The First Room

The Docks at dusk, with the lighthouse and the ice-bound shore behind the frozen water, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Tag der Toten is the Docks, the frozen wharf where the Victis crew comes out of the portal at the start of every game. It is a new area: in Call of the Dead the game started on the beach, and the Docks, behind the Boathouse, could not be reached. From the wharf the players see the whole bay, with the lighthouse on its rock and the ship stuck in the ice.

Two ways lead out of the Docks, both sold for 750 points: a door into the Boathouse and a pile of debris towards the Frozen Crevasse. In a First Room game both stay closed. The weapons sold on the wharf:

Strife pistol, menu icon, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Strife

500 points, the semi-automatic pistol of Black Ops 4, on a wall of the Docks.

Essex Model 07 lever-action rifle, menu icon, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Essex Model 07

500 points, a lever-action rifle, on a wall of the Docks.

Those are the only wall buys of the Docks. The starting weapon is chosen in the loadout before the game; the ZFRR board only allows the Welling revolver or one of these two guns.

The frozen water of the Docks between the wooden walkways, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Freezing water

The water of the Docks is below freezing. A player who wades in slows down, ice covers the screen, and staying too long freezes them solid, until they break free with melee attacks. The Docks is one of the ten stretches of freezing water of the map.

A snowball, render, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Snowballs

A pile of snowballs lies in front of the door. A pile gives six snowballs in the equipment slot; they kill in the early rounds and freeze the zombies later on.

A power switch

The Docks has the first of the three power switches of the map, on a generator at the edge of the wharf. It is one of the two switches needed for the Pack-a-Punch, but the rest of the quest lies behind the doors.

A shield part

The base of the Riot Shield waits at one of three spots of the Docks, but both crafting tables, in the Lighthouse Station and in Specimen Storage, are behind the doors.

The zipline

A zipline leaves the Docks for the top of the lighthouse. It stays out of use until the Hermit gives the players a Zipline Handle, which a First Room game never reaches.

No perk, no Mystery Box

None of the four perk altars and none of the eight Mystery Box spots of the map are on the Docks.

Special enemies

Hellhounds come on their own rounds, and burning Napalm Zombies and Electrified Zombies spawn among the horde.

The Tag der Toten leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. Its reference category is Purist, played on custom mutations. Seven more categories sit beside it: No Elixirs, Classic Elixirs and All Elixirs on Normal difficulty, Classic and All Elixirs on Hardcore, and Classic and All Elixirs on Realistic, none of them with custom mutations. The Purist rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door or barrier.

Custom mutations

The game starts at round 5, doors and power doors are closed, the zombies never move slower than a super sprint, vermin spawn twice as often, and the players start with one bar of health less.

No elixir, no talisman

Both are disabled in the mutations and may not be used.

Starting weapon

The Welling revolver, or a gun sold on the walls of the room: the Strife or the Essex Model 07.

Lethals

Frag Grenades and Acid Bombs only.

No special weapon

Special weapons are disabled and may not be used.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Fair play

Nothing may be injected into the game except fast restarts, and the Project-BO4 client is allowed. Split-screen is allowed, bots are not. Duplicating weapons and going down on purpose to be revived for ammo or to charge a specialist are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded and every mutation must be shown, with the pregame lobby and the loadout of every player. The health, the points, the round counter and the top right of the screen are never covered. A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Overview

Tag der Toten, German for “Day of the Dead”, is the eighth and last Zombies map of Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and the final map of the Aether story, which began with Nacht der Untoten in World at War. It is a reimagining of Call of the Dead: the lighthouse, the ship stuck in the ice and the frozen shore return, with new areas around them and a Group 935 facility on the mountain above. The mission briefing: “The Paradox Must Be Resolved…”

The intro opens in Richtofen’s laboratory under Alcatraz, where the Victis crew wakes up in cryopods. Stuhlinger hears a voice in his head, the zombies pour into the lab, and a portal takes the four of them away. Primis and Ultimis need one last piece for Nikolai’s plan, the Agarthan Device, and it waits in the pocket dimension where Pablo Marinus, a test subject of Group 935, has been trapped for years. He lives at the top of the lighthouse as the Hermit, and he guides the crew without ever showing himself.

Tag der Toten has three power switches, on the Docks, on the bridge of the ship and in the facility. Ziplines and Flingers carry the players across the bay once the Hermit has repaired them, and the Pack-a-Punch moves with the beam of the lighthouse, as it did in Call of the Dead.

Samantha’s Music Box

A lethal that opens a portal: Samantha lifts the zombies around it and throws them away. It comes out of the Vault in Human Infusion.

Golden Snowballs

They replace every snowball of the map and kill in one hit, a reward of the Hermit.

The Ray Gun, the Ray Gun Mark II, the Matryoshka Doll and the Monkey Bomb are also in the Mystery Box.

The wonder weapons and their quests

Power and Pack-a-Punch

The power is split between three switches: the Docks, the Bridge at the top of the ship, and Human Infusion in the facility, which is reached by zipline. The Pack-a-Punch needs the first two and a blue rock taken to the Hermit. As in Call of the Dead, it then moves from spot to spot, wherever the lighthouse beam points: the Beach, the Lagoon, the Sunken Path or the Boathouse.

The Golden Pack-a-Punch Machine on its iceberg, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Golden Pack-a-Punch

On an iceberg out in the bay, reached with the Flinger of the Sun Deck once the third switch is on. It upgrades a weapon to its maximum in one go for 5000 points.

Ziplines

Broken at the start. Two cranks repair the first two, and the Hermit then gives the Zipline Handle that opens four more, among them the one of the Docks.

Flingers

Three in all: the one of Call of the Dead, a new one on the Sun Deck and one on the balcony of the facility. The Hermit repairs their gearboxes.

The three power switches, the Pack-a-Punch and the Golden Pack-a-Punch

The Hermit and the Challenge Totems

The Hermit speaks from the top of the lighthouse, Level 4, and lowers a pulley to trade with the players: he repairs gearboxes, hands out keys and rewards, and guides the main quest. Around the map, five Challenge Totems each set three trials, always the same from game to game, rewarded with power-ups, Self-Revive, armor, half-price traps or more snowballs.

Frozen Crevasse

Kill in freezing water, shatter frozen zombies, ring the bells of the Docks.

Lighthouse Station

Headshots, shield bashes, and jars to empty in the sea.

Beach

Snowball kills, the lighthouse traps, and the S.O.S. signs.

Forecastle

Kills standing still, melee kills, and a soup to cook.

Specimen Storage

Flinger kills, zipline kills, and a whack-a-mole with snowballs.

Easter egg: Salvation Lies Above

The main quest of the map and the end of the Aether story. Victis builds the Agarthan Device for Nikolai, out of the Apothicon Blood held on the ship, the Vril Vessel and the Elemental Shard. It needs at least two completed totems, the Golden Pack-a-Punch Flinger, the Wunderwaffe DG-Scharfschütze, Samantha’s Music Box and every Dynamite barricade.

The Apothicon Blood flaring red in Artifact Storage, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

The Apothicon Blood

It rests in Artifact Storage and demands three offerings before it speaks of the Seal of Duality.

The bay transformed, with the water turned to lava, during the escort, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

The escort

The Seal of Duality turns the water to lava and floats to Human Infusion inside a red shield the players must stay in.

Samantha and Eddie walking hand in hand towards the light, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

The ending

The Hermit, now Pablo Marinus, goes back to the Great War, and a final cinematic closes the story. The player then walks Samantha and Eddie into the light.

Salvation Lies Above, step by step

Secrets

George A. Romero's glasses on a table in the Lighthouse Station, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Romero’s glasses

A pair of glasses on a table in the Lighthouse Station gives 500 points, and the character pays tribute to George A. Romero.

The planet Mars filling the sky above the secret area, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Mars

A hidden spot of the facility Flinger throws the players to a secret area with Mars in the sky and the loading music of Shangri-La.

The Margwa jumpscare, a mouth full of teeth, Tag der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Two jumpscares

A Margwa behind a note on the Forecastle, and the face of the Hermit when the lighthouse beam crosses a sniper scope.

A Light from the Shore

A sickle in the Ice Grotto, a machete at the end of the Hidden Path and a pitchfork on the Loading Platform, the weapons of the Call of the Dead intro, play a song by Kevin Sherwood, James McCawley and Teemu Mäntysaari.

Reflections

A second song, played by interacting three times with the metal door that held the Ultimis crew in Call of the Dead.

The free perk

Once the Golden Pack-a-Punch is reached, five wooden figurines wait at the Pack-a-Punch spots. Placed in a suitcase on the Beach, they bring a wave of Electrified Zombies, then a free perk.

Freeze Mode

After a player has frozen solid in each of the ten stretches of water, a button appears on the Docks. It locks everyone in the spawn, makes them freeze unless they sprint, and sends the game to round 200 at the end of the round.

Freeze Mode starts on the Docks, but the ten stretches of water lie behind the doors, so it cannot be set up in a First Room game; the No Elixirs category of the ZFRR leaderboard forbids it outright.

Achievements

Tag der Toten has ten achievements and trophies of its own: Salvation Lies Above, the main quest, for 30 Gamerscore and a silver trophy, and nine others for 15 Gamerscore and a bronze trophy each, from freezing ten zombies at once to finding the secret.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zm_orange.
  • The name is a nod to Day of the Dead, the 1985 film by George A. Romero, who played himself in Call of the Dead.
  • The ship stuck in the ice is the Tugarin, named after an evil creature of Russian folklore; it carried the blood of an Apothicon Elder God.
  • The note of the Margwa jumpscare, “Margwa can’t hurt you, Margwa isn’t real”, plays on an internet meme.
  • Treyarch hinted at Freeze Mode on January 15, 2020, nearly four months after the release; it was solved two weeks later.
  • In the intro, Misty and Marlton leave the cryopods in the opposite order to the one seen in Blood of the Dead.
