The First Room

The Conference Room at the start of a game, its long table under the seal of the Pentagon and the DEFCON 1 sign, Classified, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Classified is the Conference Room of the Pentagon, on the office floor at the top of the building, where the Ultimis crew spawns at the start of every game, together with the Side Passage, the hallway that opens off it without a door. It is the room of Five, rebuilt: the long conference table, the seal of the Pentagon above it, flags and portraits of presidents on the walls, and a sign that reads DEFCON 1. The players start with 500 points, a knife and the starting weapon and equipment of their loadout, the Welling revolver by default.

From the Conference Room, a door of 500 points opens on the Deserted Hallway, where the elevator down to the War Room stands. In a First Room game it stays closed, and the Pentagon Announcer reminds the players from the first seconds that the power is down: “Power level critical. Major systems offline.”

Strife

500 points, a pistol on a wall of the Side Passage.

Those are the only two wall buys in reach. Zombies climb in through boarded windows and broken walls in both the Conference Room and the Side Passage.

The wall of screens

A bank of monitors in the Conference Room shows black-and-white aerial photographs.

The electric trap

The metal detector gates of the Side Passage are one of the two Electro-Shock Defenses of the map. The trap is missing a part found two floors down and needs the power, so it stays off for the whole game.

No perk

None of the four machines of the map, Brew, Cola, Soda and Tonic, stands in the Conference Room or the Side Passage. A First Room game is played without any of the four perks of the loadout.

No Mystery Box

It starts either in the Main Offices or on the upper level of the War Room, both out of reach.

No power

The switch is in the Laboratories, at the bottom of the building. Without it, the teleporters, the traps and the DEFCON switches never wake up, and the Pack-a-Punch at Groom Lake stays out of reach.

The podium memo

A memo of October 31, 1963 lies on one of the podiums of the room. It reports that the outbreak of October 18 in the Pentagon was “a lapse of reason by one of our own”.

The Classified leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. Its reference category is Purist; seven more categories, from No Elixirs to Realistic All Elixirs, sit beside it in three groups, Normal, Hardcore and Realistic. The Purist rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door or barrier.

Hardcore

The game is played on Hardcore difficulty, and custom mutations are not allowed.

No elixirs or talismans

None may be used. The elixir loadout shown in the lobby is fixed: Aftertaste, Point Drops, Anti Entrapment, Newtonian Negation, Quacknarok and Arsenal Accelerator for the classics, Conflagration Liquidation, Who’s Keeping Score, Extra Credit and Dividend Yield for the megas.

Loadout

The starting weapon is the Welling, a wall weapon of the room, the Strife or the Essex Model 07, or the MOG 12. Only Frag Grenades and Acid Bombs, and no special weapon.

Full rounds

Every round is played in full, without glitches or exploits. Nothing may be injected into the game except fast restarts; duplicating weapons and going down on purpose are not allowed.

Players

Split-screen is allowed, bots are not.

Video

The whole game is recorded, with the pregame lobby and every player’s loadout. The health, the points, the round counter and the top right of the screen are never covered. The Project-BO4 client is allowed.

Where to post it

Overview

Classified is a Zombies map of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, a reimagining of Five from Call of Duty: Black Ops. It came with the Black Ops Pass as a day-one bonus, and was later sold on its own. The layout of Five is kept almost unchanged, with new rooms added: Central Filing and the Main Offices on the office floor, and the Server Room off the War Room. The mission briefing quotes John F. Kennedy: “Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.”

The intro picks up on Shangri-La. As the Ultimis crew tries to teleport to Groom Lake to carry on Richtofen’s plan, Dempsey fires the 31-79 JGb215 and overloads the teleporter, which throws the four of them through space and time to the Pentagon of 1963. At the same time, Samantha Maxis, trapped on the Moon, sends Yuri Zavoyski to the Pentagon, where he starts the outbreak. The crew builds a way to Groom Lake, finds the base nearly abandoned and, from there, goes on to the events of Moon.

Characters

The four playable characters are the Ultimis crew, the original versions of the heroes, in place of Kennedy, McNamara, Nixon and Castro in Five.

Enemies

Nova 6 Crawlers

The gas-filled crawlers of Five. They are no longer kept to the Laboratories and can spawn on the other floors. A blueprint found in the Pentagon hints that American scientists made them again.

Zombies

The staff and soldiers of the Pentagon, turned in the outbreak.

Hellhounds

They take the place of the Pentagon Thief of Five, who does not appear on this map. They come on rounds of their own and can also turn up among the zombies.

Perks

As on every Black Ops 4 map, each player picks four perks before the game, and the map has four machines, Brew, Cola, Soda and Tonic, one for each slot of the loadout. Only the Tonic machine adds the modifier of its perk, once a player owns all four.

Brew

In the Main Offices of the office floor.

Cola

In the War Room.

Soda

In the Laboratories, in front of the room of the power switch.

Tonic

The fourth machine, the one that adds the modifier.

Weapons

Seventeen weapons are sold on the walls, from the Strife and the Essex Model 07 at 500 points in the First Room to the Koshka at 4500 in Weapon Testing. The Mystery Box costs 950 points.

Winter’s Howl

The wonder weapon of Five returns, from the Mystery Box or for free at the end of Cold War Remedy. It slows and freezes the zombies; Pack-a-Punched, it becomes the Winter’s Fury.

DEFCON and the Pack-a-Punch

At first, two elevators at 500 points a ride link the three floors. The power, in the Laboratories, wakes the teleporters of every floor and the four DEFCON switches of the War Room. At DEFCON 5, the large teleporter of the War Room leads to the Panic Room. Unlike Five, the Pack-a-Punch is not there but at Groom Lake: the players build the Teleporter Signal Amplifier from three parts, place it on the small teleporter of the War Room and raise the DEFCON level again.

Easter egg: Cold War Remedy

Classified has no main quest: its ending cutscene plays on its own once the players complete round 150. Its one quest, Cold War Remedy, tracks down Project Skadi, the prototype of the Winter’s Howl, through four aerial photographs of Shi No Numa, Der Riese, Kino der Toten and Shangri-La hidden around the Pentagon. Their numbers, entered in the War Room, send the players back to Groom Lake for the weapon.

The reward

A free Winter’s Howl, in a briefcase marked “PROJECT SKADI”, and the achievement Cold War Remedy for the player who takes it.

Achievements

Classified has ten achievements and trophies, nine bronze and one silver, Cold War Remedy. Two of them, Power Struggle and The Highest Office, ask for round 20 without turning on the power and without using an elevator: a First Room game that reaches round 20 meets the conditions of both.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zm_office.
  • Although the Pentagon is in a far worse state than in Five, Classified takes place before it, in November 1963.
  • The memo on the podium of the Conference Room announces that an important guest is coming to meet the Secretary of Defense and the President, a nod to the meeting of Kennedy and Castro in Five.
  • Screens and documents in the War Room show Verrückt, Shi No Numa, Der Riese, Kino der Toten, Ascension and Shangri-La, as if the Pentagon had been watching the Ultimis crew, along with pictures of Samantha in the device on the Moon.
  • Unlike in Five, the windows of the Laboratories stay shut once the power is on, so the players can no longer jump through them.
  • The ending cutscene takes place after Moon: the Ultimis crew sits in a cell of Hangar 4 at Groom Lake when the Primis crew comes to get them.
  • Richtofen got his body back after his zombified self met it in the hangar, at the end of his mission with his Primis version told in the comic Call of Duty: Zombies.
