Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is Sledgehammer Games’ war of 2054, fought in exoskeletons. Its Zombies mode, Exo Zombies, was made by Raven Software with Sledgehammer and tells its own story: Atlas, the private military company of the campaign, drops the Manticore bioweapon on a prison riot, the dead come back, and Atlas takes some of them to a hidden lab to study them. When they break out, four employees are left to survive: Oz, Lilith, Decker and Kahn, played by John Malkovich, Rose McGowan, Jon Bernthal and Bill Paxton.

The game launched without the mode. Each of the four DLC packs of 2015 brought one Exo Zombies map, first on Xbox and about a month later on PlayStation and PC: Outbreak, Infection, Carrier and Descent. From Carrier on, Captain Lennox of the Sentinel Task Force, played by Bruce Campbell, takes Oz’s place. All four maps have their First Room here, and Carrier, with its two starting sides, has three boards.

The First Room in Advanced Warfare

A run stays in the starting area: no door is opened and every round is played in full. On every Exo Zombies map the Exo Suits wait behind those doors. Exo Medic is the exception among the Exo Upgrades: it can be bought without a suit.

Doors closed

No door is opened, and every round is played in full.

MK14 and Bulldog

Every starting area has these two wall weapons, 500 points each, except Carrier, where each side has one of them.

Carrier

The MK14 side and the Bulldog side are ranked apart, in solo and at two players, and Mixed ranks teams from two to four players.

S1X allowed

On PC, the S1X community client is accepted.

Current generation only

Runs on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are not accepted.

No glitch

No glitch or exploit is allowed on any of the four maps.

What Exo Zombies brings

Exo Suits

Found on each map, they give the boost jumps, a stronger melee and access to the Exo Upgrades.

Exo Upgrades

The perks of the mode, Exo Medic, Exo Health, Exo Slam, Exo Soldier, Exo Reload and, from Carrier, Exo Stockpile.

3D Printers

Wall weapons are holograms printed on the spot, and a roaming 3D Printer, 1,000 points a use, takes the part of the Mystery Box.

Upgrade Station

2,500 points a level, it raises a weapon up to Mk 20, and up to Mk 25 once the map’s quest is done.

Hosts and infection

A Host’s hit infects, and a player has 60 seconds to reach a Decontamination Zone before turning.

Exo Zombies

The zombies wear exoskeletons too, and new kinds join them on each map, from the EMZ that shuts a suit down to the Blinker that teleports.

The maps

Outbreak

(January 27, 2015 on Xbox, Havoc): a secret Atlas research facility overrun by its own test subjects. The game starts in the Courtyard, around a bus.

Infection

(March 31, 2015 on Xbox, Ascendance): an Atlas command post around a Burger Town, a gas station and the sewers. The game starts in the Hoard More store.

Carrier

(June 2, 2015 on Xbox, Supremacy): an Atlas super-carrier in the Pacific. The team starts split between the Hangar and the Gun Deck.

Descent

(August 4, 2015 on Xbox, Reckoning): the Trident Retreat, an Atlas resort under the ocean, and the end of the story. The game starts on the Landing, outside the resort.

Trivia

  • A First Room in the trophy list. On Descent, the Nah, I’m good achievement asks for round 7 without anyone opening a door.
  • A bonus wave first. Before Outbreak, the zombies appeared in a bonus wave of Exo Survival on the map Riot, the story’s real starting point.
  • An old chain. The Burger Town of Infection is the fast-food chain first seen in Modern Warfare 2.
  • Double Feature. Finishing Descent’s quest unlocks a black-and-white hardcore mode, started from a keypad in the spawn.
