The First Room
On ZFRR, the Shangri-La First Room is the starting area in front of the temple, the stone courtyard at the foot of the stairs that lead up to the Pack-a-Punch. Dempsey, Nikolai, Takeo and Richtofen appear there at the start of every game, and the game treats the whole courtyard as a single starting zone. Two piles of debris close it: one towards the waterfall and the Mud-Pit Maze, the other towards the tunnels and the Mine Cart. Both lead on to the power room, and B2’s First Room rule is the same as everywhere: opening them is not allowed. Zombies climb in through the boarded windows around the courtyard.
The room sells two weapons, both at 500 points: the M14, near the debris to the Mine Cart, and the Olympia, near the debris to the waterfall. Quick Revive always stands here, on the middle wall; every other perk machine is placed at random behind the doors. Every game starts with the M1911, the knife and frag grenades. Clearing debris here costs 750 points, and Black Ops has no solo discount on doors.
Quick Revive
In solo, it is switched on from the start, costs 500 points and revives you on your own, up to three times. In co-op it costs 1500 and waits for the power, so it stays off for the whole game.
No power
The power comes from two water levers in the power room, past either pile of debris. Without it, the Pack-a-Punch stairs never rise, and the four eclipse buttons by Quick Revive, the first step of the Easter egg, stay dead.
The monkeys
Zombie Monkeys sit on the walls of the temple stairs. When a power-up drops, one runs for it. Kill it before it hits you to earn 500 points; let it carry the power-up and it cycles through the other drops until you shoot it.
Perks from the monkeys
When a monkey steals a Max Ammo that dropped from a zombie, a Random Perk Bottle appears in its cycle for a quarter of a second. Shot at that moment, it gives a perk the player does not have yet. It is the only way to get perks other than Quick Revive with the doors closed.
Special zombies
A Shrieker can appear from round 4 and a Napalm Zombie from round 5, never both in the same round. The Napalm’s blast kills a player standing close to it, even with Juggernog when very close.
No Mystery Box
The Box starts either in the cave by the AK-74u or at the waterfall. A spot in the starting area exists, but the Box never starts there, and the Fire Sale that would light it only drops once the Box has moved.
The records standing today, solo to four players, are shown next to this article, and the Shangri-La leaderboard lists every run with its video. Shangri-La has a single ranking, played under the First Room rules kept on B2 for Black Ops:
Doors closed
Opening doors, here the two piles of debris, is not allowed, and neither are out-of-bounds glitches.
Restricted graphic content
In B2’s fifth First Room vote (2023), Shangri-La was the only Black Ops map where players voted for a separate category for games played with restricted graphic content; the other maps allowed it. The general rule only lets graphic content be changed in solo, between games.
Fire and fog
Removing the fog, foliage, smoke or fire is not allowed, which includes the flames of the Napalm Zombie.
Mule Kick
Disabling it is allowed in solo and not in co-op (2025 vote).
Platforms
Steam, Plutonium, BGamer, Xbox and PlayStation are allowed, the Wii is not. On Plutonium, the anticheat text must stay visible; disconnecting, reconnecting and pausing in co-op are allowed. Fast knifing is allowed; fast ray, rapid fire and fast grenades are not.
For the highest rounds, ZFRR also keeps Verition’s Shangri-La pre-flops table, which gives the number of flops to prepare and to use, round by round, from round 30 to 45.
