Alcatraz has a short cast of enemies: the dead of the prison, guards and inmates alike, and one warden who outranks them all. What makes the map hard is not variety, it is the tight corridors and the boss that locks your machines. Back to the Mob of the Dead main page.

Guards and prisoners

The horde is made of the people who lived and worked on the island. Mob of the Dead introduces two kinds of zombie:

Guard zombies

The Alcatraz guards, still in uniform. The same faction shows up alive in the opening cutscene.

Prisoner zombies

The inmates of the penitentiary, the men the four mobsters shared a cell block with.

In the Cell Block Grief mode, built on a slice of the same map, the two factions become the two teams: guards against prisoners.

Red eyes

Look at their faces: the zombies of Alcatraz have red eyes, and the Mystery Box glows red too. On the earlier maps, eye colour told you who was pulling the strings. Here, red means the dead are not under the control of Samantha, Richtofen or Maxis. Something else runs this island, and Blood of the Dead later puts a name on it.

How they behave

Ghost ignored

A player in Afterlife is not hunted. Zombies only hit a ghost that stands in their path, and every hit drains the Afterlife timer.

Shock push

The ghost’s shock attack teleports a zombie a short distance away. It does not kill it.

Acid and fan

The Acid Trap and the Fan Trap are built for the horde. Brutus shuts them down, normal zombies do not. Details on the traps page.

Brutus, the warden

The boss of the map is Brutus, a huge armoured guard with a club. He has no round of his own: he walks in alongside the horde, and he also answers heavy Mystery Box spending. He padlocks perk machines, workbenches, the plane and the Box, at 2000 points per unlock, and his helmet has to come off before headshots count.

Warden on the loose

Spawns, padlocks, the helmet, the best way to kill him and the Full Lockdown achievement: everything is on the Brutus page.

On the bridge

Bridge Brutus

On the Golden Gate Bridge, an extra Brutus spawns every round, up to four at the same time.

Bridge squeeze

The bridge is a very tight space. Fly over only when you are ready, ideally with the points for the Pack-a-Punch already in your pocket.

How to get there is on the plane page.

In a First Room game

In the First Room, the horde is the usual high-round problem: more of them, faster, tougher every round. The difference on Alcatraz is the space. The cell block leaves no room for a long train, so every round is played in short loops and choke points, and one Brutus at the wrong moment turns a clean round into a scramble.
