The Fly Trap

The teddy bear holding a Juggernog bottle and an upgraded M1911 in a cage, one of the Fly Trap objects in Der Riese, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The best-known Easter egg of Der Riese, often called the first real Easter egg of Zombies. Samantha Maxis challenges the players to a game of hide and seek. In World at War it earned the achievement Elevate Your Senses; in the Black Ops version, whose scripts have the achievement switched off, it only gives Samantha’s lines.

  1. Get a Pack-a-Punched weapon: power on, three teleporters linked, 5000 points at the Pack-a-Punch.
  2. Shoot the panel: from the left-hand barrier of the starting courtyard (back to the Pack-a-Punch), look down the alley at the pillar in the middle. A small control panel hangs on it. Shoot it with the upgraded weapon; a grenade thrown while holding the upgraded weapon also works.
  3. Watch the objects fly: eight objects rise from the rubble around the pillar, form a ring and fly off across the map. Samantha giggles, then: “I want to play a game… Let’s play hide and seek!”
  4. Find and shoot the three hiding spots, in any order and with any weapon.

The Bowie teddy bear

A teddy bear holding a Bowie Knife, in a window high up on the building above the M1A1 Carbine.

The cage teddy bear

A teddy bear with a Juggernog bottle and an upgraded M1911, in a cage next to the M1897 Trench Gun.

The furnace monkey

A Monkey Bomb holding a Stielhandgranate and a Molotov cocktail, inside the furnace by the Thompson in the Automobile Garage.

After the first object, “Yay, you found one!”; after the second, “Wow, you found another one!”; after the third, in an angry voice, “You win… GAME OVER!”. The game goes on. In the Black Ops version, one of the teddy bears can be invisible from some angles; shooting where it should be still counts.

Beauty of Annihilation

The song of the map. Three jars of green liquid, with brains and spinal cords inside, glow around the factory. Hold the use button on each one, in any order:

  1. Two jars in the Animal Testing Lab and its hall, on the way to Teleporter A: one on a desk, the other on top of some shelves.
  2. The third jar in the small side room of Chemical Testing, by Teleporter B, on a desk next to the barrier.

The last jar starts “Beauty of Annihilation”, by Kevin Sherwood and Elena Siegman, for about four minutes. A piece of the same song plays at the end of every Hellhound round.

Mister Monkey

The open furnace of the Automobile Garage in Der Riese, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Throw a Monkey Bomb into the furnace of the Automobile Garage with the special grenade button. Samantha shouts: “Why are you so cruel to Mister Monkey? Mister Monkey just wanted to play!”

The radios

Hand-held radios and larger phonographs tell what happened in the factory: the teleporter tests, Fluffy, and Richtofen’s betrayal of Maxis and Samantha. Hold the use button on each one to play it.

Starting courtyard

A small radio beside a barrel, on the right of the stairs that go down. Maxis tries to control test subjects that came back through the teleporters. The only one in the First Room.

Main Factory tunnel

At the end of the underground passage by Teleporter C, under Quick Revive. Maxis talks about the budget of the Wunderwaffe, the teleporters and the need for more Element 115.

Animal Testing Lab

Above a door across from the M1897 Trench Gun. Maxis and Samantha, and her dog Fluffy.

Chemical Testing

Look down at the ladder by the left-hand vat, the one with legs hanging over it. A soldier’s last message.

The phonographs

On a shelf by the stairs near Teleporter C, on a tipped-over filing cabinet above the furnace, and in an empty furnace under Teleporter A.

Other secrets

Maxis’s office

Above the barrier in the Quick Revive room, a plate reads “L. Maxis M.D. Office”.

The notice board

On the way into the Animal Testing Lab, photos of the lighthouse and ship of Call of the Dead, the rocket of Ascension and Paris, the first idea for Moon.

The blackboards

In the Animal Testing Lab and the hall towards Teleporter A, “H. Yena, Edward I know it was you”, and under “Never again Sam”, seven symbols that spell Treyarch.

“Embrace the trinity”

Beside the mainframe, “Embrace the trinity and true power will be yours”, a hint at the three teleporter links.

The teddy bear shadow

From one of the barriers of the starting courtyard, the shadow of a teddy bear holding a knife shows on a wall.

Griffin Station

Orange dots in a circle on the Moon in the sky, read as the base of the map Moon.

Help and SOS

“help” spelled in sandbags on a roof, and “SOS” on another.

Children singing

Near Juggernog and near the power generator, a nursery rhyme can be heard when the map is quiet; at the top of the stairs from the Automobile Garage, Samantha crying.

First Room

With the doors closed, the Fly Trap, the song and the furnace are out of reach. The spawn radio, the “Embrace the trinity” writing and the teddy bear shadow can all be found without leaving the starting courtyard, and the Fly Trap panel itself can be seen from the left-hand barrier, though nothing in the First Room can trigger it.
