderbuss is not in the 3D Printer, and the Big Game achievement asks for a kill on Oz with the Lynx instead.
  • Like the Supremacy pack before it, Reckoning brought no bonus multiplayer weapon.
  • The end cinematic, unlocked by killing the mutated Oz, plays “Take Me Outta Here” by Kerim Gunes while Oz tells what became of each member of the crew.
  • Oz is played by John Malkovich. One of his random lines, about flipping the bird to an Atlas satellite, recalls his character in the film Red.
