The First Room

The starting courtyard of Der Riese, a rifle outline on the wall on the left, a staircase and the mainframe tower on the right, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

On ZFRR, the Der Riese First Room is the starting courtyard, the open area just outside the factory where Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo and Richtofen appear at the start of every game. The game calls it the receiver zone: it is built around the mainframe, the landing pad of the three teleporters, with the Pack-a-Punch Machine standing behind a shutter on the same platform. A metal staircase climbs to a walkway, and another goes down below floor level towards one of the barriers.

Two doors lead out, one on each side of the mainframe, both at 750 points, and both stay closed in a First Room game. Zombies come in through four barriers: two on either side of the mainframe, one beside a generator and one at the bottom of the staircase that goes down. Every game starts with the M1911, the knife and two Stielhandgranates, the German stick grenades that replace the frag grenades of the other Black Ops maps.

Kar98k

200 points, the cheapest wall weapon of the map. A bolt-action rifle that kills in one headshot only in the first rounds.

Chalk outline of the Gewehr 43 on a wall, the 600-point wall buy of the starting courtyard in Der Riese, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Gewehr 43

600 points, a semi-automatic rifle with ten rounds a magazine and 120 in reserve.

Those are the only two wall buys of the courtyard. With the doors closed, almost everything else is out of reach:

No power

The power switch is in the Courtyard behind the factory, past at least two doors. Without it, no perk works, the teleporters cannot be linked and the electric traps stay off.

No perk

None of the five machines stands in the starting area. Quick Revive, the only one that helps a solo player stay alive, is in the Main Factory, by Teleporter C.

No Mystery Box

None of its six spots is in the starting area, so a First Room game is played with wall weapons and power-ups only.

The mainframe

The pad where every teleport ends. It only links once the power is on, so it stays dead for the whole game.

The Pack-a-Punch

Visible on the mainframe platform, behind a shutter that rises in three steps as the teleporters are linked. It never opens without the power.

No trap

The three electric traps of the map are in the Automobile Garage, on the Animal Testing Lab side and under the bridge, all behind doors and all on the power.

Hellhounds

They come into the courtyard like everywhere else. The first Hellhound round falls on round 5, 6 or 7, then every four or five rounds, and the last dog of each one drops a Max Ammo.

The Der Riese leaderboard lists every run with its video. B2, whose rules ZFRR follows, keeps the general First Room rules of Black Ops for Der Riese, with one vote of its own for the map:

Doors closed

Opening doors is not allowed, and neither are out-of-bounds glitches.

Restricted graphic content

Playing with the reduced gore setting is allowed on Der Riese, decided in B2’s fifth First Room vote (April 2023, 58.8% for).

Glitches

Fast knife is allowed; the fast ray exploit, rapid fire and abusing fast grenades have been banned since October 2020.

Platforms

Steam, Plutonium, BGamer, Xbox and PlayStation are allowed, the Wii is not. On Steam and BGamer, the host must show the files of the zone/Common folder and launch the game from its executable. The Competitive-T5 plugin is the only plugin allowed.

Co-op

The host’s point of view is required. Fixing the backwards speed is allowed in solo only, and so is disabling Mule Kick. On Plutonium, disconnecting, reconnecting and pausing in co-op are allowed.

Fog

Removing the fog is not allowed, and neither is reading the player’s health.

Overview

Der Riese, German for “The Giant”, is the fourth Zombies map and the last one of Call of Duty: World at War. It is set in Waffenfabrik Der Riese, the main factory of Group 935 in Lower Silesia, near Breslau. The map brought the teleporters, the Pack-a-Punch Machine, the Monkey Bomb, the Bowie Knife and the Carpenter power-up. Call of Duty: Black Ops brought it back with better graphics, the Black Ops weapons in the Mystery Box and, after an update, Mule Kick. Its official description: “The Giant is rising. Face the might of the Nazi Zombies in their heartland.”

The crew arrives from Shi No Numa. Richtofen, guided by his diary, wants to use the teleporter of the factory, the place where Samantha Maxis vanished after Richtofen locked her and her father in the test chamber with Fluffy, her dog turned Hellhound. The radios of the map tell that story.

Characters

The four Ultimis heroes, the original crew of the first maps, are drawn at random among the players.

T

“Tank” Dempsey

The US Marine of the crew.

N

Nikolai Belinski

The Soviet soldier, rarely sober.

T

Takeo Masaki

The soldier of the Imperial Japanese Army.

E

Edward Richtofen

The Group 935 doctor, back in the factory where he worked with Maxis.

Samantha Maxis is the announcer of the map and the voice of the Fly Trap. Ludvig Maxis and Richtofen are heard on the radios hidden around the factory.

Enemies

Zombies

Undead German soldiers of the factory. In Der Riese they can climb ledges and jump down from higher than on the earlier maps.

Hellhounds

They appear in a flash of lightning while fog covers the map. The first Hellhound round is round 5, 6 or 7, then one every four or five rounds; the last dog drops a Max Ammo.

Mixed rounds

From round 16, a Hellhound can turn up among the zombies of a normal round, one at most until round 20, then more as the rounds go up.

Teleporter dogs

After round 20, with the three teleporters linked, teleporting again less than a minute after the previous teleport brings four Hellhounds instead of a power-up.

Perks

The Juggernog machine behind a fence in Der Riese, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Every machine needs the power, and none of them stands in the starting courtyard.

Quick Revive

1500 points; in solo, 500 for a self-revive, up to three times. In the Main Factory, near Teleporter C.

Juggernog

2500 points, upstairs from the Animal Testing Lab.

Speed Cola

3000 points, in the hallway behind the right-hand door of the starting area.

Double Tap Root Beer

2000 points, upstairs from the Automobile Garage.

Mule Kick

4000 points, in the Automobile Garage, added by the September 2011 update (patch 1.15 on PC).

Going prone in front of the four original machines gives 25 points once per machine; it does not work in front of Mule Kick.

Weapons

The Wunderwaffe DG-2 held in first person, Black Ops version, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The wall weapons are the World at War ones, at the same prices; the Black Ops version only changed the Mystery Box, which now offers the Black Ops arsenal.

Starting courtyard

The Kar98k for 200 and the Gewehr 43 for 600. The only two in the First Room.

Behind the two first doors

The M1A1 Carbine for 600 on the left, the Double-Barreled Shotgun for 1200 on the right.

Deeper in the factory

The Thompson and the STG-44 for 1200, the Type 100 and the MP40 for 1000, the M1897 Trench Gun and the FG42 for 1500.

Equipment

The Bouncing Betty for 1000 and the Bowie Knife for 3000 in the Courtyard, and Stielhandgranates for 250.

Wunderwaffe DG-2

The wonder weapon of the map, from the Mystery Box only, one at a time. Its lightning chains from zombie to zombie.

Monkey Bomb

Its first map. Thrown, it draws the zombies around it before it explodes.

Every wall weapon, its price and the Mystery Box

Teleporters and the Pack-a-Punch

The mainframe pad of Der Riese with the link stopwatch on screen, the Pack-a-Punch shutter behind it, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Three teleporters, A, B and C, stand in the far rooms of the factory. Once the power is on, hold the use button inside one of them to start a 30-second countdown, then reach the mainframe in the starting courtyard and hold the use button there to link it. Each link raises the Pack-a-Punch shutter a little; the third one opens it.

Teleporting

1500 points from a linked teleporter, always to the mainframe. The teleport kills the zombies standing on the pad.

Power-up

A power-up can appear in front of the mainframe after a teleport.

Pack-a-Punch

5000 points an upgrade. World at War weapons get an engraved steel finish, Black Ops weapons the usual camo, and the Wunderwaffe DG-2 turns gold.

Linking the teleporters, step by step

Power and traps

The power switch is in the Courtyard, behind the generator, below the bridge. Turning it on powers the perks, the Pack-a-Punch and the traps, lowers the two halves of the bridge between the Animal Testing Lab and the Automobile Garage, and opens two doors between the corridors of the first rooms and the Courtyard.

The map has three electro-shock defenses, 1000 points each: one in the Automobile Garage, one on the Animal Testing Lab side, and one under the bridge in the Courtyard. A trap kills the zombies that walk through it, then needs time to cool down.

Mystery Box

950 points a spin. The Box starts every game in the Courtyard, in front of the generator, and has five other spots: by each of the three teleporters, in the Animal Testing Lab and in the Automobile Garage, by the furnace. None is in the starting courtyard.

Ray Gun

The game’s scripts never give it before the Box has moved once; after 8 spins without it its chance goes up, and again after 12.

Monkey Bomb

More likely as long as no player holds one.

Limited weapons

One Wunderwaffe DG-2, one Crossbow and one Ballistic Knife at a time.

The power-ups of the map are Max Ammo, Insta-Kill, Double Points, Nuke and Carpenter, which first appeared in Der Riese.

Easter egg

The Monkey Bomb holding a grenade and a Molotov in the furnace, one of the three Fly Trap objects in Der Riese, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Der Riese has no main quest. Its best-known Easter egg is the Fly Trap: shoot a hidden panel in an alley near the mainframe with a Pack-a-Punched weapon, and Samantha starts a game of hide and seek with three objects hidden around the factory. In World at War it gave an achievement; in Black Ops it gives nothing but her lines.

The Fly Trap

A Pack-a-Punched weapon, so the power and the three teleporters first. Out of reach in a First Room game.

Beauty of Annihilation

Hold the use button on three green jars with spinal cords to play the song of the map.

Mister Monkey

Throw a Monkey Bomb into the furnace of the Automobile Garage and Samantha gets angry.

The radios

Recordings of Maxis and Richtofen, one of them in the starting courtyard.

The Fly Trap, the song, the radios and the secrets

Secrets

The shadow of a teddy bear on an alley wall in Der Riese, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Several secrets can be seen without leaving the starting courtyard:

The spawn radio

A small hand-held radio beside a barrel, by the staircase that goes down. Hold the use button on it to hear Maxis trying to control test subjects back from the teleporters.

“Embrace the trinity”

Written on the wall beside the mainframe platform, “Embrace the trinity and true power will be yours”, a hint at the three links that open the Pack-a-Punch.

The teddy bear shadow

From one of the barriers of the mainframe, the shadow of a teddy bear shows on a wall of the alley outside.

J.D

The initials “J.D” are carved to the right of the barrier at the bottom of the stairs, and again near the door of the Animal Testing Lab.

Achievements

None. The nine Der Riese achievements, from Elevate Your Senses to Pack Addict, belong to World at War. The Black Ops version has none: the achievement calls of its scripts are switched off, and the Rezurrection achievements are all written for Moon.

Trivia

  • The game files call the Black Ops version zombie_cod5_factory, the World at War one nazi_zombie_factory.
  • The Black Ops version fixed a World at War bug where splash damage from the Wunderwaffe DG-2 took away the effect of Juggernog.
  • The loading screen of the World at War version showed a finger and an eyeball on the map of the factory; the Black Ops version removed them, but not their blood.
  • The clock above the entrance to the Courtyard is stopped at 1:15, a nod to Element 115.
  • The Rezurrection poster spells the map “Der Reise”, “The Travel”.
  • A notice board near the Animal Testing Lab pins photos of Call of the Dead, Ascension and Paris, the codename of the map that became Moon.
  • The idea of the wall map that lights up with each linked teleporter came partly from Jason Blundell’s memories of the British game show The Crystal Maze.
  • Black Ops III brought the map back as The Giant, then again in Zombies Chronicles.
