The First Room

The starting courtyard in the snow, with the mainframe glowing blue at the back, The Giant, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of The Giant is the starting courtyard, the snowy yard just outside the factory where the Primis crew lands at the start of every game. The game calls it the receiver zone: it is built around the mainframe, the pad where every teleport ends, with the Pack-a-Punch Machine waiting behind a shutter on the same platform. The players start with 500 points, an MR6 pistol, the knife and frag grenades.

The courtyard has two doors, one on each side of the mainframe, both sold for 750 points: the left one leads towards the Animal Testing Lab, the right one towards the Automobile Garage. In a First Room game they stay closed, so the power is never turned on and the teleporters never link.

RK5 burst pistol, Gunsmith render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

RK5

500 points, a three-round burst pistol, on a wall of the courtyard, to the right of the power-up spot, when facing the clock.

Sheiva semi-automatic rifle, Gunsmith render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Sheiva

500 points, a semi-automatic rifle, on the wall to the right of the Pack-a-Punch Machine.

Those are the only two wall buys of the courtyard. The zombies climb in through barriers around it, one of them at the bottom of the stairs that go down below the yard, another next to the door on the factory side.

The mainframe of the starting courtyard under its blue glowing coil, The Giant, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The mainframe

The landing pad of the three teleporters, under a tall coil that glows blue. Without the power it never links, so it stays dead for the whole game.

The Pack-a-Punch

On the mainframe platform, behind a shutter that only rises as the teleporters are linked. It never opens doors closed.

No perk

The machines of The Giant are drawn at random each game among the spots of Der Riese, and none of them is in the courtyard. Quick Revive is out of reach, even in solo.

No Mystery Box

None of its six spots is in the courtyard, so a First Room game is played with the two walls and the power-ups.

No GobbleGum

No machine stands in the courtyard, and the ZFRR board for this map allows no gum at all.

Hellhounds

They come into the courtyard like everywhere else. The first Hellhound round is round 5, 6 or 7, then one every four or five rounds, and the last dog of each round drops a Max Ammo.

The The Giant leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. It is kept apart from the Der Riese board of Black Ops: the geometry is the same, but the two games are not comparable. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door.

No GobbleGums

Neither Classic nor Mega GobbleGums are allowed.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded, and each player shows their gum loadout before, during or after the game.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Overview

The Giant is the second Zombies map of Call of Duty: Black Ops III, a remake of Der Riese, German for “The Giant”, first seen in World at War and brought back in Black Ops. It came as a bonus map with the special editions and the Season Pass of the game. The mission briefing: “Re-awaken The Giant. Return to the secret facility where it all began, and strike at the heart of the zombie scourge.”

The story follows Origins. In the intro, the original Richtofen has just locked Ludvig and Samantha Maxis in the teleporter room when the Primis crew catches him. He activates the teleporter anyway, and the Primis Richtofen steps out of it and shoots his older self, creating a paradox. The factory clock stops at 1:15 and snow starts to fall: unlike Der Riese, The Giant is covered in snow.

Characters

The four playable characters are the Primis crew, the younger versions of the heroes, as they appeared in Origins.

"Tank" Dempsey of the Primis crew in the intro cinematic, The Giant, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

“Tank” Dempsey

The American Marine. He holds the original Richtofen at gunpoint in the intro.

Takeo Masaki

The Japanese officer, who draws his katana against the horde at the end of the intro.

Edward Richtofen of the Primis crew stepping out of the teleporter, intro cinematic, The Giant, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Edward Richtofen

The doctor of Group 935, who comes out of the teleporter and kills his own older self “to secure a better tomorrow”.

The original Richtofen laughing in his officer cap, intro cinematic, The Giant, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The original Richtofen

The Richtofen of the Ultimis crew, killed by his younger self in the intro.

L

Ludvig Maxis

Heard on the radios of the factory, and the voice of the Fly Trap.

S

Samantha Maxis

The announcer of the map. She laughs at a player who picks up a perk bottle with every perk already taken.

Enemies

A zombie with glowing eyes breaking through a barrier, intro cinematic, The Giant, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Zombies

The undead soldiers of the factory, with orange eyes. Up to 24 of them can be on the map at once.

A Hellhound with burning fur, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Hellhounds

They appear in a flash of lightning on their own rounds, the first one on round 5, 6 or 7, then every four or five rounds. The last dog of each round drops a Max Ammo, and later in the game a Hellhound can also turn up among the zombies of a normal round.

Perks

Five machines stand in the spots of Der Riese, but which perk sits in which spot is drawn at random at the start of each game. None of them is in the courtyard, and all of them need the power.

Quick Revive

1500, or 500 in solo.

Juggernog

2500.

Speed Cola

3000.

Double Tap Root Beer

2000.

Mule Kick

4000.

Stamin-Up or Deadshot Daiquiri

2000 for Stamin-Up, 1500 for Deadshot Daiquiri. A sixth machine, hidden under a pile of snow, is freed by a secret; the game draws which of the two it holds.

Going prone in front of a perk machine gives 100 points once. A Random Perk Bottle can also drop at the mainframe after a teleport.

Weapons

Every game starts with an MR6, the knife and frag grenades. The walls sell ten weapons, the Bowie Knife, the Trip Mine and frag grenades, two of them in the courtyard:

Courtyard

The RK5 and the Sheiva, 500 each. In the First Room.

Animal Testing Lab

The L-CAR 9 for 750 outside the lab, the Kuda for 1250 inside, and the Trip Mine for 1000 upstairs.

Automobile Garage

The KRM-262 for 750 and the VMP for 1300.

Power switch

The Vesper for 1250, in the outdoor hallway.

Teleporters

The M8A7 for 1500 by Teleporter A, the HVK-30 for 1600 and frag grenades for 250 by Teleporter B, the KN-44 for 1400 and the Bowie Knife for 3000 by Teleporter C.

Wunderwaffe DG-2, third-person render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Wunderwaffe DG-2

The wonder weapon of the map, from the Mystery Box. Its bolt chains through up to ten zombies, and on Black Ops III it no longer shocks the player who fires it. Pack-a-Punched, it becomes the Wunderwaffe DG-3 JZ.

Annihilator revolver, menu render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Annihilator

A revolver given by the Fly Trap, the Easter egg of the map. It takes the special weapon slot and holds 18 shots in all.

A Monkey Bomb held in hand, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Monkey Bomb

From the Box. It draws the zombies before it explodes, and it is needed for the secret perk machine.

Every weapon, its price and its place

Teleporters and the Pack-a-Punch

The power switch is on a generator in the Courtyard behind the factory, reached by dropping down from the upper walkway on the Animal Testing side or on the factory side. Once it is on, each of the three teleporters, A, B and C, must be linked to the mainframe: activate its pad, then reach the mainframe pad within 30 seconds. Each link raises the shutter a little more, and the third one opens the Pack-a-Punch.

Pack-a-Punch

5000 points for the first upgrade and 2500 for each new pack, which gives the weapon an alternate ammo type. On this map the upgraded weapons wear the Etching camouflage.

Teleporting

Once linked, a teleporter sends the players back to the mainframe for 1500 points. After a trip, a power-up can drop at the mainframe, sometimes a Random Perk Bottle.

The bridge

It comes down with the power and links the Animal Testing side to the Automobile Garage side without going through the courtyard.

The power, the three teleporters and the Pack-a-Punch

Mystery Box

950 points a spin, on six possible spots. Unlike Der Riese, where it always started by the power switch, its first spot is drawn at random.

Animal Testing Lab

On the side opposite the Kuda.

Teleporter A

Right in front of the teleporter.

Automobile Garage

In the back right-hand corner of the room.

Teleporter B

On the small balcony to the left of the teleporter.

Courtyard

Near the power switch, on the other side of the generator.

Teleporter C

At the top and very end of the catwalk.

Besides the weapons of Black Ops III, it holds the Ray Gun, the Wunderwaffe DG-2 and the Monkey Bomb.

GobbleGum

The GobbleGum machines of The Giant are all behind doors: in the Animal Testing Lab, before the Automobile Garage and outside the room of Teleporter C. The ZFRR board for this map is a no-gum board, Classic and Mega alike, and each player shows their gum loadout on video to prove it.

Easter egg: the Fly Trap

Instead of a long main quest, The Giant brings back the Fly Trap of Der Riese, renamed Paradoxical Prologue. This time Ludvig Maxis speaks in place of Samantha: the players light a beacon so that he can find the crew. It needs the power and the Pack-a-Punch.

The Annihilator floating in the flames of a furnace, The Giant, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The reward

The Annihilator, floating in a furnace of the Automobile Garage, 1000 XP and a Gateworm on the picture of the map in the menu.

The control panel

Shot with a Pack-a-Punched weapon from the barrier outside the Animal Testing Lab. Toys rise from the ground and fly away.

Three hidden toys

A Cymbal Monkey in a furnace by Teleporter A, a teddy bear on a high balcony over the power switch side, and a teddy bear in a vat by Teleporter B.

The Fly Trap, step by step

Secrets

The Stamin-Up machine revealed in the melted snow of an alley, The Giant, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The secret perk machine

A Monkey Bomb taken through each of the three teleporters, then a button by the mainframe, make the head of a giant robot fire a beam that melts a pile of snow. Under it waits Stamin-Up or Deadshot Daiquiri.

Beauty of Annihilation

Three glowing jars play a remix of the Der Riese song by Brian Tuey.

Icarus

The plane of Mob of the Dead rests on a roof of the factory.

Ciphers and radios

Five ciphers, a blueprint signed by Dr. Monty and eleven radios are hidden around the map.

The secret perk, the song and the hidden details

Achievements

The Giant has no achievement or trophy of its own. Its only reward is the one of Paradoxical Prologue: 1000 XP and the Gateworm on the picture of the map. The Revelations achievement A Better Tomorrow takes its name from the line Richtofen speaks in the intro of The Giant.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zm_factory, and the courtyard of the First Room is the receiver zone.
  • Unlike Der Riese, the map is covered in snow. On Xbox One the snow was first missing, until an update on February 8, 2016.
  • The factory clock stops at 1:15 in the intro.
  • The swastikas of Der Riese are replaced by Iron Crosses.
  • A Monkey Bomb thrown into a furnace screams until it explodes instead of playing its song, as it already did in Der Riese.
  • From a tunnel near Teleporter C, containers full of gold bars can be seen, a nod to the legend of the Nazi gold train buried in the tunnels of the real Project Riese.
  • Behind the loading screen are the blueprints of the Wave Gun of Combine.
  • The map came out on PlayStation 3 on June 2, 2016 and on Xbox 360 on July 5, 2016. Since the Xbox 360 Marketplace closed on July 29, 2024, it can no longer be bought there.
