The First Room

The Staging Area at night, a wet lot with army trucks under the storm and the pyramid of the facility behind, Forsaken, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Forsaken is the Staging Area, the fenced lot outside the Omega complex where the Requiem strike team lands at the start of every game. It is a wide yard of wet asphalt crowded with army trucks, containers and crates, with sheds, a garage and a flight of stairs along its sides, under a storm that spins above the pyramid of the facility. The power of the facility is already on, so every machine of the room works from round one. Each player starts with the weapon of their loadout.

The room has no door. Its only way out is the teleporter at the back of the yard. And it does not play like any other First Room: until the team teleports out, the zombies keep coming without waiting for the horde to be cleared, and the rounds roll over on their own, much faster than usual. Guides compare it to No Man’s Land on Moon. Leaving does not reset anything either: the zombies still alive follow the team into the next rounds.

Diamatti

750 Essence, a burst-fire pistol, Uncommon, the second wall buy of the room.

Those are the only two wall buys of the room. Like every wall weapon of the map, they can rise one rarity tier at the end of every fifth round, so they are worth checking again later in the game.

Death Perception

The only Perk-a-Cola of the room, with a machine of its own in the northeast corner, next to the Rampage Inducer. Forsaken is the one map where it is not only sold by Der Wunderfizz. It shows the outlines of the enemies behind the trucks and containers, and at Tier III it brings 20% more Salvage. Like every perk of the game, it costs 2,500 Essence as a first perk, 500 more for each perk already owned.

The console of the teleporter, with a green screen and a red keyboard, in the Staging Area, Forsaken, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies

The teleporter

The only way out. Its console says “Teleporter: Activate”, with no price. Once it is turned on, the team holds out for 30 seconds while it powers up, then goes through to the Checkpoint. A First Room game never touches it.

Arsenal

Armor and weapon rarity, paid in Salvage: a first armor plate costs 500 Salvage, the second 1,000 and the third 250 High-End Salvage, and broken armor can be repaired at the same machine.

Crafting Table

Lethal and tactical equipment and Support, paid in Salvage. Season Six added the Hand Cannon and the ARC-XD to its Support. Support is forbidden on the No Support board.

Rampage Inducer

A canister of Aetherium next to Death Perception. Turned on, it makes the zombies spawn faster and move faster until a set round, then switches itself off. On this map it adds speed to a room that is already fast.

A crystal of the quest

One of the three giant Aetherium Crystals of Pyrrhic Victory grows in the Staging Area, but only after the first step of the quest, in the Observation Tower. A First Room game never sees it.

Special enemies

The specials do not wait for the team to leave. Players who stay in the Staging Area deal with Abominations, Manglers, Mimics and Tormentors there.

The Mystery Box

One of its listed spots is in the Staging Area, but players who play the room for hours report that they have never seen it there. Do not count on it.

Round 935

The highest round the game counts. It has been reached in the Staging Area, with Support, in games that lasted well over a hundred hours.

The Forsaken leaderboard has two categories, each with boards for solo and for two, three and four players: No Support, the reference, and With Support. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door, and play every round in full. In the Staging Area, that means never using the teleporter.

Support

Not allowed on the No Support board: no Sentry Turret, Chopper Gunner, War Machine or any other scorestreak. The With Support board allows every one of them.

Outbreak range

Loading into Outbreak first to get the extended interaction range is allowed on both boards.

No glitches

Glitches and exploits are not allowed, and duplicating a Wonder Weapon is not allowed either.

Video

The whole game is recorded, the health, the points and the round counter are never covered and the game audio must be heard. On the No Support board, co-op games need the point of view of every player.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted. A run whose video goes offline or private leaves the board.

The rounds of Black Ops Cold War have their own article: zombie health stops growing at round 55 in this game, which changes how a high round on this board compares to the older games.

Overview

Forsaken is the fourth and last round-based Zombies map of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, by Treyarch, and the end of the story the game began in Die Maschine. The Requiem strike team teleports into the heart of Omega Group’s operations, a Soviet test site in Ukraine, to find Sergeant Kazimir Zykov before Colonel Lev Kravchenko does. The mission briefing: “A secluded facility harboring a secretive operation. A colonel determined to achieve his mission no matter the cost.”

The facility had been shut down after an incident in 1981 and handed over to Omega Group, which repurposed it. Part of the site is Anytown, a mock American downtown with a cinema, a video store, an arcade and a Burger Town. Season Six also brought PhD Slider, the return of PhD Flopper, to every map of the game, a machine of its own for Death Perception on this map, the Chrysalax Wonder Weapon, and the Hand Cannon and ARC-XD at the Crafting Table.

Characters

Kazimir Zykov

The Soviet sergeant lost in the Dark Aether for forty years, whom both Requiem and Omega have come to find. When he finally walks out of a portal, he reveals that he is the Forsaken: “Forty Earth years. Four Dark Aether centuries.”

William Peck and Lev Kravchenko from behind, looking out at the Forsaken through a window, Forsaken, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies

Lev Kravchenko and William Peck

The colonel and the scientist who lead Omega Group, seen at the top of the Observation Tower. Peck built the machine that brought the Forsaken back.

Grigori Weaver

The head of Requiem, who guides the team by radio with Elizabeth Grey, Mackenzie Carver, Oskar Strauss and Captain Ravenov.

Areas

The map is a chain of teleporters. From the Staging Area, the team reaches the Checkpoint, then Main Street and its storage zones, Anytown West (the Video Store and Arcade, the Cinema, the TV Store) and Anytown East (Burger Town, the Bar, Fuel Processing). Fuel Processing leads to the Bunker Entrance, the Amplifier and the Particle Accelerator, and a last teleporter to the Observation Tower. Lifting the lockdown there opens more of the map, among it the Board Room of the bunker. The Town Square, behind the Phase, is only reached during the main quest.

The Cinema

In Anytown West, with posters for The Red Army, a wall buy and a way through the snack bar to Anytown East.

The Amplifier

The tunnel of the bunker that leads to the Particle Accelerator, where Omega bends the Dark Aether to its use.

Enemies

Forsaken gathers almost every enemy of the game: zombies, Armored Zombies, Heavy Zombies, Plaguehounds, Tormentors, Tempests, Mimics, Manglers, Disciples, Abominations and Krasny Soldats, and the Forsaken himself at the end of the main quest.

An Abomination with its three toothed heads, Forsaken trailer, Forsaken, Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War Zombies

Abomination

The three-headed Elite enemy that Forsaken introduced, first met at the last teleporter of the Amplifier, where one is sent at the team on the way to the Pack-a-Punch. The round does not change while it is alive. Its weak spots are its mouths when they open, glowing blue.

Tormentor

A special zombie of the Dark Aether that blows itself up. Killed by fire, it drops the Tempered Crystal Heart, a part of the Chrysalax.

Krasny Soldat

The heavily armored soldier only joins the fight during the battle against the Forsaken and the defense of Bubby.

Perks

The perks of Forsaken are powered from the start, and each one costs 2,500 Essence as a first perk, 500 more for each perk already owned, up to 7,000. There is no limit on how many a player can hold.

PhD Slider

New in Season Six and added to every map of the game: with enough Aetherium Crystals invested, a slide or a fall ends in an explosion of purple fire. Its machine stands in the Observation Tower, left of the zipline to the Burger Town rooftop.

Weapons

Forsaken has twenty wall buys, from the two pistols of the Staging Area to a Legendary FFAR 1 in the Town Square, and a Mystery Box that holds the Ray Gun and the Chrysalax. The Trials machine of the Observation Tower and the gold chests of the arcade can give Legendary weapons too. Four switches around the Bar call the Suspended Hind, a helicopter trap that fires on the street for 2,000 Essence.

Pack-a-Punch and the lockdown

The Pack-a-Punch Machine is the last stop of the chain, in the Observation Tower. On the way, the teleporter of Fuel Processing needs four repair parts hidden around Anytown, and the last teleporter of the Amplifier sends an Abomination. A red button in the tower then lifts the security lockdown that keeps some doors and rappels shut.

Chrysalax

Chrysalax

The Wonder Weapon of Forsaken, forged in the Dark Aether: a battle-axe, the Savager, that turns into a rapid-fire energy gun, the Storm. It is in the Mystery Box from the start, it can come out of the Trials, and it can be built from three crystals forged in the Particle Accelerator. Pack-a-Punched, it becomes the Tenebris.

Easter egg: Pyrrhic Victory

Pyrrhic Victory, the main quest of Forsaken, ends the story of Black Ops Cold War. A second button in the Observation Tower brings Zykov home, and he reveals himself as the Forsaken. The team then builds an Aetherium Neutralizer from three parts and three catalyzed crystals, escorts it through the Phase to the Town Square and fights the Forsaken with Samantha Maxis.

The ending

Samantha drags the Forsaken into a containment chamber and stays locked in the Dark Aether. Requiem is shut down, and the Director who orders it turns out to be Edward Richtofen.

Side quests

Forsaken has the most side quests of the game: an arcade with three mini-games and a hidden RC-XD race, a free Ray Gun from Ronald Reagan’s pizzas, the Aether Bunny of Bubby and the song Samantha’s Ballad, free drops by sliding off the rooftops with PhD Slider, and three sharpshooter challenges that raise the rarity of a weapon.

The arcade, Bubby, the pizzas and the other side quests

Achievements

Forsaken adds no achievement or trophy: the trophy list of Black Ops Cold War never received any for its later maps. Finishing Pyrrhic Victory gives the Pyrrhic Victory calling card.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zm_tungsten.
  • The front sign of the cinema in Anytown reads “Coming Soon Nacht der Untoten”, a nod to the first Zombies map, which can also be played in the arcade.
  • Kravchenko and Peck can be seen at the top of the Observation Tower, looking down on Anytown, before Pyrrhic Victory begins.
  • An Outbreak intel, the “Test Site Anna Report”, places the site in the east of Ukraine, near the Russian border; Forsaken puts it in the Zakarpatska Oblast, in the far west.
  • The ending cutscene plays “We’ll Meet Again” by Vera Lynn, and the monitor of the Director always shows Sebastian Vargas and Lawrence Sims as the strike team, whatever Operators were played.
  • A snow globe of Doctor Monty’s house in Agartha stands on the Director’s desk.
  • Five years after the ending, Peck turns up in Japan, scarred, asking a fisherman to take him out to sea to find “some old friends”.
  • The Napalm Strike is the one Support that the Crafting Tables of Forsaken do not sell.
