The First Room

The starting alley of Easy Street with the Beast pedestal, crates and the fire escape, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

On ZFRR, the Shadows of Evil First Room is the starting alley of Easy Street, the narrow back street of Morg City where the four players meet after the intro. It is a wet, cobbled alley between brick walls, cluttered with crates and old trucks, with a fire escape above its gate. The players start with 500 points, a Bloodhound revolver, the knife and frag grenades.

The alley has a single door that can be bought: the folding gate to the Junction, sold for 500 points. In a First Room game it stays closed. A staircase also leads up to Nero’s apartment, but it cannot be bought: it only opens from a fuse box upstairs, shocked by the Beast. There is no power switch on this map. Each machine that needs power has its own fuse box, which a player has to shock in Beast form.

RK5 burst pistol, Gunsmith render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

RK5

500 points, a three-round burst pistol, on a wall of the alley.

Sheiva semi-automatic rifle, Gunsmith render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Sheiva

500 points, a semi-automatic rifle, on a wall of the alley.

Those are the only two wall buys of the alley. The rest of a First Room arsenal comes from the Harvest Pods.

The Quick Revive machine by the gate of the starting alley, sold 500 points in solo, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Quick Revive

The only perk of the alley, to the right of the RK5. It starts without power: a player has to shock its fuse box in Beast form first. 500 points in solo, 1500 in co-op.

The Beast pedestal with its purple flame in the starting alley, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The Beast pedestal

A chalice with a purple flame against a wall of the alley. Holding the use button on it turns the player into the Beast.

The Summoning Key in its broken crate on the truck by the Junction gate, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The Summoning Key

A chained crate on the back of the truck to the left of the RK5. The Beast breaks it open with a melee, and the Key it holds is needed for every ritual of the map.

A green Harvest Pod on a wall, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Harvest Pods

Apothicon pods that grow on the walls and swell from green to red, then purple, as the rounds go by. Opened with the Fumigator, they give weapons, power-ups, points, or a zombie.

The Fumigator

One spawns in the alley, at one of three spots: on a box to the right of the Beast pedestal, on the back of the truck in front of Quick Revive, or in a metal window grate to the left of the stairs to Nero’s apartment. It is needed to open the Harvest Pods.

The round skip

At the very start of the game, the Shadowman stands on the fire escape above the gate. Shooting him skips the game to round 5, 10 or 15.

No Mystery Box

None of the seven Box spots is in the alley.

Doors closed, the alley still sees the round-based enemies of the map. The first Margwa comes on round 8, and the next ones every five or six rounds. The first Parasite round is round 5 or 6 and the first Insanity Elemental round is round 9 or 10; both come back every few rounds after that.

The Shadows of Evil leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door.

No GobbleGums

Neither Classic nor Mega GobbleGums are allowed.

No round skip

Shooting the Shadowman is not allowed.

Patching

Patching the Locus in the pods is allowed, and so is patching the drop in the door.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded, and each player shows their gum loadout before, during or after the game.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

The Beast, the alley and the districts of Morg City

Overview

Shadows of Evil is the Zombies map of the base game of Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The mission briefing sums it up: “Take to the streets of Morg City to combat the undead. Embrace the curse to uncover its mysteries.” The map brought the Beast, GobbleGum, the Margwa, the Parasite, the Insanity Elemental, the Apothicon Servant, the Li’l Arnie, the Rocket Shield and the perk Widow’s Wine.

Morg City is a 1940s noir city of neon signs, rain and jazz. The Shadowman brands four sinners with the Mark of the Beast and drags them into a nightmare version of their city. He promises them redemption if they confess their sins, but what he really wants is the Summoning Key, locked in a crate in the alley where they start.

Characters

The four playable characters each committed a crime in the intro. Each of them has a ritual site on the map, where a person close to them is sacrificed.

Enemies

A three-headed Margwa, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Margwas

Three-headed tentacled monsters. A head can only be damaged while its mouth is open and glowing, and each head gives 500 points. Its slam attack downs a player without Juggernog and breaks a Rocket Shield. It ignores Insta-Kill and Nuke, and each head destroyed releases a Parasite.

A yellow Parasite in flight, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Parasites

Flying creatures that spit a yellow liquid. They have their own special rounds, like the Hellhounds, and the last one killed drops a Max Ammo.

An Insanity Elemental with its glowing mouths, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Insanity Elementals

Balls of flesh with glowing mouths that fall from the sky and explode on contact. A red mist marks where one is about to land, and shooting the mist kills it before it drops.

Zombies

The dead of Morg City.

Keepers

Corrupted spirits that fight alongside the zombies while a ritual is running.

After their first special rounds, Parasites and Insanity Elementals can also appear during normal rounds. The first Margwa killed always drops the Margwa Heart, one of the three parts of the Apothicon Servant.

Perks

Every perk machine of the map starts without power and has a fuse box beside it, to be shocked in Beast form. Juggernog, Speed Cola and Double Tap switch places every game between the three districts.

In the Junction, a broken bottle lies in front of each district gate. Its colour tells which perk is behind: red for Juggernog, green for Speed Cola, orange for Double Tap.

Weapons

Every game starts with a Bloodhound revolver, the knife and frag grenades. The walls sell eleven weapons, the Trip Mine and the Bowie Knife, two of them in the starting alley:

Easy Street

The RK5 and the Sheiva, 500 each. In the First Room.

Junction

The L-CAR 9 and the KRM-262, 750 each.

The Apothicon Servant, first-person model, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Apothicon Servant

The wonder weapon of the map, built from a Margwa Heart, a Margwa Tentacle and Xenomatter. It fires a purple black hole that swallows the zombies whatever the round. It cannot be Pack-a-Punched on this map.

A Li'l Arnie jar held before the throw, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Li’l Arnie

A tactical grenade from the Box, a jar holding a small Apothicon that grows when thrown and kills the zombies around it. It can be upgraded through a side quest.

The Rocket Shield in first-person view, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Rocket Shield

Built from three parts, one in each district. It blocks attacks from behind and has a rocket boost that charges through the zombies.

An Apothicon Sword in first-person view, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Apothicon Sword

The Specialist weapon, earned in the main quest and upgraded into a Keeper sword.

Every weapon, its price and its place

The Apothicon Servant and the Li’l Arnies

The Beast

The four characters carry the Mark of the Beast. At a pedestal with a purple flame, a player turns into the Beast for 25 seconds: a tentacled form that zombies ignore, which can shock fuse boxes, break chained doors and crates with a melee, grapple up to ledges and revive teammates. In solo a player can hold up to three Beast uses, in co-op only one, and each new round gives one back.

The Beast opens most of the map: the perk machines, the staircases of the districts, the doors of the ritual rooms and the Rift portals to the Underground.

Rituals and Pack-a-Punch

Pack-a-Punch is locked behind five rituals. With the Summoning Key from the alley, the players find each character’s ritual item with the Beast, place it on the altar of that character’s ritual site and survive the Keepers until the sacrifice gives a Gateworm. With the four Gateworms, a fifth ritual in the Sacred Place of the Underground opens the Apothicon Rift Stone, and the Pack-a-Punch portal behind it.

Rift portals

One in each district, behind a door that only the Beast can break. They lead to the Underground.

Mystery Box

950 points a spin, on seven possible spots. It starts at one of the three marked as possible starting spots.

End of the canal

In the Canal District. Possible starting spot.

Below the Ruby Rabbit

In the Canal District.

Footlight perk spot

Next to the perk machine of the Footlight District. Possible starting spot.

Footlight station

Near the stairs of the Tram station.

Waterfront perk spot

Below the perk machine of the Waterfront District. Possible starting spot.

Waterfront high street

Near the Tram station.

Underground

In the subway station, next to the Apothicon Swords.

The Box holds the Ray Gun, the Li’l Arnie and, once it has been built, the Apothicon Servant.

GobbleGum

Shadows of Evil is the map that brought GobbleGum to Zombies. The machines stand in the Junction, in each of the three districts and in the Underground, but none in the starting alley. At launch only one machine worked at a time and moved like the Mystery Box; since the update of March 21, 2016, all of them work. The ZFRR board for this map is a no-gum board, neither Classic nor Mega, and each player shows their gum loadout on video to prove it.

Easter egg: Apocalypse Averted

The main quest comes in two parts. The first, Apocalypse Ascendant, is the five rituals that open Pack-a-Punch, with the achievement The Beginning of the End. The second, Apocalypse Averted, turns against the Shadowman. The boss fight can be done with fewer players, but the final step and the ending only trigger with four players.

The statue holding the Apothicon Swords and eggs in the Underground, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The Apothicon Swords

Three symbols seen from the Tram open a wall of the Underground with four swords and four eggs. Each egg is charged at four statues, then turned into a sword.

The Shadowman behind his shield in the Pack-a-Punch room, Shadows of Evil, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Capturing the Shadowman

In the Pack-a-Punch room, the Keepers break his shield and the players trap him in the Summoning Key.

The Keeper swords

Each player charges an Arch-Ovum at four ritual circles, each one guarded by Margwas, to upgrade their sword.

The flag

A flag found in Nero’s apartment is defended at two spots in each district, then brought to each ritual site to turn the four spirits into Keepers.

Averting the apocalypse

With the Tram and three players in Beast form, the giant Gateworm is destroyed and the Keepers shoot down the giant Apothicon over the city.

Secrets

Snakeskin Boots

Three wooden radios around the map play the song by Jack Wall, sung by Rick Riso.

Cold Hard Cash

Three parts of a microphone, brought to the stage of the Black Lace Burlesque, play the song sung by Antonia Bennett.

The Shadowman round skip

Shooting him at the start of the game skips to round 5, 10 or 15, with bonus points. Not allowed on the ZFRR board.

Sal’s laundry ticket

A grenade timed to burst by the ticket in the laundry just outside the alley gives 500 points.

The Goddard Apparatus

Twelve shield charges in a row, each through at least ten zombies, upgrade the Rocket Shield.
