Brutus is the warden of Alcatraz, a giant armoured guard with a club, and the only boss of Mob of the Dead. He hits hard, he soaks bullets, and worse, he locks the things you paid for. Back to the Mob of the Dead main page.

When he shows up

Brutus has no round of his own. Like George A. Romero on Call of the Dead, he walks in alongside the horde He leaves you alone for the first few rounds, then comes back in several ways:

Warden patrol

He appears at random in the middle of a horde.

Box abuse

Spend too much on the Mystery Box and he comes to collect.

Laundry run

Starting the laundry machine for the uniforms plane part brings him in with extra zombies.

Bridge rounds

On the Golden Gate Bridge, an extra Brutus spawns every round, up to four at once.

The padlocks

When Brutus walks past a machine, he can slam a padlock on it. Locked means unusable until someone pays.

What he locksUnlock price
Perk machines2000 points
Workbenches2000 points
Mystery Box2000 points
The plane (Icarus)2000 points

That is the base price. Every extra lock in the same round adds 2000 points: 2000, then 4000, then 6000. A Brutus left alone in a busy area can empty your bank in one round.

Acid and fan

The Acid Trap and the Fan Trap do not hurt him. If he walks into one while it runs, he stops and shuts it down. A short distraction, nothing more.

Tower Trap

The one trap that can kill him, if he stays in range long enough. See the traps page.

How to kill him

Helmet first

His helmet blocks headshots. Shoot it off and his head becomes by far the fastest way to drop him.

Smoke screen

Once the helmet is gone, he stops for a moment and pops smoke grenades. Back off before you are blind in a corridor.

No Insta-Kill

Insta-Kill does not one-shot him, it only boosts the damage you deal.

Heavy guns

Most guns struggle. The Ray Gun, the Death Machine and big-magazine automatics are the ones that work.

The reward

Killed, he drops a power-up.

The weapons that do the job are covered on the weapons page.

Full Lockdown

The Full Lockdown achievement (25 Gamerscore, Bronze trophy) asks for the opposite of what you normally want: Brutus completes his patrol. He has to lock every perk machine, the workbenches, the plane and the current Mystery Box. Since he can only lock what works, power the perks first, clear the zombies around him, then walk him from one machine to the next. Stay close until the padlock lands, then move on.

More achievements on the achievements page.

Brutus in a First Room game

In the First Room, Brutus is the main killer of high-round runs. The cell block has no room to loop him, so you cannot just walk him around like a horde.

Corridor fights

Kill him, don’t train him. Every second he spends next to a machine is a padlock waiting to happen.

Padlock budget

Keep points in reserve. A lock on Juggernog mid-round, at a doubled price, is the kind of bill that ends a game.

Box discipline

Every spin brings him closer. Hit the Box early, then leave it alone.
