The First Room

The spawn point inside the military tent, in black and white, with a boarded window and a ray machine on a table, Attack of the Radioactive Thing, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Attack of the Radioactive Thing is the military tent where the four actors are teleported at the start of every game, the decontamination camp of the army at the edge of Sonova Beach. Like the rest of the film, it is in black and white. The tent is a round main room with canvas corridors around it, lined with crates, beds, barrels and lockers, and a sign in one corridor reads «Decon Zone». Every player starts with 500 points, a Kendall 44 pistol and grenades.

The exits of the tent are round decontamination tunnels crossed with «Quarantine» tape. Each one is opened for 750 points: the one by Up ‘N Atoms leads out to the Diner side and to the playground under the drive-in screen, the other towards the entrance of the drive-in theatre. In a First Room game they stay closed, so the power, the perks of the town, the Magic Wheel and the Pack-a-Punch all stay out of reach.

Those are the two weapons of the tent, on top of the starting Kendall 44. Buying ammo for the Hornet costs half its price, 375 points. The zombies climb in through the boarded windows of the tent.

Up ‘N Atoms

500 points in solo, 1,500 with other players, by the hospital beds of the tent. It is the only perk machine in the First Room.

The windows

Boarded windows open on the parked cars outside. Zombies tear the planks off to climb in, and the players can board them up again.

The Decon Zone

A sign in a corridor of the tent marks the decontamination zone, among ladders, crates and lockers.

The ray machine on its table under a window of the tent, Attack of the Radioactive Thing, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare Zombies

The ray machine

A large ray machine stands on a table under a window. It is the life ray of the main quest, which brings a dead body back to life.

The Hornet crates

The Hornet is drawn in chalk on a stack of crates and barrels in the main room, across from a boarded window.

Lost and Found

A cardboard box in the tent. It gives back the weapons of a player who bled out, for 2,000 points, or for free in solo.

Crog scenes

Crog-Zilla fires eggs at the players, and each egg hatches a Crog, a fast frog-like mutant that lunges. Shooting the eggs before they hatch cuts down the number of Crogs, but if every egg of a Crog scene is shot, no Max Ammo drops.

Crog Brutes

From about scene 12, the bigger Crog Brutes join the zombies. They charge, blind the players with the light of their lure and burrow under the ground.

The Attack of the Radioactive Thing leaderboard has two categories, each with a board for solo and one for two players: Fate Cards, the reference, and Fate & Fortune Cards. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door or barrier.

Fate Cards

Only the Fate Cards may be used, and Irish Luck is not allowed. In the Fate & Fortune Cards category, any card may be used.

Banned in both categories

Director’s Cut, one-window strategies, and glitches and exploits.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full. Binding the shoot button to the scroll wheel or to several keys is allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded, with a clear proof of the category: the pregame lobby, the lobby after the match or the pause screen. A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public.

Overview

Attack of the Radioactive Thing is the fourth Zombies map of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, released with Absolution, the third DLC pack of the game. It is set in Sonova Beach, a fictional beach town in California, in a black-and-white creature feature of the 1950s: nuclear tests have covered parts of the town in radioactive blobs, and a giant monster, Crog-Zilla, waits off the shore. The official description presents it as a «Creature Feature-inspired Zombies co-op experience», set «in a small 1950s beach town». The other maps of the game are in the book of Infinite Warfare.

The film

The title card of the movie, «Willard Wyler’s Attack of the Radioactive Thing!», hosted by Elvira.

The intro opens on Elvira, lying on a red couch in a gothic house. Willard Wyler offered her a part in one of his films and meant it literally: she has been trapped in this «black-and-white hellhole» ever since, as the hostess of the movie. She has rewritten the script, to give «little Willy some unpleasant dreams». She snaps her fingers, the television turns on, and the four actors are teleported into a military tent in their 1950s costumes. «Who the hell turned off all the color?» asks A.J.

Characters

The four actors of Infinite Warfare Zombies, cast in the roles of a 1950s monster movie:

A

Andre Wright

Voiced by Jay Pharoah. He is the one who pulls the piece of the Soul Key out of Crog-Zilla in the ending.

P

Poindexter Zittermann

Voiced by Seth Green, as «The Scientist», in a white lab coat, a loose brown tie and glasses.

S

Sally Simpson

Voiced by Sasheer Zamata, as «The School Girl», in a blue nylon jacket and a matching ascot.

A

A.J. Jordaniels

Voiced by Ike Barinholtz, as a 1950s greaser, with a leather jacket and slicked-back hair.

Elvira

Cassandra Peterson as her horror hostess, trapped in the film by Wyler. She takes over from Wyler as the announcer, hands over the vial that leads to the Pack-a-Punch, and becomes playable once the main quest has been completed.

W

Willard Wyler

The director of the films, who scolds Elvira for stealing his role of announcer and sometimes threatens to send her to Nightfall, a map of Extinction.

Enemies

Zombies

The townspeople and soldiers of Sonova Beach. Some of them glow green: only those fill the vial of Elvira.

Crog Brutes

Taller, dark grey Crogs with a lure on their head, from about scene 12. They charge with both claws forward, blind and deafen the players with a flash of their lure, and burrow underground to burst out next to a player. Like the Crogs, they have a weak spot on their back.

Crog-Zilla

The Radioactive Thing itself, a giant Crog off the shore, seen attacking a cargo ship. It cannot be hurt before the end of the main quest: it only sends the Crogs and Crog Brutes.

Crogs

Frog-like mutants hatched from the eggs that Crog-Zilla fires at the players during their own scenes. They run fast and lunge, a dodged lunge leaves them stunned, and they leave a puddle of acid when they die. Explosives and the Modular Atomic Disintegrator deal them more damage.

Modular Atomic Disintegrator

The wonder weapon of the map, the M.A.D., from the Magic Wheel. Three free parts hidden behind panels, opened with the Crowbar, add a charged shot, full-auto fire and the power to refill its ammo from the radioactive eggs.

Melee weapons

The Cleaver, stuck in a dead shark in the Beachside Market, and the Crowbar, in a small room of the motel behind Bombstoppers. Both kill in one hit until round 8.

Buildables

The Seismic Wave Generator, the Violet Ray device, the Hypnosis device and the Mind Control device, built on the workbenches of the map.

Every weapon, the M.A.D. and the buildables

Elvira and the Pack-a-Punch

The Pack-a-Punch is a film projector in the Projection Room, reached by a portal. To open it, the players turn on the power with a handle found on the beach, bring Elvira her spell book from the Diner, fill the vial she gives them with the Cleaver and lead her to a portal. A second, optional quest installs the Alien Fuses for the double Pack-a-Punch, at 10,000 points.

Easter egg

The main quest, Soul-Less, is the hunt for the fourth piece of the Soul Key, which Crog-Zilla carries in the sac of its antenna. The players rebuild a zombie and turn it into a key, cook an explosive compound in the garage of the gas station, assemble a nuclear bomb, set the colour of the film, then escort the bomb to the beach and fight Crog-Zilla with the Death Ray cannons before entering its belly to type the nuclear codes.

The ending

The bomb goes off inside Crog-Zilla, its pieces rain on the beach, and Andre pulls the Soul Key out of the antenna before a portal takes the actors to a spaceship. «To be continued», laughs Wyler.

Soul-Less, step by step

Secrets

Skullhop

The arcade machine of the Diner. Six hidden skulls unlock it, and finishing its game gives every perk for the rest of the match, Up ‘N Atoms excepted in solo.

Wyler’s diary

His personal recordings, heard at a book by the pool of the motel, where he talks about his life.

Elvira as a player

After Soul-Less, the code Down, Right, Down, Left, Up, Right in the pregame lobby lets a player use Elvira.

Achievements

The map has eight achievements and trophies: Soul-Less, Unpleasant Dreams, Mistress of the Dark, Quarter Muncher, Bait and Switch, Belly of the Beast, MAD Proto and Dear Diary, worth 200 Gamerscore in all.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map cp_town.
  • The name of Sonova Beach is a play on «son of a bitch», as A.J. points out.
  • Elvira replaces Willard Wyler as the announcer, and Wyler sometimes threatens to send her to Nightfall, an Extinction map.
  • In the TV studio, across from the couch of Elvira, film reels carry the names of Extinction maps, drawn at random each game. Their order gives the typewriter code of the main quest.
  • A huge sign by the motel reads «Cinema Drive-in The Beast From Beyond», the title of the next map.
  • On the motel side of the bridge, a road sign gives the distance between Sonova Beach and the Bear Lake campgrounds of Rave in the Redwoods.
  • When Poindexter starts to talk in the outro, the menu music of Extinction from Call of Duty: Ghosts plays.
  • Crog-Zilla magazines, «Unexplained Science», later turned up in Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III and Black Ops 6.
