World at War is where Zombies starts. Treyarch hid it in the game as a bonus: finish the campaign and Nazi Zombies opens, on a single map, Nacht der Untoten. Each of the three map packs that followed added one more map, and with each one the mode picked up a piece of what it still is: the Perk-a-Cola and the power switch on Verrückt, Hellhounds and the Wunderwaffe DG-2 on Shi No Numa, the Pack-a-Punch and the teleporters on Der Riese.

For this site the important part is what World at War does not have yet. No World at War First Room has a perk that works. There is no Mule Kick, which only arrived with a Black Ops patch, and Quick Revive does nothing for a player on their own. Every run below is played on 100 health, from the first round to the last.

The First Room in World at War

A First Room run keeps every door shut and every debris pile in place, and makes do with whatever the spawn area already holds. In World at War that means two wall weapons, a handful of windows and the rules below.

Zombie health

The same scale as in Black Ops. 150 at round 1, plus 100 every round through round 9, then 10% more every round: 1,683 at round 15, 7,030 at round 30, 47,295 at round 50. In World at War the number grows too large for the engine at round 163, and from then on zombies have the health of round 1.

Twenty-four at once

No more than 24 zombies are on the map together, 25 on Der Riese. In solo, the three maps before Der Riese go further: a round never holds more than 24 zombies in total, whatever its number.

Two hits

A player has 100 health and goes down on the second hit. No starting room holds a Juggernog machine that can be bought, so nothing changes that.

No perk at all

Nacht der Untoten has no machine, Shi No Numa only puts its machines in the huts, Der Riese keeps all of them behind doors, and on Verrückt every machine, Quick Revive included, waits for the power. In World at War, Quick Revive costs 1,500 points in solo too and has no effect on the player who drinks it.

Board income is capped

10 points a plank, 60 for a full window, with the repair points of a round capped at 40 in round 1, rising by 50 a round to 490.

The zombies themselves change from map to map. On Nacht der Untoten they do not reach through the windows, so a boarded window is a safe one. From Verrückt on they hit players through the barriers, and on Verrückt they also run faster than anywhere else in the game: the sprinters of the World at War version, which the Black Ops remaster dropped. Shi No Numa brings the top speed back down. From Der Riese on, the last zombie of a round sprints from round 4, as soon as the second-to-last one dies.

On PC, the World at War boards accept runs played through Plutonium (T4); on console, Xbox and PlayStation 3.

The four First Rooms

Each World at War map has its own leaderboard on ZFRR. The Hub wikis linked below were written for the Black Ops versions of the same four maps: the layout and the wall weapons are the same, the rest is not, and the differences are listed after the table of records.

Nacht der Untoten

The ground-floor room of the bunker, five windows, the Kar98k and the M1A1 Carbine, and nothing else. Leaderboard · Map wiki (Black Ops version)

Verrückt

Two starting rooms either side of an electric door, the Juggernog side and the Quick Revive side, and neither machine works without the power. Ranked by side in solo and with two players, as the whole starting area with three and four. Leaderboard · Map wiki (Black Ops version)

Shi No Numa

The top floor of the main hut, four windows, the Arisaka and the Gewehr 43, Hellhounds every four or five rounds. Leaderboard · Map wiki (Black Ops version)

Der Riese

The courtyard around the mainframe, four barriers, the Kar98k and the Gewehr 43, Hellhounds, and 25 zombies at once. Leaderboard · Map wiki (Black Ops version)

On Verrückt, which side a game starts on is not a choice. In solo and with two players the whole team spawns in one room; with three or four, the game splits the team between the two, and with three the lone player lands on a random side.

Two solo numbers stand apart: 601 on Nacht der Untoten, held by the player Tank Dempsey, and 168 on Shi No Numa, against 40 to 46 everywhere else and nothing above 40 in co-op. In World at War, past a certain round every round lasts about the same time: in solo, the maps before Der Riese never send more than 24 zombies in a round, so a run that holds that pace can go on for hundreds of rounds. Nacht der Untoten and Shi No Numa add zombies at normal speed. Verrückt has the same 24-zombie rounds but stays at 40 and 41, with sprinters and zombies that hit through the boards.

What the Black Ops wikis do not say

Nacht der Untoten

No Mule Kick, so the starting room has no machine at all. No Carpenter power-up either, and no song: Undone and its three red barrels were added in Black Ops. The Mystery Box holds World War II weapons and the Ray Gun, without the Thundergun or the Monkey Bomb.

Verrückt

The Quick Revive side has the Springfield on the wall at 200 points, where Black Ops put the Kar98k. Quick Revive cannot be bought before the power in solo, so neither side has a working perk. The zombies sprint, and there is no Carpenter.

Shi No Numa

No Mule Kick in the spawn room, no Carpenter, no Monkey Bomb. In solo a round never goes above 24 zombies, where Black Ops makes the total grow every round. The four huts each get a machine drawn at random when they are opened, and the four perks are all there is.

Der Riese

No Mule Kick. The last zombie of a round sprints straight away instead of keeping its pace until something provokes it. The Wunderwaffe DG-2 can, through a bug, lower a player’s maximum health for good when its blast catches them, most visibly with Juggernog; Black Ops fixed that.

All four

The Mystery Box holds World War II weapons, not the Cold War-era guns Black Ops added, and Nacht der Untoten and Verrückt are played as Marines, where Black Ops puts in Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo and Richtofen. The wall weapons of the four starting rooms are the ones described in the wikis, except the Springfield above.

The maps

One map with the game, then one in each of the three map packs, sold on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and free on PC. Black Ops brought all four back later, first in its Hardened and Prestige editions, then in the Rezurrection pack.

Dates are the first release on any platform. On PC, Shi No Numa came on July 17, 2009 with the 1.5 update, and Der Riese on September 18. Nacht der Untoten is unlocked by finishing the campaign, watching the credits or going online. The links in the table go to the Black Ops versions on the Hub.

The crews

T

The Marines of Nacht der Untoten

Four survivors of the plane crash, never named, their appearance drawn at random, and silent.

T

The Marines of Verrückt

Four Marines again, with voice lines for the first time. The series’ later timeline names them, with “Tank” Dempsey among them.

D

Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo and Richtofen

“Tank” Dempsey, Nikolai Belinski, Takeo Masaki and Edward Richtofen arrive on Shi No Numa, each with a personality of their own, handed out at random at the start of a game. They stay on Der Riese and carry the story through Black Ops, where they are known today as Ultimis.

Perks

Four Perk-a-Colas, all introduced on Verrückt, and no limit on how many a player drinks, since there are only four. Nacht der Untoten has none. On Verrückt they need the power; Shi No Numa has no power switch, and each hut gets a machine drawn at random the moment it is opened; Der Riese puts them in fixed spots and needs the power again.

PerkCostEffect in World at War
Juggernog2,500Health from 100 to 250. On Verrückt and Shi No Numa it works differently: more maximum health and 40 health regained every half-second, only 3 during a Hellhound round on Shi No Numa.
Quick Revive1,500Revives a teammate in half the time. No effect in solo, at the same price.
Speed Cola3,000Reloads 50% faster. The board-repair animation speeds up too, not the repair itself.
Double Tap Root Beer2,00033% more rate of fire.

Going prone in front of a perk machine on Der Riese pays a few points, shown as 20 or 30. The game files hold two more perks that never shipped, Candolier and Amm-O-Matic, the second with a staircase on Der Riese that leads nowhere.

Wonder Weapons

None of them can be had in a First Room: they all come from the Mystery Box, and no starting room in World at War holds one. The Pack-a-Punch, which upgrades a weapon for 5,000 points, exists only on Der Riese, behind a shutter that opens once the power is on and the three teleporters are linked.

Ray Gun

On all four maps, from Nacht der Untoten on. 1,000 damage a direct hit plus splash, one shot a zombie until round 18 to 22, 20 rounds in the gun and 160 in reserve. The splash hurts its user too.

Wunderwaffe DG-2

Debut on Shi No Numa, back on Der Riese. A bolt of lightning that kills up to ten zombies a shot, three charges and fifteen in reserve, and only one player can own it at a time. Fired too close, it hurts the shooter.

Monkey Bomb

Debut on Der Riese. A wind-up monkey that draws the zombies to it with its tune, then explodes.

The Ray Gun began as a side project of Treyarch artist Max Porter and went into the Mystery Box during playtests. It is also hidden in the campaign mission Little Resistance, where four statues rise from the beach holding it.

Points

The scale Black Ops and Black Ops III kept was set here. Two World at War quirks: Double Points does not double the Nuke or the Carpenter, and the Carpenter only exists on Der Riese.

Songs and secrets

Three maps hide a song; Nacht der Untoten only got one in Black Ops. Until Moon, the song that plays on a map’s Game Over screen is the hidden song of the next map, and the chain starts here.

Der Riese also hides the Fly Trap: shoot a panel in the Left Corridor with a Pack-a-Punched weapon, and Samantha starts a game of hide and seek, three objects to find and shoot across the map. Radios hidden on Shi No Numa and Der Riese carry pieces of the story, among them how Samantha’s dog became the first Hellhound.

Trivia

  • Nacht der Untoten was a secret. Treyarch hid it in the game, and it only became a mode of its own, Nazi Zombies, after that.
  • Not every version has it. The Wii and Nintendo DS versions of World at War have no Zombies mode, and neither does Final Fronts on PlayStation 2. Fandom adds that German versions do not have it either.
  • Verrückt is the only split spawn of the era, and one of only two in the whole series, with Dead of the Night in Black Ops 4. The electric door is bulletproof, but grenades go through a window in it.
  • Shi No Numa was the first map without Nazi zombies: its undead are soldiers of the Imperial Japanese Army. Its crawlers move upright instead of on their stomachs.
  • Zombies moved to the phone in 2009. Call of Duty: Zombies came out on iOS on November 16, 2009 with Nacht der Untoten, and added Verrückt, Shi No Numa and Der Riese later.
  • The Thompson costs 1,200 on Nacht der Untoten, though its chalk outline says 1,500. The Black Ops version fixed the sign.
