Black Ops III is the game that gathered everything. Six new maps, a remake of Der Riese, and then Zombies Chronicles, which rebuilt eight maps from World at War, Black Ops and Black Ops II on the new engine. With fourteen round-based maps it is the largest Zombies game on this site, and the only one where Nacht der Untoten and Origins can be played side by side.

For this site it is also the game with the most powerful tool ever put in a starting room: the GobbleGum machine. Most of the Black Ops III boards are played without it.

The First Room in Black Ops III

The arithmetic has not moved since World at War: 150 health at round 1, plus 100 a round through round 9, then 10% more every round, with no ceiling; 24 zombies on the map at most; the same points for hits, kills and planks. What changed is around it.

No GobbleGums

Twelve of the fourteen boards are played with no GobbleGum at all. The one exception is Crawl Space, allowed in co-op to keep a crawler alive between rounds. Shadows of Evil and The Giant have a single board each.

Every round in full

No glitch, no exploit, and no shortcut through the round counter. On Shadows of Evil that rules out shooting the Shadowman at the start, which would skip straight to round 5, 10, then 15, with 16,000 points on top.

Quick Revive

Still 500 in solo, still three times. It stands in the starting area of Shadows of Evil, Der Eisendrache, Gorod Krovi and Revelations. On The Giant the perk machines use Der Riese’s spots, none of them in the courtyard. On Zetsubou No Shima it is past the bunker door in co-op, and in solo a plane drops it somewhere else on the map at the start of round 2.

Zombies come back to you

In Black Ops II a damaged zombie you walked away from disappeared. In Black Ops III, if you move far enough from it, it respawns closer to you, looking whole but keeping its lost health.

No dive

The slide replaced the dolphin dive, so PhD Flopper is gone from the game. Widow’s Wine takes its place on the remastered Ascension, Shangri-La, Moon and Origins.

The remasters keep their machines where they always were, with one change that matters here: on Shi No Numa, Quick Revive replaces Mule Kick in the spawn room. Nacht der Untoten still has no Quick Revive in its starting room. Each Chronicles map also gained a GobbleGum machine in its starting area and a Der Wunderfizz somewhere behind the doors.

Revelations is the trap of the list. Its First Room is not the Nacht der Untoten fragment people expect: the game starts in Agartha, in front of The House, in a long, open area with the RK5, the Sheiva, Quick Revive and a Corruption Engine, and two doors, 500 points towards Origins and 750 towards Shangri-La. The Nacht der Untoten building is another part of the map, behind the doors.

The fourteen First Rooms

Every Black Ops III map has its own board on ZFRR, kept apart from the original version of the same map: the room is the same, the game around it is not. For the remasters, the Hub wiki is the one of the original map.

The maps

Each map pack came out on PlayStation 4 first, and on Xbox One and PC about a month later. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions only ever got Shadows of Evil, The Giant and Der Eisendrache.

Zombies Chronicles came out on PlayStation 4 on May 16, 2017, then on Xbox One and PC in June. It cost $29.99 and was not part of the Season Pass. Beside the fourteen maps sits Dead Ops Arcade II: Cyber’s Avengening, the top-down sequel to the Black Ops mode, on PS4, Xbox One and PC only.

GobbleGum

A machine that sells one-off effects, from a pack of five chosen before the game. A player holds one at a time. It is the largest change Black Ops III made to the mode, and the reason most of its boards ban it.

Classic

Unlimited, unlocked by rank. Small effects, such as Coagulant, which lengthens the time before you bleed out, or Stock Option, which takes ammo from the reserve instead of the magazine.

Mega

Limited uses, made from Liquid Divinium in Dr. Monty’s Factory. Perkaholic gives every perk on the map, Shopping Free makes every purchase free for a minute, Round Robbin ends the round, Near Death Experience keeps Quick Revive in solo for three rounds.

The price

At launch a single machine was active at a time, one gum per round, 500 points. The March 21, 2016 update switched on every machine. Since Zombies Chronicles, the first gum of each round is free and up to three can be bought, the next ones dearer as the rounds go on.

The crews

T

The Shadows of Evil four

Nero Blackstone, Jessica Rose, Jack Vincent and Floyd Campbell, brought to Morg City by the Shadowman.

P

Primis

Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo and Richtofen as they are after Origins. They play The Giant, Der Eisendrache, Zetsubou No Shima, Gorod Krovi and Revelations, and the story continues in Black Ops 4.

U

Ultimis

The Black Ops four, met by Primis along the way and playable again in the World at War and Black Ops maps of Zombies Chronicles.

Perks and Pack-a-Punch

One new perk, Widow’s Wine, 4,000 points: a zombie that hits you sets off a web that traps the ones around you, and grenades become sticky web grenades. Double Tap becomes Double Tap II, which also doubles bullet damage. The four-perk limit stays; GobbleGums such as Perkaholic and On the House go past it.

The first Pack-a-Punch still costs 5,000 points. Black Ops III adds Alternate Ammo Types: punching a weapon again gives it, or re-rolls, an effect such as Dead Wire or Blast Furnace.

Wonder Weapons

Apothicon Servant

Shadows of Evil. Built from parts taken from the Apothicon forces; fires a black hole that pulls zombies in, then explodes.

Annihilator

The Giant. The reward of its side quest.

Wrath of the Ancients

Der Eisendrache. A bow, upgraded into four elemental versions.

KT-4

Zetsubou No Shima. Built, and upgraded into the Masamune.

GKZ-45 Mk3

Gorod Krovi. A GKZ-45 in one hand, a Ray Gun Mark III in the other.

Path of Sorrows

Revelations. A sword, earned only after A Better Tomorrow, the game’s final easter egg; the map also brings back the Thundergun and the Ragnarok DG-4.

Trivia

  • The Giant is named after the map it remakes: Der Riese is German for “The Giant”.
  • Wall running survives in two set pieces. It shows up in the anti-gravity sections of Der Eisendrache and of the Der Eisendrache part of Revelations, where it leads to a free perk.
  • The Mystery Box is out of reach in the First Rooms of the six new maps: the Box moves only once used, and none of them starts it in the spawn area.
  • Fifteen or fourteen: lists that give Black Ops III fifteen Zombies maps count Dead Ops Arcade II. Round-based, there are fourteen.
