The First Room

On ZFRR, the Der Eisendrache First Room is the Tram Station, the cable car station at the top of the mountain where the gondolas from the valley arrive and where the players spawn. It is a large steel hall open on the void, with two gondolas docked along its edge, staircases with yellow railings and a small office. Every player starts with 500 points, the MR6 pistol, the knife and two frag grenades.

Three ways lead out, all closed in a First Room game: the gate on the right side of the station, 750 points, which opens onto the Lower Courtyard and Double Tap; the door next to Quick Revive, which opens onto a tunnel climbing to Mule Kick; and the way to the Juggernog room, between the station and the Undercroft. The power switch is in the Armory, deep inside the castle, so the power stays off for the whole game.

RK5 burst pistol, Gunsmith model, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

RK5

500 points, ammo 250. A three-round burst pistol on the left side of the station, by the window of the Quick Revive office.

Sheiva semi-automatic rifle, Gunsmith model, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Sheiva

500 points, ammo 250. A semi-automatic rifle, the other wall buy of the station.

Those are the only two wall buys of the First Room, the same pair as in the spawn of the other original Black Ops III maps. The station has five boarded windows.

The Tram control panel of the station with its "Call Tram" prompt in Der Eisendrache, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The Tram

The control panel by the gondolas calls the right-hand gondola for a Tram Fuse. It comes back with a power-up or a weapon, sometimes with a zombie inside. One fuse lies in the station at the start of every game; zombies and Panzersoldats drop the next ones, and each player can carry only one.

The Wundersphere landing pad on the floor of the station, lit blue in Der Eisendrache, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The landing pad

A Wundersphere landing pad sits in the station. Its Wundersphere is at the Rocket Test site, far behind the doors, so nobody lands here in a First Room game.

Quick Revive

The only perk of the station, inside the small office near the RK5. 500 points in solo, 1500 in co-op.

The second gondola

Throw grenades into the left-hand gondola at the very start, before it leaves, and the fifth fuse of the game calls it instead of the right one. It holds Monkey Bombs or a Pack-a-Punched weapon.

The GobbleGum machine

In the corner below the right staircase. The ZFRR board is played without GobbleGums, so it stays unused.

No Mystery Box, no trap

None of the six Box spots, the five Der Wunderfizz spots or the traps are in the station, and the Pack-a-Punch needs the power.

The threat of the station is the Panzersoldat. It jumps in from outside the castle for the first time on round 12, then comes back every five to six rounds. Its electric cannon stuns players and charges the zombies it hits, and its flamethrower sets them on fire. The first one to die drops a part of the Ragnarok DG-4, which cannot be built with the doors closed. From the station, the Giant robot of The Giant can be seen slumped against the mountain, next to the village below.

The rules of the Der Eisendrache leaderboard, in short:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening a single door.

No GobbleGums

The board is played without gums, and the loadout must be shown before, during or after the game.

Clean games

No glitch, no exploit, and every round is played in full.

The Tram

On PC, a patch that makes the gondola bring the Ray Gun is allowed, and so is patching all of its rewards.

Crawl Space in co-op

Allowed for sleeper purposes.

Video

The whole game must be recorded. In co-op, every player who does not show up in the pre-game or post-game lobby needs his own point of view. A Twitch recording must be a highlight, not a past broadcast; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Overview

The courtyard and the main building of Griffin Castle under the snow in Der Eisendrache, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Der Eisendrache, German for “The Iron Dragon”, is the Zombies map of Awakening, the first map pack of Call of Duty: Black Ops III. It is set in Griffin Castle, a fortress of Group 935 in the Austrian Alps with a rocket launch site on its side. Its mission briefing reads: “Bound together by a fragile alliance, our heroes pursue the scattered remnants of Group 935 to their mountain top fortress in the Austrian Alps…” The map is half as big again as The Giant.

The intro picks up right after The Giant: Primis chase a German truck carrying a cryogenic capsule with the Ultimis “Tank” Dempsey inside, crash their giant robot on the way, and ride the gondola up to the castle, where zombies wait for them as a rocket takes off. The map brings two new weapons, the Wrath of the Ancients bow and the Ragnarok DG-4, and brings back the Panzersoldat, Der Wunderfizz and the Rocket Shield.

Characters

The players are Primis, the four heroes of Origins and The Giant. They all look more beaten up here than on the previous map.

The RK5 and the Sheiva, 500 each. In the First Room.

Around the station

750 each, the L-CAR 9 in the tunnel to Mule Kick and in the room above Double Tap, the KRM-262 by Double Tap and on the way to the Trophy Room.

Courtyards

Rocket site and Armory

The VMP for 1300 and Trip Mines for 1000 at the rocket, the Bowie Knife for 3000 by the power switch.

The map has two wonder weapons. The Wrath of the Ancients is a bow earned by feeding three dragons, and each player can turn it into one of four elemental bows. The Ragnarok DG-4, a pair of electric spikes built from three parts, is the Specialist weapon of the map: slammed on the ground it kills everything around, planted it becomes a trap.

Power, Pack-a-Punch and Wunderspheres

The power switch in the Armory with its "turn on the Power" prompt in Der Eisendrache, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The power

The switch is in the Armory, next to a row of generators. It wakes up the perks and opens the Undercroft.

The Pack-a-Punch pieces waiting on the Bastion, ready to be teleported, in Der Eisendrache, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Pack-a-Punch

Its parts wait at three spots, the Undercroft, the Bastion and the rocket launch pad. Send the parts of two spots away and the machine builds itself at the third. It then moves from one spot to another during the game.

A Wundersphere launch pad in Der Eisendrache, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Wunderspheres

Four launch pads that fling a player across the castle for 500 points, once the landing pad at the other end has been switched on. Zombies that step on an active pad die.

The teleporter in its round tunnel in Der Eisendrache, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The teleporter

500 points, between the Undercroft lab and the rocket launch pad. It does not need to be linked first.

Anti-gravity

Four tiles around the pyramid of the Undercroft turn gravity off for a while, so players can run on the walls.

The power, the Pack-a-Punch, the Wunderspheres, the Tram and the traps

Traps

The Death Ray firing electricity at zombies on the Bastion in Der Eisendrache, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Death Ray

1000 points, on the Bastion. A surge of electricity kills every zombie in reach and stuns the Panzersoldat; its cables hurt players too. It also plays a part in the Ragnarok DG-4 and the main quest.

1000 points, in the Upper Courtyard at the church entrance.

Mystery Box

950 points a spin, on six spots, none of them in the station. It holds the Black Ops III arsenal, from the 48 Dredge to the XM-53, with the Ray Gun, Monkey Bombs and Trip Mines.

East side

By the dragon head. A possible starting spot.

West side

In front of an anti-aircraft gun. A possible starting spot.

Bastion

Next to the Death Ray, by the door to the power room.

Teleporter hall

In the hall between the teleporter and the Rocket Test site.

GobbleGums

Eight GobbleGum machines stand in the castle, one of them in the station. Awakening added four Mega GobbleGums, and the map hides a free Mega GobbleGum: take the small plant pot by the Undercroft teleporter, travel back in time, put the pot back on its toolbox, and pick up the grown plant once back in the present. On the ZFRR board, no GobbleGum is used.

Easter egg: My Brother’s Keeper

Richtofen holding up the Summoning Key in the ending of My Brother's Keeper, Der Eisendrache, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The main quest asks Primis to “erase” the Ultimis Dempsey kept in a capsule at the castle, and to purge Group 935 by destroying Griffin Station and the Moon. It can be done solo. It needs one upgraded bow per player, the Ragnarok DG-4 and at least one use of the Death Ray.

  1. Shoot the beacons of the Undercroft teleporter with the plain bow.
  2. Shoot four wisps, sparking objects around the map, with an upgraded bow, one after the other.
  3. Travel back in time through the teleporter, take a canister and fuses, and read the code on Groph’s safe.
  4. Win the memory game on the two terminals, after fitting the fuses to the Death Ray.
  5. Bring the rocket down with the Death Ray, and pick up the Vril Generator next to it.
  6. Fill the Keeper’s tablet with souls at four spots, then open the Moon Pyramid Device it brings back.
  7. Defeat the corrupted Keeper with the Ragnarok DG-4, then charge the Summoning Key to launch the rockets at the Moon.

The reward is every perk of the map for each player and the My Brother’s Keeper achievement.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zm_castle.
  • The map was first announced as “Der Eisendrachen”, which means “The Iron Kite”. Treyarch corrected it, but several posters in the castle still carry the old name.
  • Griffin Castle is based on the real Hohenwerfen Castle, and sits at the same coordinates.
  • The talks between Richtofen and Groph are written after the radios of Moon, where Groph was first heard.
  • In the intro, the giant robot loses its left arm and its visor. In the game, it rests against the mountain in one piece; the room of Mule Kick gives the best view of it.
  • On PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, the zombies are faster and more aggressive.
  • The KRM-262 shows up among the weapons spinning in the Mystery Box, but the Box never gives it.
  • A piece of the Undercroft returns in Revelations, the last map of Black Ops III, and the Multiplayer map Der Schatten is set in the village below the castle.
