The First Room

The Temple of Apollo at the start of a game, with the golden statue of Apollo at the end of the nave and the Essex Model 07 on a stone block to the right, Ancient Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Ancient Evil is the Temple of Apollo, where the intro cinematic ends and every game begins. It is a long nave lined with red columns, braziers and banners, closed at the far end by a golden statue of Apollo. This is where the Oracle sits, bound to her chair behind a bowl, and where the Eternal Flame of the map burns. The players start with 500 points, the knife and the weapon, equipment and special weapon of their loadout.

The way out is blocked by debris. The pile that leads out to the Temple Terrace costs 500 points to clear; in a First Room game it stays where it is, and the zombies climb in through the barriers of the temple.

Strife

500 points, a pistol, on a wall of the temple.

Essex Model 07

500 points, a rifle, on a stone block by a column near the spawn. Ammo costs 250 points.

Those are the only two wall weapons of the temple. Besides them, the Welling revolver is the third starting weapon the ZFRR rules allow.

Tributes of the Oracle

Bound to her chair at the side of the nave, the Oracle gives the Tributes to Apollo, challenges paid in points whose rewards are collected from the pillars of the temple. Some rewards are a free perk or a packed weapon.

The Eternal Flame

The blue flame of the temple, relit through the Tributes. It sets the spear of Apollo’s Will on fire, a shield that cannot be built doors closed.

No perk

The four altars, Danu, Ra, Zeus and Odin, are all outside the temple.

No Mystery Box

None of its six spots is in the temple.

Special enemies

The Catalysts start to appear around round 8 and the Blightfathers from round 15, both tearing out of ordinary zombies. The Spartoi come with the Sentinel Artifact, and the Gegenees with the bridle of Pegasus and the eagle cage, all beyond the doors.

The achievement Devoted Follower asks for the first 20 rounds without leaving the inside of the Temple of Apollo, the same room as the ZFRR board.

The Ancient Evil leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. Its reference category is Purist, played on Hardcore; other tabs take the Normal, Hardcore and Realistic games with or without elixirs. The rules of the Purist board:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door or barrier.

Hardcore

The game is played on the Hardcore difficulty, without Custom Mutations.

No elixirs or talismans

None may be used. The rules also give a set elixir loadout: Aftertaste, Point Drops, Anti Entrapment, Newtonian Negation, Quacknarok and Arsenal Accelerator, with Conflagration Liquidation, Who’s Keeping Score, Extra Credit and Dividend Yield.

Weapons

The starting weapon is the Welling or a wall weapon of the temple, the Strife or the Essex Model 07. Only frag grenades and Acid Bombs, and no special weapon.

Full rounds

Every round is played in full, without glitches or exploits.

Video

The full game is recorded, and in co-op the loadouts are shown in the lobby before the map is launched. A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Black Ops 4

The Project-BO4 client is allowed, nothing may be injected but fast restarts, split-screen is allowed but bots are not, no weapon duplication and no going down on purpose. The health, points, round counter and chat stay visible.

The intro picks up after IX. The crew wakes from the vision of the Oracle, opens a stone door by spelling « Poseidon », and finds the real Delphi in a cavern: the town above ground was a decoy, Shaw explains. They walk through an idle horde to the Temple of Apollo, where the Oracle, bound to a chair, begs them to free her. She loses consciousness, and the zombies she was holding back turn on the four.

The map has two halves. The first is the city itself, its temples and monuments; the Sentinel Artifact waits in the Amphitheater. The second, the Dark Side, is only reached on the back of Pegasus, and holds the Pack-a-Punch.

A Gegenees, a six-armed giant with a spear and a round shield, among zombies, Ancient Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

Gegenees

Six-armed giants with a sword, a shield and spears. They throw exploding spears, and their shield can blind the players around them. One comes with the Golden Bridle, another with the eagle cage of Python Pass.

Catalysts

Zombies that tear open into fire, water, poison or electric Catalysts, from round 8 or so.

Blightfathers

Large monsters that grow out of a zombie from round 15. They grab the players with their tongue and spit homing vomit; the sacs on their back and elbows are their weak points.

Perks

As on every map of Black Ops 4, each player brings the four perks of his loadout, and each of the four altars sells one of them. On Ancient Evil, the altars are god statues: Danu in the Offering of the Attalids, Ra in the Gymnasium Bathhouse, Zeus in the Spartan Monument and Odin in the River of Sorrow, on the Dark Side. None of them is in the Temple of Apollo. With all four perks, the Odin altar also gives its perk a modifier.

Weapons

Eighteen weapons are on the walls, from the Strife and the Essex Model 07 of the temple to the Koshka of the Cliff Ruins. The Mystery Box costs 950 points and has six spots, none of them in the temple.

Pegasus and the Pack-a-Punch

The Sentinel Artifact of the Amphitheater starts a lockdown that Pegasus ends. With the Golden Bridle, the players ride the horse from the Spartan Monument to the Dark Side, free two eagles from their cages and hold the Center of the World while the eagles reveal the Pack-a-Punch Machine.

Tributes to Apollo

The Oracle bound to her chair behind the bowl of the Tributes, in the Temple of Apollo, Ancient Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops 4 Zombies

The Oracle hands out the Tributes to Apollo, short challenges paid in points, whose price depends on the round. They have a two-minute limit and can be repeated without end, and the rewards climb from Common to Rare, Legendary and Epic. They also relight the Eternal Flame of the temple, which the shield, the Exalted Hands and the main quest all need. The achievement A Worthy Tribute asks for the flame to be fully relit by round 15.

Buildables

Apollo’s Will is built from three parts found on the Upper Road, in the Treasuries or the Stoa, and on the first Gegenees. The Pegasus Strike is forged from an anvil, a hammer and tongs found on the Dark Side.

Primordial Hands

After the Sentinel Artifact, the Oracle gives a riddle that leads to a Dormant Hand. Laid on the shrine of a god, it becomes the Fallen Hand of Gaia, Charon, Hemera or Ouranos. Each one has its own quest to become a Redeemed Hand, then the four together are raised to Exalted Hands at the Pack-a-Punch.

Easter egg: Greek Tragedy

The main quest uses everything the map offers: the burning spear, the four Redeemed Hands, the Pegasus Strike and a giant ballista aimed at the Python. It ends on Mount Olympus against the corrupted Pegasus, then Perseus himself.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zm_red.
  • The layout follows the real site of Delphi: the theatre of the map matches the ruins of the ancient theatre.
  • The Spartoi, and their jerky animation, are a nod to the skeleton warriors Ray Harryhausen made for Jason and the Argonauts in 1963.
  • Eight scrolls left by Perseus tell, day by day, how he took the sisters of the Pythia hostage and forced her to start the trial.
  • In the ending, the eyes of the Oracle turn yellow as she reads the memory of Scarlett: the mask of Tutankhamun, the Tower of Pisa, the Declaration of Independence, Beethoven and Queen Victoria pass on screen.
