The First Room

The Receiving Bay of Griffin Station, the room where the teleporter from Area 51 lands, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Every game of Moon in Black Ops III starts on Earth, in Area 51, also called No Man’s Land. There are no rounds there: the zombies keep coming, stronger as the minutes pass, until every living player stands on the teleporter. It sends the crew to the Receiving Bay of Griffin Station, on the Moon, and that room is where the rounds of a First Room game are played. The time spent in Area 51 is part of the game.

Area 51 under a stormy sky, with its hangars, crates and debris, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Area 51

The spawn. The power is always on there, with the Pack-a-Punch Machine, a perk machine that is either Juggernog (2500 points) or Speed Cola (3000 points), in turn each time the players come back, and a GobbleGum machine near the teleporter. Hellhounds run with the zombies.

The teleporter

It only fires when all the players still alive stand on it. The record runs take what they can in Area 51 first: the 80-round solo run of Bitum, in 2022, leaves with its RK5 already Pack-a-Punched.

The Receiving Bay has no air and low gravity until the power is turned on, and the power switch is far behind the doors, in the room of the pyramid. A First Room game is therefore played in low gravity from the first round to the last, with the space suit on. The room has two doors, one on each side, sold for 750 points; buying one opens the other. Zombies climb in through two windows.

P.E.S.

The space suit stands in its locker right in front of the players when they arrive. Without it, a player in a room without air goes down. In Black Ops III the helmet covers the whole head.

An excavator terminal of the Receiving Bay, with an excavator at work on the lunar surface behind the window, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Excavator terminals

Three panels in the room stop the excavators when they are hacked. The Hacker lies in the Laboratories, behind the doors, so in a First Room game the excavators are never stopped.

An Astronaut Zombie walking in its space suit inside the station, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Astronaut Zombie

In Black Ops III it only spawns in the Receiving Bay, where in Black Ops it appeared near the player. Its grab takes a perk and throws the player somewhere else on the map, which is outside the First Room.

No wall buy

As in Black Ops, the starting room of Moon has none. The RK5 and the Sheiva, the 500-point walls that replace the Olympia and the M14, hang outside, past the doors.

Quick Revive

1500 points, or 500 in solo: the only perk machine of the room.

GobbleGum machine

One of the machines Zombies Chronicles added to the map stands in the room. The reference ZFRR board allows no gum at all, so it is only used on the Classic and Mega boards.

Mystery Box spot

One of the spots of the Box is in the room, next to Quick Revive.

The Moon (Black Ops III) leaderboard keeps boards for solo and for two, three and four players. It is kept apart from the Moon board of Black Ops: the room is the same, but the two games are not comparable. It has three categories: No GobbleGums, the reference board, then Classic GobbleGums and Mega GobbleGums. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door.

No GobbleGums

On the reference board, neither Classic nor Mega GobbleGums are allowed.

Classic GobbleGums

On this board, only Classic GobbleGums may be used.

Mega GobbleGums

On this board, at least one Mega GobbleGum is used. Flavor Hexed, Self Medication, Near Death Experience, Power Vacuum and Round Robbin are not allowed.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded, and each player shows their gum loadout before, during or after the game. On the reference board, a co-op player who does not show the lobby needs their own point of view.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Moon is one of the eight classic maps of Zombies Chronicles, the fifth map pack of Black Ops III, rebuilt in the engine and with the mechanics of Black Ops III. The pack is not part of the Season Pass. The story is the one of the original: the Ultimis crew travel from Area 51 to Griffin Station, a Group 935 base on the Moon, where Richtofen carries out his Grand Scheme and takes the place of Samantha in the pyramid. In the game files, the map is called zm_moon.

The original version, its rooms, its Hacker and its excavators are described in the book of Moon in Black Ops. This book only covers what the remaster changes.

What changed in Black Ops III

The Earth exploding in the black sky above the surface of the Moon, seen after the rockets of the Easter egg, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The end of the Earth

After the rockets of the Easter egg, the Earth breaks apart over several minutes and is entirely destroyed, where Black Ops only scorched its surface.

Weapons

The weapons of the Cold War are gone from the walls: Black Ops III weapons take their places, and the Mystery Box mixes them with a few old guns and the original Wonder Weapons. The Ray Gun Mark II, which never existed in Black Ops, is in the Box.

Perks

Widow’s Wine, 4000 points, replaces PhD Flopper, and Double Tap II replaces Double Tap Root Beer. Mule Kick stays where it was.

GobbleGums and Der Wunderfizz

GobbleGum machines and Der Wunderfizz were added to every Zombies Chronicles map. Since Zombies Chronicles, the first gum of a round is free.

Easter egg in solo

Richtofen’s Grand Scheme can be completed in solo and needs no other Easter egg first. In solo, the player is always Richtofen, so that the quest can be done alone.

Astronaut Zombie

It only spawns in the Receiving Bay, its sound is a radio chatter, and its eyes glow blue through the helmet once Richtofen has taken Samantha’s place.

Movement

The map is played with the movement of Black Ops III Zombies: no thrust jump and no wall run, which belong to the multiplayer and the campaign.

Space Dog

A new secret, absent from Black Ops: a beagle in a space suit, freed with the Wave Gun and the Hacker.

Enemies

Zombies

In Area 51, they come with the health of round one and get stronger each time an alarm sounds. On the Moon, the rounds work as usual.

The Astronaut

Slow, in a space suit, with a red player name above its head; in Black Ops III, the names come from a fixed list. It has four times the health of a zombie of the round, times the number of players, and explodes when it dies. Killing it gives 50 points. In Black Ops III, Dead Wire is very effective against it.

Phasing zombies

Crawlers that teleport over short distances, in the Laboratories.

Hellhounds

Only in Area 51, mixed with the zombies.

Weapons

Every game starts with the 1911, the knife and frag grenades, or with the RK5 once the player has completed the Easter egg of The Giant. None of the wall buys is inside the Receiving Bay.

The Wave Gun held in first person, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The Wave Gun

From the Mystery Box, or now and then from a Quantum Entanglement Device. It comes as two Zap Guns that kill a zombie in one hit, and joins into the Wave Gun, whose beam makes the zombies swell and burst.

The Quantum Entanglement Device floating in the Mystery Box, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The Quantum Entanglement Device

A grenade from the Box with random effects, good or bad. It cannot be Pack-a-Punched with the Crate Power gum.

The Gersh Device

A black hole that pulls in and kills the zombies, in place of the Monkey Bomb.

Every wall buy, the Mystery Box and the Wonder Weapons

Easter egg: Richtofen’s Grand Scheme

The main quest is the one of Black Ops: Richtofen frees Samantha from the pyramid, takes her place, then the other three launch rockets at the Earth. Its steps are the same, and they are described in the book of Moon. What changes in Black Ops III: the whole quest can be done in solo, without having done Call of the Dead or Shangri-La first, and the solo player is always Richtofen.

Outside the Receiving Bay, the four terminals of Samantha Says by the cliff, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Samantha Says

Four terminals outside the Receiving Bay, on the Tunnel 6 side, flash colours that must be repeated in order.

The Moon Pyramid Device under its blue lightning, in the room of the power switch, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The pyramid

The Moon Pyramid Device, next to the power switch, where Samantha is held.

Two rockets taking off from the surface of the Moon towards the Earth, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The rockets

The end of the quest: three rockets take off from the Moon towards the Earth.

Richtofen’s Grand Scheme, step by step

Secrets

The Space Dog, a beagle in a space suit and helmet, floating above the lunar ground, Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The Space Dog

With the Wave Gun, kill a Hellhound in Area 51, shoot the teddy bear of every Mystery Box spot and a bone behind a pipe near the teleporter outside, then hack a pair of red and blue dog bowls in the Laboratories and kill zombies in front of them. A beagle in a space suit can then be seen out on the lunar surface.

Three songs moved

Re-Damned is now turned on from a computer in Tunnel 11, next to the door of the power room; Coming Home in 8-bit from a terminal of the Receiving Bay; Pareidolia in 8-bit from the terminal next to the Bio-Dome door in the Laboratories.

Achievements

Only two of the seven achievements of Moon came back in Zombies Chronicles. Both are worth 15 Gamerscore, or a bronze trophy.

AchievementHow to get it

Trivia

  • Zombies Chronicles came out on PlayStation 4 on May 16, 2017, a month before Xbox One and PC, on June 15, 2017. It cost $29.99.
  • The Wave Gun had already been seen in Black Ops III before the remaster: its blueprint hangs in the multiplayer map Combine.
  • The code name of the original, zombie_paris, recalls that Moon started as a map set in Paris. The remaster is simply called zm_moon.
