The First Room traced from the game files: the broken stairs lead to the LSAT catwalk, right above the exit hole. Click to zoom.

On ZFRR, the Buried First Room is Processing, the rusty metal mining building on the lip of the Rift where every game starts. A walkway runs around a sunken pit with a railing and a large rock in the middle, and the four players spawn on that walkway. One side has no wall at all: it looks out over the Rift, the “big hole in the earth” the characters comment on as soon as the game begins.

The room holds two wall buys, the Olympia on the east wall and the M14 on the south wall, both at 500 points, and three boarded windows, two on the east wall and one on the west wall. There is no door to buy: the way out is a hole in the west walkway, where the floor has given way under the LSAT catwalk, and it drops into the tunnel where Quick Revive stands. Up a broken staircase, a catwalk carries the LSAT for 2000 points; the catwalk collapses a few seconds after you land on it and drops you underground. Down in the pit is the spot where the NAV Table is built for the Easter egg.

The records standing today, solo to four players, are shown next to this article, and the Buried leaderboard lists every run with its video. It is split into three boards, following the rulesets kept on B2:

The walkway of Processing, the starting room, with its railing in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Classic

The players stay on the floor they spawn on in Processing. Dropping into the first hole towards Quick Revive, buying the LSAT and the Ray Gun wall-buy Persistent Upgrade are all banned.

The Quick Revive machine in the cave room under Processing in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Quick side

The players must drop into the Quick Revive area as soon as they gain control, and stay in the room with the Quick Revive machine and the caves next to it. Falling further down to the Barn, the LSAT and the Ray Gun upgrade are banned.

Ray Gun

The same room and the same rules, except that the Ray Gun wall-buy Persistent Upgrade is allowed: the Olympia on the wall then hands out a Ray Gun for 500 points. B2 made it a separate board in its April 2023 vote.

On every board, reconnecting to keep the Juggernog Persistent Upgrade past round 14 is not allowed.

Overview

Buried, also called Resolution 1295 and Processing, is the Zombies map of the Vengeance map pack and the last chapter of the Victis story that began on TranZit. Below the Rift in Angola lies Purgatory Point, an old western mining town swallowed whole: a saloon, a gunsmith, a bank, a candy store, a courthouse, a church, a haunted mansion and a hedge maze. It brought the Paralyzer, the Time Bomb, the Ray Gun Mark II, Vulture Aid, the chalk wall buys and Leroy, the giant who breaks walls for a bottle of booze.

Characters

The four survivors of TranZit and Die Rise, the Victis crew, walk across the desert to the Rift. The intro cutscene has them argue around a campfire, with Russman unable to remember his own name.

Samuel J. Stuhlinger

The one who hears Richtofen, now with a cracked lens and blood on his clothes, voiced by David Boat.

Abigail "Misty" Briarton by the campfire, Buried intro cinematic, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Abigail “Misty” Briarton

Who keeps the group moving because “doing something is better than doing nothing”, voiced by Stephanie Lemelin.

Marlton Johnson talking to Russman, Buried intro cinematic, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Marlton Johnson

The one with the facts, voiced by Scott Menville.

Russman, Buried intro cinematic, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Russman

The former Broken Arrow operative whose memory keeps slipping, voiced by Keith Szarabajka.

Two voices still pull the strings: Dr. Ludvig Maxis, voiced by Fred Tatasciore, and Edward Richtofen, voiced by Nolan North, who is also the announcer.

Enemies

Zombies with glowing blue eyes, one in a top hat, in the town in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Zombies

The eyes glow blue, because Richtofen still controls the dead. With Vulture Aid, some of them leave a green cloud when they die that hides you from the others.

The Ghost floating in front of the mansion in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

The Ghost

The lady of the mansion. Inside her house, copies of her spawn without end and fly at you; each hit steals 2000 points, and only hurts once you have none left.

The zombie holding Richtofen's soul, blue eyes among orange-eyed zombies in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Richtofen zombie

After Maxis’ ending, Richtofen’s soul is locked in one zombie with blue eyes among the orange ones. Killing it drops a power-up.

Leroy

Leroy locked in his cell in the jail in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

A starving giant in overalls sits locked in the jail cell next to the first Mystery Box. The community calls him Leroy; the Kronorium later named him Arthur, and the game files call him Sloth. He is the only friend you will make in Purgatory Point.

The key to Leroy's cell, a skull-headed key, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

The key

Hangs on the wall next to his cell and sets him free.

Booze, the XXX jug that makes Leroy charge, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Booze

He drinks it and charges straight ahead, smashing the debris that blocks a perk, a path or the mansion. The longer the run, the more points you earn, up to about 2400.

Candy, the bowl of sweets Leroy follows, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Candy

He follows you and kills zombies, builds a buildable at a workbench, moves or locks the Mystery Box, changes a power-up, or carries a crawler around like a baby.

Do not shoot him

Wounded, he runs back to his cell and locks himself in, and the key reappears somewhere else.

Everything Leroy can do, booze and candy

Quick Revive

1500 points, 500 in solo, in the tunnel just below Processing.

Double Tap Root Beer perk machine, render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Double Tap Root Beer

Mule Kick perk machine, render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Mule Kick

4000 points, on top of the gunsmith.

Vulture Aid Elixir perk machine, render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Vulture Aid

3000 points, in the church. It made its debut on Buried.

Two more perks only exist as Persistent Upgrades here: a PhD Flopper effect earned from fall damage, and a Tombstone effect that keeps all but your last perk after a revive.

Perks, the power and the Pack-a-Punch

Weapons

Every game starts with an M1911, the knife and frag grenades.

Paralyzer, the wonder weapon of Buried, menu render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Paralyzer

The wonder weapon of the map, from the Mystery Box. It slows zombies to a crawl until they fall apart, never runs out of ammo but overheats, and lets you fly when you fire it at the ground.

The Time Bomb planted, its clock face showing in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Time Bomb

Plant it, and its detonator sends everyone back to the round it was planted, with the weapons, perks and points they had then.

Ray Gun Mark II, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Ray Gun Mark II

Introduced on Buried, where it is as common in the Box as any other weapon and every player can own one.

The chalk weapon drawings on the wall of the Gunsmith in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Chalk

Some wall buys come as chalk drawings in the gunsmith. You draw them on any question mark painted on a wall, and earn points for it.

LSAT light machine gun, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

LSAT

2000 points on the collapsing catwalk above Processing.

Every wall buy, the chalk, the Box and the wonder weapons

Buildables

Turbine

Back from TranZit, it powers the Subsurface Resonator.

Trample Steam built, grate and steam motor on a wooden base with its flag, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Trample Steam

Back from Die Rise, it flings whatever steps on it.

Head Chopper, the saw on a stand, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Head Chopper

A saw on a stand that cuts zombies in half. It only exists on Buried.

Subsurface Resonator, a speaker on a roulette wheel, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Subsurface Resonator

A sonic blast that kills nearby zombies, powered by a Turbine.

The NAV Table with its radio, electrical box and meteorite in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Built in Processing, for the story’s ending.

Almost every part lies in the General Store, and Leroy can build one for you if he gets candy next to a workbench.

Every buildable and where its parts are

Pack-a-Punch

The Pack-a-Punch machine in the gazebo at the end of the maze in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

The power switch is upstairs in the Candy Store. The Pack-a-Punch waits in a gazebo at the end of the maze, next to Stamin-Up, at the top of a spiral staircase. To get there, the power must be on and you must cross the mansion and the maze; Leroy breaks the debris in front of the mansion, or you jump the gate with the Paralyzer or a Trample Steam.

Easter egg: Mined Games

Both voices want the tower above ground powered, each for himself. Richtofen’s side builds a guillotine, Maxis’ side builds the gallows. It must be played on Original difficulty, and the full quest needs four players. Finishing it earns Mined Games and gives every player all the perks for the rest of the game.

Maxis’ ending

Maxis takes the Aether, turns the zombies’ eyes orange and locks Richtofen’s soul inside a zombie. This is the canon ending.

Richtofen’s ending

Richtofen erases Maxis and moves into Samuel’s body. The players keep a permanent Fire Sale and a four-weapon Mule Kick.

Both endings only trigger when all four players have finished Tower of Babble, High Maintenance and Mined Games for the same side, and every NAV Table holds the right Navcard.

Mined Games step by step, both sides

Persistent upgrades and the Bank

The bank teller window, Hold to withdraw in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

The Bank

In the western bank, it shares its balance with TranZit and Die Rise.

The fridge, the Weapon Locker, model render, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

The fridge

The Weapon Locker stands in the General Store. A weapon that does not exist on the map comes out as its closest match.

Persistent Upgrades

The hidden bonuses of TranZit and Die Rise work here too, online only, and Buried adds two of its own: Flopper and Half-Off.

Every Persistent Upgrade, the Bank and the fridge

Secrets

The Ghost playing the piano in the mansion in Buried, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

The ghost at the piano

A Ballistic Knife bullseye on the saloon dartboard starts the piano. Tip the Ghost playing it in the mansion 10 points and she gives you a perk.

Always Running

Three teddy bears, the first on the hay next to Quick Revive, play the song by Kevin Sherwood sung by Malukah.

The perk bottle

Cross the mansion when its windows are lit and kill every Ghost: the last one drops a free perk, once every few rounds.

Achievements

Mined Games achievement icon, Call of Duty Black Ops II Zombies

Ten achievements come with Buried. The biggest is Mined Games (75G, Silver); the others are Bronze, from 10G to 35G. One of them, When the Revolution Comes, asks you to get back to Processing.

Trivia

  • The name Resolution 1295 refers to the UN Security Council resolution that put sanctions on UNITA in Angola.
  • The Ghost is Ms. Brown, mother of Jebediah Brown, the blacksmith of Purgatory Point who built the very first Pack-a-Punch. Her story is told in the records of Tag der Toten.
  • The mansion is hung with portraits of the scientist Michael Faraday.
  • Outside the maze, the hedges switch between seven layouts every ten seconds.
  • Leroy’s knuckles are tattooed “SUGR SHOT”.
  • Once out of Processing, the only way back is the portal opened by breaking two fountains: the one in front of the church and the mansion, and the one in the middle of the maze.
  • A fragment of Buried floats in Revelations, and the town returned as Ghost Town in Black Ops 4’s Blackout.
