The First Room

The Courtyard at the start of a game, at night in the rain, with the bus parked on the right and the Atlas 45 in hand, Outbreak, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Zombies

On ZFRR, the First Room of Outbreak is the Courtyard, the large yard outside the Atlas facility where the four survivors start every game. A bus is parked in the middle of it, and the burning wreck of the Warbird that crashed in the intro lies against one of its walls. Every player starts with 500 credits, an Atlas 45 pistol and four frag grenades, one of which comes back each round up to four. Nobody has an exoskeleton yet: the Exo Suits wait in the Exo Testing Room, at the heart of the facility.

The Courtyard has two doors, both sold for 750 credits: one leads to the Administration, the other to the Main Hub. In a First Room game they stay closed, so the Exo Suits, the 3D Printer, the Upgrade Stations and every exo upgrade but one stay out of reach.

Those are the only two wall weapons of the Courtyard. In Exo Zombies, wall weapons are printed on the spot: the weapon shows as a green hologram on the wall until it is bought.

The two printers

The MK14 and the Bulldog each glow on their own wall printer. The MK14 has more range and ammunition, the Bulldog hits harder up close and reloads faster.

By the door to the Administration: 500 credits in solo, where it works as a self-revive and can be bought three times, and 1,500 credits with other players, where it makes reviving teammates twice as fast. It is the only exo upgrade that does not need an Exo Suit.

The Administration door

One of the two 750-credit doors, its frame lined with red light. The Decontamination Zone that cures infected players is behind it.

The Warbird wreck

The rescue Warbird of the intro lies burning against the facility wall, straight ahead of the spawn. The Black Box that starts the main quest sits just outside the wreck.

Where the zombies come from

They drop from three spots on the rooftops, climb in through three windows and crawl out from under the bus. Players often run a train around the bus.

Orbital Care Packages

They land at random during the rounds, and most of them come down in the starting area.

Host rounds

A Host that hits a player infects them, and the player has a short time to reach the Decontamination Zone, which costs 250 credits, before dying. With the Administration door closed, the only cure is to finish the round: the last zombie of a Host round drops a Full Reload and cures every infected player.

Security Dog rounds

The dogs come out of their kennels during their own rounds, and the last one drops a Full Reload. Some of them act like EMZs or Exploders.

The Outbreak leaderboard is a single board for the map, with no category of its own. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door or barrier.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Platforms

On PC the S1X client is allowed. Playing on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 is not allowed, because the game plays too differently on the previous generation.

Video

The whole game must be recorded. A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Overview

Outbreak is the first Exo Zombies map of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, released with Havoc, the first DLC pack of the game. Exo Zombies was developed by Raven Software in partnership with Sledgehammer Games. The map is set in a secret Atlas research facility overrun by zombies, and its in-game description reads: “Atlas’s new pet broke out of the lab and infested an entire compound. Fight with up to 4 players to survive against endless waves of mutant zombies!” The other Exo Zombies maps are in the book of Advanced Warfare.

The intro, narrated by Oz, explains the outbreak. Atlas dropped its Manticore bomb to end a war, and the dead came back. Three platoons were sent to cage them, two came back in body bags, and the captured zombies were brought to this facility to be studied in secret, on a Sub-Level 6 the staff knew nothing about. One night they break out. Lilith finds the security footage, Kahn calls security, Decker tries to evacuate the employees, and the four meet at the landing zone just as the rescue Warbird is attacked by zombies and crashes.

Enemies

A group of exo zombies in exoskeletons rushing down a corridor of the facility, Outbreak, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Zombies

Exo Zombies

The former Atlas staff and test subjects, many still wearing their exoskeletons, which lets them leap at the players.

A Charger with red glowing eyes and an EMZ crackling with blue electricity in a corridor of the facility, Outbreak, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Zombies

Chargers and EMZs

Chargers, with red glowing eyes and chest, run faster and leap more often. EMZs crackle with blue electricity; their hits shut down a player’s Exo Suit for five seconds.

The Host, a deformed test subject with needles and tubes in its torso, official model, Outbreak, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Zombies

Hosts

Deformed test subjects with a cluster of boils over the left eye and green Manticore clouds around them. They come in their own rounds, always sprint, and infect the players they hit.

Exploders

Zombies dripping green liquid and burning, which blow up when players get close. They appear after the first Host round.

Security Dogs

The zombified dogs of the security team, in rounds of their own. Some carry the EMZ or the Exploder effect.

Exo upgrades

The exo upgrades play the part of the perks. Most areas of the map have a power switch that turns on the upgrades of that area. Except for Exo Medic, they only work with an Exo Suit, picked up for free in the Exo Testing Room once the generator by the Morgue entrance has been turned on.

The Exo Testing Room

The central room of the facility, with catwalks all around. The exoskeletons stand behind security glass that drops once the generator near the Morgue entrance is turned on; they are then free.

Utilities

The Decontamination Zone, a round pad with the Atlas logo, official model, Outbreak, Call of Duty Advanced Warfare Zombies

The Decontamination Zone

In a corner of the Administration, close to the Courtyard door. For 250 credits it cures an infected player and hides them from the zombies for a few seconds.

The Trash Chute

One in the Administration, facing the Upgrade Station, one in the Exo Testing Room. A player who jumps in is carried elsewhere in the facility, out of reach of the zombies. The first use of a round costs 100 credits, then 500, rising by 500 per use up to 2,000.

Credit Dispensers

Machines that give 100 credits per use. Two of them switch on at random at the end of each round, up to four at a time, and once in a while one jackpots.

Weapons

Seven weapons are bought off the walls, from the MK14 and the Bulldog of the Courtyard for 500 credits to the Tac-19 of the Holding area for 1,500. The 3D Printer, the Mystery Box of Exo Zombies, costs 1,000 credits and moves between five spots. It holds the CEL-3 Cauterizer, the directed energy shotgun added with Havoc for Exo Zombies. Two Upgrade Stations, in the Administration and the Holding area, upgrade a weapon up to Mk 20 for 2,500 credits per use.

Outbreak: Weapons

Easter egg

The main quest, Game Over, Man!, has the survivors call in a rescue. They pick up the Black Box of the crashed Warbird, plug it into a computer of the Morgue, recover their four ID badges, raise their clearance to level 50 and check in at their hand scanners. The rescue Warbird is then shot down, unless the clearance was earned the hard way. The reward is an experimental Upgrade Station that takes a weapon to Mk 25.

Outbreak: Game Over, Man!

Secrets

The musical Easter egg plays Ride of the Valkyries by Richard Wagner. A few notes play as each of three objects is found:

  1. A wrench stuck in a crack of a white wall in the Administration, next to a sign near the MP11.
  2. A bone saw on a table of the Exo Testing Room, behind two doors that are almost closed.
  3. A flat iron on a bed with a corpse, in one of the rooms of the Holding area.

Achievements

Outbreak has ten achievements and trophies, worth 250 Gamerscore in all. Two of them only ask to survive, to round 10 for I’m Alive! and to round 25 for Survivor; the most valuable is Game Over, Man!, earned by completing the main quest.

Trivia

  • The internal name of the map is mp_zombie_lab. The facility reuses elements of the Bio Lab and Captured campaign missions and of the Bio Lab multiplayer map.
  • A computer in the Morgue shows the number “007”, a reference to James Bond.
  • The name of the main quest quotes the line “Game over, man!” from the film Aliens, said by Bill Paxton, the actor of Kahn. Kahn also quotes it when he goes down.
  • In the trailer, the screen Lilith types on reads “ATLAS: Now we make the normal” in mirror writing.
