The First Room

Every game of Moon starts on Earth, in Area 51, also called No Man’s Land. There are no rounds there: the zombies keep coming, stronger as the minutes pass, until the players step onto the teleporter. It sends them to the Receiving Bay of Griffin Station, on the Moon, and that room is the Moon First Room on ZFRR. The round counter only starts there.

A P.E.S. locker stands right in front of the players when they arrive. The station has no oxygen and low gravity until the power is turned on, and the power switch is far behind the doors, in the Power Room. A First Room game is therefore played from start to finish in low gravity, with the space suit on: without it, a player goes down after 15 seconds (20 with Juggernog). Jumps are higher and longer, for the zombies too.

Unlike the other Black Ops maps, the starting room has no wall buy: the M14 and the Olympia hang outside, past the doors. The game is played with the M1911, the knife and two frag grenades, and whatever was taken in Area 51. Two doors lead out, one on each side, for 750 points; buying one opens the other. Zombies come in through two windows.

Quick Revive

The only perk machine of the room. 1500 points, or 500 in solo, where it works before the power is on.

Excavator panels

Three terminals, one on the left and two on the right, stop the excavators when hacked. The excavators only start after the power is turned on, and the Hacker lies in the Laboratories.

Mystery Box spot

Next to Quick Revive, but the Box never starts the game there, and a Fire Sale only drops once the Box has moved. With the doors closed, it stays out of reach.

Astronaut Zombie

The first one appears right after the first teleport to the Moon, or by round 2 or 3. Its grab takes a perk and throws the player to another part of the map.

No Hellhounds

On Moon, the Hellhounds only run in Area 51. The phasing zombies stay in the Laboratories.

The records standing today, solo to four players, are shown next to this article, and the Moon leaderboard lists every run with its video. Moon has a single ranking, played under the First Room rules kept on B2. B2 has no rule written for Moon alone, but its votes touch the map:

Mule Kick

Disabling it is allowed in solo, not in co-op.

Doors closed

Opening doors is not allowed, and neither are out-of-bounds glitches. Fast ray, rapid fire and the fast grenade glitch are banned; fast knifing is allowed.

Area 51 is part of the game

A 2020 proposal about Juggernog in No Man’s Land was voted down, 42 votes to 5. The round 44 solo record run buys Juggernog and Pack-a-Punches the pistol there before taking the teleporter.

Restricted graphic content

Allowed on Moon since B2’s fifth vote in 2023 (70.6% for).

Platforms

Steam, Plutonium, BGamer, Xbox and PlayStation are accepted, the Wii is not. On Plutonium, the anticheat text must stay visible, and co-op pausing has been allowed since May 2025.

Overview

The Earth rising over the surface of the Moon, map selection image of Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Moon is the last Zombies map of Call of Duty: Black Ops, released in the Rezurrection map pack with the Black Ops versions of Nacht der Untoten, Verrückt, Shi No Numa and Der Riese. The Ultimis crew travel first to Area 51, then to Griffin Station, a Group 935 base on the Moon, where Richtofen carries out his Grand Scheme. It is the largest map of Black Ops, and it brought the Wave Gun, the Quantum Entanglement Device, the Hacker, the P.E.S., the Astronaut Zombie, the excavators and a new perk, Mule Kick.

Characters

The four Ultimis heroes are playable. In co-op, the host is always Richtofen, the second player Dempsey, the third Nikolai and the fourth Takeo; in solo, the character is drawn at random.

Samantha Maxis, voiced by Julie Nathanson, is the announcer until the main quest swaps her soul with Richtofen’s; she then plays in Richtofen’s body and he becomes the announcer. Ludvig Maxis, voiced by Fred Tatasciore, speaks through the station’s computers.

Enemies

Zombies walking on the surface of the Moon, the Earth in the sky behind them in Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Zombies

In Area 51 they come with round one health, then gain strength each time an alarm sounds. On the Moon, the usual rounds apply.

The Astronaut Zombie character model, a space suit with a red-striped helmet in Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Astronaut Zombie

A slow undead in a space suit, with a player’s name above its head. It has four times a zombie’s health times the number of players, cannot be killed by the Wave Gun, Nukes or Insta-Kill, and explodes when it dies, killing the zombies around it.

Phasing zombies

Crawlers that teleport over short distances, only in the Laboratories.

Hellhounds

Only in Area 51, mixed with the zombies.

Perks

Stamin-Up

2000 points, in the second room of Tunnel 11.

The Double Tap Root Beer perk machine, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Double Tap Root Beer

2000 points, on the first floor of the Laboratories.

Quick Revive

1500 points, 500 in solo, in the Receiving Bay.

Juggernog

2500 points, in Area 51 by the teleporter. It swaps places with Speed Cola each time the players come back to Area 51.

Speed Cola

3000 points, in Area 51, in turn with Juggernog. On Moon it also speeds up the Hacker.

Deadshot Daiquiri

1500 points (1000 on PC), on the top floor of the Laboratories.

PhD Flopper

2000 points, in the Bio-Dome. Its blast does not trigger in low gravity.

Mule Kick

4000 points, outside near the teleporter back to Area 51. The perk made its debut on Moon.

Weapons

Every game starts with the M1911, the knife and two frag grenades. The cheapest wall buys, the M14 and the Olympia, are outside the Receiving Bay, so a First Room game never reaches them.

Wave Gun

From the Mystery Box. It comes as two Zap Guns that kill any zombie in one hit, and combines into the Wave Gun, whose beam makes zombies swell and burst.

Quantum Entanglement Device

A tactical grenade from the Box with random effects, good or bad: free perks, weapons, power-ups, or a horde of extra zombies.

Gersh Device

A black hole that pulls in and kills every zombie it reaches. It replaces the Monkey Bomb.

Ray Gun

In the Box, as on every Black Ops map.

Oxygen, the Hacker and the excavators

Outdoor areas never have air or gravity. Indoor areas get both back once the power is on, and can lose them again: an excavator can breach Tunnel 6, Tunnel 11 or the Bio-Dome, and explosives can shatter the windows of the Laboratories and the Receiving Bay.

P.E.S.

The space suit, free in every airlock. It lets a player breathe without oxygen and protects from the phasing zombies’ gas.

Excavators

Pi, Omicron and Epsilon. After the power is on, one of them is announced from time to time; if its panel in the Receiving Bay is not hacked within four minutes, it breaches its area for the rest of the game.

Gravity lifts

Pads in the Bio-Dome that throw players across the dome, with power-ups and perk bottles floating above them.

Hacker

A device found in the Laboratories, in the same slot as the P.E.S. It hacks doors, windows, the Box, wall buys, perks, power-ups and the excavator panels.

Mystery Box

The Box costs 950 points and has four spots: in the Receiving Bay next to Quick Revive (never the first one), in the Power Room next to the Stakeout, outside by the teleporter, and in the Bio-Dome next to PhD Flopper. It holds the Wave Gun, the QED, the Gersh Device, the Ray Gun and most Black Ops weapons. The Hacker can re-roll it, or open it for one roll at any of its spots.

Easter egg: Richtofen’s Grand Scheme

The Moon Pyramid Device in the Power Room of Moon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The main quest has two halves. In the first, the players open the pyramid of the Power Room, the Moon Pyramid Device, with Samantha inside: Simon Says on the computers outside, hacking in the Laboratories, an excavator breach in Tunnel 6 that drops the Vril Sphere, the Wave Gun and 25 souls. That earns Cryogenic Slumber Party. In the second, Richtofen swaps souls with Samantha, then Maxis has the crew fire three rockets at the Earth: Big Bang Theory. In Black Ops, the second half needs two players or more, and one of them must have done the Easter eggs of Call of the Dead and Shangri-La.

Achievements

Big Bang Theory achievement icon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Seven achievements come with Moon, worth 250 Gamerscore in all. The biggest are Big Bang Theory (100G, hidden) and Cryogenic Slumber Party (75G, Silver). None is within reach of a First Room game: the Hacker, the power, the excavators and most perks are behind the doors.

Trivia

  • The level description is a quote from John F. Kennedy’s 1961 speech about landing a man on the Moon.
  • Zombies in Area 51 never drop power-ups.
  • There is no game over song on Moon: only two laughs play.
  • The loading screen shows Samantha’s shadow holding a teddy bear, among adverts for Zombies items such as Mule Kick, the Thundergun and the Gersh Device.
  • Jumping into the trench outside the Receiving Bay downs a player at once; in solo with Quick Revive, the game puts the player back on the surface.
  • The excavators carry Greek letters, and the Epsilon and Omicron symbols are swapped on their panels.
  • Moon was remade for Black Ops III in the Zombies Chronicles pack, which has its own board on ZFRR; this page is about the Black Ops original.
