The First Room

The spawn area, a jungle clearing with a large tree, stone ruins and wooden fences, the First Room of Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

On ZFRR, the Zetsubou No Shima First Room is the spawn area, a jungle clearing of the island, closed in by trees, rocks, old stone ruins and wooden fences. The players start with 500 points, an MR6 pistol, the knife and frag grenades.

Two paths lead out of the clearing, each sold for 500 points: one towards Lab A, the other towards Lab B. In a First Room game both stay closed. Every perk machine, every Mystery Box spot and every pool of Element 115 water is on the other side, so the whole game is played with the walls of the clearing and what the zombies drop.

Sheiva semi-automatic rifle, Gunsmith render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Sheiva

500 points, a semi-automatic rifle, on a wall of the clearing, to the right of the tree in front of the spawn.

RK5 three-round burst pistol, Gunsmith render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

RK5

500 points, a three-round burst pistol, just beyond the Sheiva, next to the GobbleGum machine.

Those are the only two wall buys of the spawn area. The zombies climb through four barriers and also rise from the ground.

The bucket, inventory icon, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The bucket

One of the buckets of the map lies in the clearing. It can be picked up, but the three pools of coloured water are all behind the doors.

No perk machine

There is no machine in the clearing. In solo, Quick Revive falls from a plane at the start of round 2, but on the far side of one of the two paths, by the gate to Lab A or opposite the Trials of the Ancients. A First Room game is played without any perk.

The planter

A round stone planter where a Seed dropped by a zombie can be planted. Without water, a Seed still grows in three rounds, into a plant with a low-tier reward.

The cleansing pedestal

One of the four stone pedestals of the Skull of Nan Sapwe quest stands by the large central rock. The bloody skulls rest on the ritual altar, beyond the doors, so it stays unused.

The GobbleGum machine

Next to the RK5. The ZFRR board for this map is a no-gum board, so it stays unused.

The spore

A toxic spore grows over time on the rocks by the path to Lab A. Its orange cloud makes the player cough, which stops sprinting and shooting, and a zombie that walks through a full-grown spore can turn into a Thrasher.

Doors closed, the clearing still sees the enemies of the island. Thrashers come from the spores and, as the rounds go up, on their own. Spider rounds replace the Hellhound rounds and end with a Max Ammo, and from round 21 spiders also come during normal rounds. Spiders cover machines and paths with webs, which are cut by holding the use button on them or with an explosive.

The Zetsubou No Shima leaderboard keeps separate boards for solo and for two, three and four players. Its rules:

Doors closed

Reach the highest round you can without opening any door.

No GobbleGums

Neither Classic nor Mega GobbleGums are allowed.

Full rounds

Every round must be played in full, and glitches and exploits are not allowed.

Video

The whole game must be recorded. Each player shows their gum loadout before, during or after the game; in co-op, a player who does not show the lobby before or after the game must provide their own point of view.

Where to post it

A Twitch video must be saved as a highlight, since past broadcasts are not accepted; a YouTube video must be public or unlisted.

Overview

Zetsubou No Shima, Japanese for “Island of Despair”, is the Zombies map of Eclipse, the second map pack of Call of Duty: Black Ops III. The mission briefing sums it up: “On a remote island in the Pacific, a mysterious facility hides the secrets behind Division 9’s sinister experiments…” The map brought the Thrasher, the spiders, swimming, the KT-4, the Skull of Nan Sapwe, the Gas Mask, and Seeds to grow with buckets of Element 115 water.

The story follows Der Eisendrache. Division 9, the Japanese research group behind the Shi No Numa facility, ran its second phase on this island, testing Element 115 on plants, animals and people. The Primis crew wash ashore after a fight on a Japanese ship, and come to find the original Takeo Masaki, held captive in the bunker, to keep his soul in the Summoning Key. Eclipse also holds four multiplayer maps: Spire, Knockout, Rift and Verge.

Characters

The four playable characters are the Primis crew, the younger versions of the heroes of Origins.

The American Marine. In the intro he warns the officer holding the Summoning Key that it will bring him nothing but pain.

Nikolai Belinski of the Primis crew in his aviator cap, official character render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Nikolai Belinski

The Russian soldier, who pushes the crew off the burning ship just before it explodes.

Takeo Masaki of the Primis crew, official character render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Takeo Masaki

The Japanese officer, accused of treason on the ship, who comes face to face with his older self at the end of the quest.

Edward Richtofen of the Primis crew, official character render, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Edward Richtofen

The doctor of Group 935, who keeps the souls in the Summoning Key.

The original Takeo Masaki, wounded, in the ending cinematic, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The original Takeo

The Takeo of the Ultimis crew, imprisoned under the bunker on the orders of the Emperor and turned into a giant Thrasher. He is the final boss of the Easter egg.

L

Ludvig Maxis

Heard on five hidden radios, speaking to Richtofen of a changing world and of truths he has kept from him.

Enemies

A zombie with glowing eyes in the jungle, trailer screenshot, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Zombies

Japanese zombies, back for the first time since Shi No Numa.

A Thrasher covered in glowing spores, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Thrashers

Zombies mutated by the spores, dragged underground by roots before they rise again. They only die when the spores on their body are shot, they release clouds that make the player cough, and they turn red and run when hurt. In co-op, a Thrasher swallows downed players, who are freed by killing it.

A spider with an orange body, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Spiders

They replace the Hellhounds on special rounds, and join the normal rounds from round 21. They spit webs at the player and cover machines and paths with them.

The Giant Spider in its cave, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

The Giant Spider

A hidden boss in a cave behind the blue water, near Lab A. Beating it opens a free pool of Widow’s Wine.

Keepers

They attack only during the defence of the Skull of Nan Sapwe.

Thrashers, spiders, the Giant Spider and the Keepers

Perks

No machine stands in the spawn area. Two of them are dropped by a cargo plane, on round 2 or round 6, on two spots just past the first two paths. Three others swap places at random from game to game.

The Quick Revive machine among the plants, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Quick Revive

500 in solo, where it is dropped by the plane at the start of round 2; 1500 in co-op, where it stands in the Bunker.

Juggernog

2500. In the Bunker in solo; dropped by the plane in co-op.

Double Tap Root Beer

Speed Cola and Stamin-Up: 2000, 3000 and 2000. They share their spots at random: by the blue water near Lab A, by the green water behind Lab B, and the plane drops.

Mule Kick

4000. In the room before the underwater tunnels of the Bunker.

Widow’s Wine

Free, from a pool in the cave of the Giant Spider, once the boss is dead.

Electric Cherry and Deadshot Daiquiri have no machine: they come only from a random perk bottle or from the fruit of a plant. The top Trial of the Ancients gives an extra perk slot.

Weapons

Every game starts with an MR6, the knife and frag grenades. The walls sell the RK5 and the Sheiva in the spawn area, eleven more weapons around the island, the Trip Mine and the Bowie Knife.

Spawn area

The Sheiva and the RK5, 500 each. In the First Room.

Towards Lab A

The KRM-262 for 750 behind the first path, the Pharo for 700 by the crashed plane, the Kuda for 1250 under Lab A and the HVK-30 for 1600 in Lab A.

Towards Lab B

The L-CAR 9 for 750 in the ruins, the Argus for 1100 at the ritual altar, the Vesper for 1250 and the Trip Mine for 1000 outside Lab B, the M8A7 for 1500 inside it and the ICR-1 for 1500 by the green water.

Bunker

The VMP for 1300 by the Bunker door, the Bowie Knife for 3000 outside it, and the KN-44 for 1400 by the FlaK 88 cannon.

The KT-4 and its glowing green tank, side view, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

KT-4

The wonder weapon of the map, built in the Bunker from a vial, a plant and spider venom. It spits a green liquid that grows spores on zombies, kills Thrashers, clears webs and fertilises plants. It is upgraded into the Masamune on a second bench, not with the Pack-a-Punch.

The Skull of Nan Sapwe on its stone pedestal, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Skull of Nan Sapwe

The Specialist weapon. Vaporize lifts zombies and destroys them; Mesmerize calms them and reveals hidden things around the map.

A player controlling a spider with the Spider Bait, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Spider Bait

A hidden wonder weapon in the equipment slot. Once a round, the player hides in a cocoon and takes control of a spider for about 50 seconds.

The overgrown Zombie Shield, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Zombie Shield

Built from three parts, overgrown after years on the island. It can be electrified by the lightning of the ritual altar.

Gas Mask

Built from three parts. It protects from the spore clouds and gives more time underwater.

Every weapon, its price and its place

The KT-4 and the Masamune

The Zombie Shield and the Gas Mask

Plants and water

Zombies drop Seeds, up to three in hand at a time, to plant in stone planters around the map. A Seed grows in three rounds. Watered once a round with a bucket, it grows into a different plant depending on the water used.

Blue water

Behind Lab A. Three times blue gives a pod of power-ups and weapons, like the Harvest Pods of Shadows of Evil.

Green water

Behind Lab B, by a meteor of Element 115. Three times green gives a plant that impales a zombie and kills it slowly.

Purple water

In the Living Quarters of the Bunker. Three times purple gives a plant that draws zombies and tears their heads off.

All three

One of each gives the best chance of a fruit that grants a free perk. Fertilised each round with the KT-4, it gives the best chance of a Clone Plant, which brings back a downed player with their whole loadout.

Every plant, every water and the Golden Bucket

Power and Pack-a-Punch

The power works in two stages. A bucket of any Element 115 water poured into the funnels of Lab A and Lab B gives both labs power for a short time, long enough to open the Bunker door for free. Inside, one vent of the power room is blocked by a web: clearing it seals the flooded stairway, and the player has to survive underwater until it opens again. The main switch then turns the power on for good.

The Pack-a-Punch machine lies under water in the middle of the Bunker. Three parts repair the three pumps around it: one is found after the underwater lockdown, one falls from the cocoons hanging in the Living Quarters, and a red valve wheel waits in the underwater tunnels past Mule Kick. Once the water is drained, the machine is in reach.

Skull of Nan Sapwe and Trials

The ritual area, between the spawn and Lab B, holds an altar with four bloody skulls and the four pillars of the Trials of the Ancients. Each skull is cleansed on a pedestal somewhere on the map while green-glowing zombies try to destroy it. With the four skulls back on the altar, a staircase opens under it, down to the Skull of Nan Sapwe, defended against Keepers.

Each player has three Trials on the pillars, picked at random among sixteen. The bottom one gives a Max Ammo, the middle one a Dingo, an SVG-100 or a 205 Brecci, and the top one an extra perk slot. When every player has finished, lightning starts to strike the altar and can electrify a Zombie Shield.

Traps and utilities

The Propeller Trap of the crashed plane, Zetsubou No Shima, Call of Duty Black Ops III Zombies

Propeller Trap

1000 points. Two propellers of the crashed plane, between the spawn and Lab A, spin and cut down the zombies.

Fan Trap

1000 points. At the first door on the right inside the Bunker, on the stairs to the anti-aircraft platform. It blows zombies into a fan.

Zipline

250 points, one player at a time, between Lab A and the Docks.

Sewer Pipe

500 points, between the operations room of the Bunker and the green water behind Lab B.

Mystery Box

950 points a spin, on five possible spots. It starts either at the ritual altar or by the crashed plane.

Ritual area

By the pillars where the four skulls rest. Possible starting spot.

Crashed plane

In the area of the Propeller Trap. Possible starting spot.

Green water

Behind the giant Element 115 rock, behind Lab B.

Docks

In front of the door.

Anti-aircraft platform

Next to the debris sold for 500 points.

The Box holds the Marshal 16 pistols, dual-wielded, the Ray Gun, the Monkey Bomb, and the KT-4 once it has been built.

GobbleGum

One GobbleGum machine stands in the spawn area, next to the RK5, and others wait in Lab A, Lab B and the Bunker. Spiders can cover them with webs. The ZFRR board for this map is a no-gum board: the machine of the clearing is left alone, and each player shows their gum loadout on video to prove it.

Easter egg: Seeds of Doubt

The main quest asks the crew to “save the one”: to reach the original Takeo and keep his soul. It can be done in solo. It needs the Skull of Nan Sapwe, the Masamune, the Gas Mask, the Zombie Shield, a bucket, Seeds, every Trial of every player, and the Anywhere But Here! GobbleGum.

The elevator

The Skull reveals a blueprint in the Living Quarters, then a hidden door next to the broken elevator of the Bunker. Its machinery misses three cogs.

The three cogs

One in a secret room above Lab A, one from a cargo plane shot down with the FlaK 88 cannon, one on a dock reached by dropping off the zipline with an electrified shield.

The boss fight

Under the Bunker, the Masamune shoots four spores on the giant Thrasher that the original Takeo has become, between waves of zombies, spiders and Thrashers. Winning gives every player all the perks of the map.

Seeds of Doubt, step by step

Secrets

Dead Flowers

Hold the use button on three sock monkeys to play the song by Kevin Sherwood, sung by Malukah.

Samantha’s Lullaby

Fill the bulbs on the wall by the purple water with the right amounts of water to play a new version of the lullaby.

Golden Bucket

A bucket that never runs dry, grown in a hidden planter under Lab B.

Friendly Thrasher

A hidden spore in the Bunker turns a zombie into a Thrasher that fights for the players.

The doppelgänger

Aiming a sniper scope at the test subject tubes of the Bunker can bring out a double of one of the four characters, who screams at the player.
