More than one quest

Mob of the Dead hides a lot more than its main quest. Two songs, a secret ending you get by doing nothing, a face in the fireworks, coded letters and numbers that point back to the rest of the Zombies story. The main quest has its own page, Pop Goes the Weasel, and so does the Golden Spork. Everything else is below.

The secret ending

Every game starts with the whole crew in Afterlife, in the cell block. If nobody moves and the Afterlife timer runs out, the four mobsters bleed out on the spot. The screen turns black and white, Samantha’s lullaby plays, and the camera lifts from the starting room into the sky. It is a real ending screen, and probably the shortest game you will ever play on the map.

The two songs

Rusty Cage

The Johnny Cash cover of Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage”, the same song that plays in the intro cutscene. Activate three glass bottles. As with most music Easter eggs, a strange sound plays when you are close to one.

3Docks, tucked between a crate and a fence

Where Are We Going

Written by Kevin Sherwood and sung by Malukah. It needs the Warden’s Key, which unlocks the box of the number pad at the bottom of the spiral stairs from the Citadel Tunnels, next to the elevator. The same pad gives you the rigging for the plane. Shock the dials in Afterlife and enter 935, a nod to Group 935, and the song starts.

The number pad

Brutus 115

Enter 115, for Element 115. Brutus answers with a line such as “Not this time!”, and the pad switches to 666 before going back to normal. Nothing else happens.

Audio logs

During the main quest, the pad takes the four prison numbers, 101, 386, 481 and 872. Old Stanley Ferguson, the guard from the intro, then tells how the escape really ended, and headphones carry the rest of the story up to the roof. It only works after three cycles, the free Blundergat and the spoon: see Pop Goes the Weasel.

The jump scare

Bring a sniper rifle to the roof where the plane is built. Go to the far end, left of the runway, and scope in on the fireworks over the bay. For a split second, a distorted face fills the scope with a high-pitched scream. You have been warned.

Ciphers and Weasel’s comic

The letters

Coded sheets are scattered around the prison. Decoded, they are letters that fill in the backstory of the crew. The key comes from a matrix printed on the loading screen.

The giant

Another cipher on the loading screen, in German, reads “urgent, the giant is in France”. A pointer to the next chapter, Origins.

The comic

Pieces of scrap paper form a page of “Icarus from Mars”, the comic strip Weasel was drawing, with his editor’s notes scribbled on it. One of the letters is Weasel himself pitching that comic.

Small details

Clock at 1:15

The clock above the Cafeteria door is stuck at 1:15, for Element 115.

9:35 intro

In the opening cutscene, when Weasel fakes being ill, the time is 9:35, for Group 935.

Rule 666

A rules sign at the entrance of the Citadel Tunnels, near the Warden’s Office, has a Rule 666 about the zombies. Same number as the pad.

Wall skeleton

The hole behind the movie poster, the one you use for the spoon, holds a skeleton in the wall. The oldest prison joke there is: an inmate digging out with a spoon.

Lava pit

Near C-D Block, where one of the hellhound heads appears, there is a lava pit. Throw a grenade in and you get 20 points.

Swim team

On the library bookshelf in the starting room, one book is the Alcatraz Swimteam Yearbook.

Tower of Babel

A Tower of Babel painting hangs above the boarded fireplace near Speed Cola, a nod to the Tower of Babble Easter egg of TranZit.

Most of these do nothing for your run. If you are here for records, the Mob of the Dead leaderboard is the other way, and the achievements page lists what the map pays out.
