The First Room

The Lobby of Kino der Toten, the spawn room, with zombies coming in at the start of a game, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

On ZFRR, the Kino der Toten First Room is the Lobby, the entrance hall of the theater where the players spawn. It is a two-level room: a ground floor with a bar, and a balcony reached by a staircase on each side. The players start on the ground floor, around the teleporter pad in the middle of the room, with 500 points, an M1911, the knife and frag grenades.

Three doors lead out, all closed in a First Room game: one under the left staircase, to the Lower Hall and its fire trap; one at the top of the right staircase, to the Upper Hall; and the large door straight ahead, under the balcony, which leads into the theater. That last one cannot be bought: it only opens when the power is turned on, and the power switch is backstage, at the far end of the map. Doors closed, the power stays off for the whole game.

Olympia

500 points, on the wall of the ground floor.

M14 semi-automatic rifle, menu icon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

M14

500 points, on the wall of the balcony.

Those are the only two wall buys of the Lobby. The Lobby has four barriers, one per player in a four-player game, and they are the only windows of the First Room.

The Quick Revive machine in the Lobby of Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Quick Revive

The only perk of the Lobby, by the bar. In solo it costs 500 points and works without the power, so it can be bought from round 1, up to three times; after the third, the machine leaves the map. In co-op it costs 1500 and needs the power, so it stays off.

The mainframe

The pad in the middle of the room, where players land when they come back from the teleporter. It does nothing while the power is off.

The Mystery Box spot

A Box location sits on the balcony, but the Box never starts there, and with the doors closed nobody can reach the Box to move it. The Fire Sale, which would bring a Box to every spot, only drops once the Box has moved. In practice the First Room has no Mystery Box.

No trap

The fire trap is in the Lower Hall, and the electric traps all need the power.

The first meteor rock

One of the three rocks of the 115 song is in the Lobby. The other two are behind doors.

With the power off, the Crawler zombies of the map do not come: according to the Black Ops version, they only start to spawn, from holes in the ceiling, once the power is on. A First Room game faces normal zombies and the Hellhound rounds, whose last dog always drops a Max Ammo.

B2, whose rules ZFRR follows, has no Kino der Toten rule of its own today: the map uses the general Black Ops First Room rules, and the Kino der Toten leaderboard keeps a single board. The rules that matter most on this map:

Doors closed

Opening any door is not allowed, so the power is never turned on.

Platforms

Steam, Plutonium, BGamer, Xbox and PlayStation are allowed; the Wii version is not.

Glitched Nova spawns

In B2’s first First Room vote, in April 2020, a game where Crawler zombies spawn by a glitch was voted allowed on Kino der Toten.

Graphic content

B2’s fifth vote, in 2023, allowed reduced graphic content on Kino der Toten. The general rule now lets players change it in solo only, and only between games.

No fog removal

Removing the fog is not allowed, nor removing smoke, fire or foliage.

Fixed backspeed

Allowed in solo, not in co-op.

Fast ray and rapid fire

Both forbidden; fast knifing is allowed.

The Lobby and every other room, door by door

Overview

The theater of Kino der Toten seen from the seats, the stage at the back, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Kino der Toten, German for “Theater of the Dead”, is the fifth Zombies map overall and the first of Call of Duty: Black Ops. It is on the disc and open from the start. The level description sums it up: “An abandoned cinema packed with swarms of Crawler Zombies and fiery traps.” The map brought the Crawler zombies, the fire trap and a new wonder weapon, the Thundergun.

The story picks up right after Der Riese: the Wunderwaffe DG-2 overloaded the teleporter, and the four heroes were thrown through time and space into Group 935’s Kino facility, an abandoned theater, in 1963. Richtofen lost his diary on the way. The map was first meant to be a World at War map pack, but it came too close to the release of Modern Warfare 2 and was kept for Black Ops.

Characters

The four heroes of Shi No Numa and Der Riese return. Their painted portraits hang in the Upper Hall, the room of Mule Kick.

Enemies

A horde of zombies with glowing eyes in Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Zombies

The undead soldiers of the theater. They come in through the barriers and, in some rooms, drop through holes in the roof.

A Hellhound with a glowing red eye in Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Hellhounds

Special rounds of fire dogs, every four or five rounds, announced by fog and lightning. The last one always drops a Max Ammo.

A Crawler zombie on all fours, its mouth wide open, in Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Crawler zombies

Mutated zombies on all fours, which arrive through the ceiling once the power is on. Killed by bullets, they burst into a cloud of green gas that blurs the view; a knife, a trap, an explosive or a wonder weapon kills them without the gas.

Perks

Every machine needs the power, except Quick Revive in solo.

The Juggernog machine in the theater of Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Juggernog

2500. In the theater, on the left through the main doors, next to the Bowie Knife.

The Speed Cola machine in the Foyer of Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Speed Cola

3000. In the Foyer, near the MP40.

The Double Tap Root Beer machine in the Alley of Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Double Tap Root Beer

2000. At the southern end of the Alley, next to a barrier.

Quick Revive

1500, or 500 in solo. In the Lobby, by the bar. In the First Room.

Mule Kick

4000. In the Upper Hall, next to the door to the Foyer. Added by a 2011 update, and only present when the game is connected online.

Weapons

Every game starts with an M1911, the knife and frag grenades. Twelve things are bought off the walls, two of them in the Lobby:

Lobby rifles

The Olympia downstairs and the M14 upstairs, 500 each. In the First Room.

The halls

The MPL in the Lower Hall and the PM63 in the Upper Hall, 1000 each.

Foyer and dressing room

The MP40 for 1000 and the Stakeout for 1500 in the Foyer, the MP5K for 1000 in the Dressing Room.

Alley and stage

The AK-74u for 1200 in the Alley, the M16 for 1200 and Claymores for 1000 on the stage.

Theater and projector room

The Bowie Knife for 3000 by Juggernog, and frag grenades for 250 next to the Pack-a-Punch.

The Mystery Box holds the rest of the Black Ops arsenal, with the Ray Gun, the Monkey Bomb and the Thundergun, a cannon of compressed air that throws whole hordes back and kills most of them.

Every weapon, its price and its place

Power, teleporter and Pack-a-Punch

The power switch is backstage, next to the M16. Pulling it draws back the stage curtain, opens the Lobby door to the theater, starts the projector, switches on the perks and traps, and lets the Crawler zombies in.

The teleporter pad on the side of the stage of Kino der Toten, its blue ring lit, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The teleporter

On the side of the stage. It is free, but it must first be linked to the mainframe in the Lobby, and linked again after each trip.

The Pack-a-Punch machine in the projector room of Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The projector room

The teleporter sends players to a room above the theater, where the Pack-a-Punch upgrades a weapon for 5000 points. Zombies cannot get in, and everyone is sent back after 30 seconds.

The random rooms

On the way back, players sometimes spend a few seconds in one of four other rooms, then land on the mainframe in the Lobby.

The teleporter, the projector room and the four random rooms

Traps and turrets

The fire trap burning zombies in the Lower Hall of Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Fire trap

1000 points, a fire pit in the middle of the Lower Hall. It burns any zombie that walks through it for about 45 seconds, and hurts players too. Kino der Toten was the first map with one.

The stage turret firing, its red lights on, in Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Turrets

Two automatic machine guns, 1500 points each, one on a table by the Foyer bar and one at the end of the stage.

Electric traps

1000 points each, four of them: at the Lobby door to the theater, between the two parts of the Upper Hall, between the theater and the Dressing Room, and in the room above the Alley. Walking into one downs a player without Juggernog.

All of them need the power.

Mystery Box

The Mystery Box on a Box spot of Kino der Toten, the chalk map on the wall behind it, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

950 points a spin, on nine possible spots, one per area of the map. A teddy bear sends it elsewhere. The Lobby spot, on the balcony, is never the starting one. At every spot, a chalk map of the theater on the wall marks where the Box is with a green light, once the power is on.

Lobby

On the balcony. Never the starting spot.

Upper Hall

In front of the door.

Lower Hall

Near the door to the Alley.

Alley

In the middle, under the roof the zombies jump from.

Back room

The room above the Alley, next to a window.

The other four

The Foyer, the Dressing Room, the stage near the power switch, and the theater near Juggernog.

Kino der Toten and “Five” brought the Fire Sale power-up: for 30 seconds, a Box at every spot for 10 points a spin. It only drops after the Box has moved once.

Easter egg

Kino der Toten has no main quest. Its story is told by three film reels, found in the random rooms of the teleporter and played on the projector, and by two radios hidden in the map. Ludvig Maxis speaks on all of them, about test subjects being programmed through edited films.

Film reels

Three per game, spread at random over the four rooms. Pick one up, teleport again and load it into the projector to play a clip.

The rocket

Once the three reels have been played, a small rocket on the table of the Conference Room can be launched.

Radios

One inside the theater chandelier, one at the top of the tower seen from the Alley. Shoot them to play them.

Secrets

Samantha's room, a child's bedroom reached through the teleporter in Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Samantha’s room

One of the random rooms, the bedroom of Samantha Maxis, with the four perk bottles set out for a tea party. It also appears destroyed and soaked in red.

A book with the name Edward Richtofen on its cover, lying on the floor in Kino der Toten, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Richtofen’s book

In the room the left door of the spawn opens, a book on the floor bears the name “Edward Richtofen”.

115

Hold the use button on three meteor rocks, in the Lobby, the back room above the Alley and the Dressing Room, to play the song “115” by Kevin Sherwood and Elena Siegman. It plays once per game.

“The element is here”

Written behind a wall of the Upper Hall.

Achievements

Kino der Toten has no achievement of its own. Three base-game Zombies achievements of Black Ops can be earned on it:

The Collector achievement icon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

The Collector

Buy every weapon off the walls in a single Zombies game. 20G, Silver trophy.

Sacrificial Lamb achievement icon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

Sacrificial Lamb

Kill 6 zombies after getting shot by a Pack-a-Punched Crossbow bolt. 15G, Bronze trophy.

See Me, Stab Me, Heal Me achievement icon, Call of Duty Black Ops Zombies

See Me, Stab Me, Heal Me

Hidden. Fire a Pack-a-Punched Ballistic Knife at a downed ally to revive them from a distance. 15G, Bronze trophy.

None of them can be earned in a First Room game: the Collector needs every wall weapon of the map, and the other two the Pack-a-Punch.

Trivia

  • The game files call the map zombie_theater.
  • Music plays quietly for the whole game: “Damned” by Kevin Sherwood, the theme of the Zombies menu. The game over song is “Abracadavre”, heard in full on the next map, Ascension.
  • Posters for “Faust” and “Pygmalion” around the theater refer to the 1926 film Faust and to Metropolis.
  • The sign in the Alley reads “Deutsches Sol Kino”, “German Sun Cinema”, and the Fernsehturm, the Berlin TV tower, can be seen under construction from there.
  • Writing in the Lobby reads “Beware of the 6”.
  • The Wii version lacks several details, such as the pods and the character portraits, and sells an AUG under the stage turret.
  • A remaster came out in 2017 in Zombies Chronicles for Black Ops III, and a broken piece of the theater appears in Revelations.
